What $1000 For a Screw? and a Marketing Lesson For All

A man running a restaurant in a small town is in trouble. You see he gets all the locals in town and tourism is down because of the weather and he needs to stay open to make money and survive.

The problem is his heater is broke and its below zero. If he has no heat in his business, no one will stay and eat or drink. This means no money for him. So he calls every place in his area and they all tell him it will be atleast a week or more before they can come out.

He can't wait weeks, that means no money for weeks for him as well. So he is out of options and has no idea what to do. A man in the corner of the restaurant that he didn't even noticed was there suddenly coughs.

The owner turns to the person and apologizes for not seeing him and asks "can I help You?"

The man says "Yes, but I can help you as well!" "Hows That?" the owner said.

"I over heard your problem and can guarantee to fix your heater now and It will be fixed in minutes"

The man walks to the heater and taps it with a screwdriver and says "$1000 and it will be fixed in minutes guaranteed and you can start filling your place up with customers again"

The owner says "you can guarantee to have the heater running in minutes and it's $1000?"

He thinks thats a lot of money, the other places wanted 1/2 that. Then he thinks that he would have to wait weeks for the other places to come out and fix it.

The owner says "We Have a Deal!"

The man removes the side panel, and looks at the 4 screws. Taps and turns one screw and puts back the panel.

The man says "ok start it up again" and the owner is amazed that the heater instantly kicks in and his place is once again ready for business and nice and warm.

The man grabs a pen from his pocket and writes on a crumbled piece of paper. The man hands the man and says here is your bill.

The bill says Turning screw is $1 and Knowing which screw to turn $999. Hopefully you picked up some good marketing tips or lessons from that story. One of the lessons is that

You can be the person to receive more than your competitors just by knowing what a customer really needs and providing the answer. You know which screw to turn or basically can help them get their solution.
