Why does Hubpages want my email and PASSWORD?

I am in the middle of creating a Hubpages account. I got to a page that asks me for my email address and password. I can only use MSM, Yahoo, Gmail etc. But they want my password so they can pull my contacts list. What the hell kind of crap is this? I tried to just hit the continue button, but they wouldn't accept that. I have to give up my contact list in my Yahoo account. Fortunately I only have one person in my contacts at Yahoo, as that is only for accessing some stuff on Yahoo, like their groups. But I think this is a real invasion of privacy.

Any advice or feedback? Is there a way to bypass it? They say they don't keep the information, but that doesn't satisfy, sorry.

    Maybe they have a "uncle in Nigeria that has just passed away" and they want to store some emails for safe keeping in your Yahoo account :-)

    I recently signed up for a Hubpages account and there's a button that said "skip this part" when it asked if I wanted to integrate with my email accounts. Should be there for you as well - not sure why it's not.

      I swear, I am blind as a bat. I don't know what I thought that button was, but I misread it. It is there.

      I am not really worried about giving them the password, as there is really nothing in that account. I almost never use it to send email. I just thought it was a bit of strange. Identity theft is rampant, and this could be used in that capacity in some cases. Never can be too careful.

          I am getting old man, lots of brain cells have expired.

          I am not real social, and I don't spend my time on those type of sites. Could be a flaw in my personality, but that is just the way I am.

    Yes, I never allow sites to do this, but you can skip it. Looks like you figured it out now. Sites like this do it all the time, as they want an easy way to get more people using their site. It's always annoying to see those emails from friends who actually do this and you get basically a SPAM email inviting you to yet another social networking site. Supposedly it's secure and they get in to your account get the contact list but don't truly know your email password but you never know...

      Oh that drives me nuts! I don't care if Hubpages is supposedly secure. Even though I'm on Hubpages I don't think they need my contact's info.

      I got spammed by a site that got a hold of my friend's address book, even though they were "secure" and weren't going to do anything with the information supposedly.

      Being careful is good. Too many people haven't been lately.
