What is a good amount of traffic?

For something like a niche blog. 200 views per day? 500? 1000? I'm not talking about click thru rate here, just views. Thanks!

Some people will contest that the more traffic you get, the better off you will be.

But that is not necessarily the case.

If I were offered 100,000 random visitors a day vs. 100 targeted consumers a day, I would take the 100 all day long.

In my opinion, it is better to target your traffic carefully and strategically rather than just getting as much traffic as possible.

Every day I check the obituaries. If I don't see my name there, then I know it's going to be a good day!

Good traffic means something different for everyone. It could be 200 for some and 50,000 for others.

I think the key for you will be to establish a ratio of sales success based on the traffic that you get, determine how much money you want to make, and then figure out how much traffic you need to have to reach your goals.

It would totally depend on the niche. If you are ranking and getting traffic for a term like 'real estate' you could be getting literally millions of hits per day and still want more whereas if you are local real estate agent in Mobile Alabama and are ranking for 'Mobile Alabama Real Estate' you may only get a hundred visits a day, but who is more likely to contact you about purchasing/selling real estate in Mobile Alabama, someone searching a generic term or a specific one that is geo-targeted?

Don't get me wrong ranking for a term like 'real estate' is a cash cow, but for a local realtor in a specific region they will convert to their market far more often with their geo-targeted niche specific keyword/phrase.

Well in depends on how much money you want to make.

I mean in general the more traffic you get (targeted traffic like Allen said) the more money you are likely to earn.

When I wanted to get a sense of how my site compared to the rest of the internet, I turned to benchmarking in Google Analytics. When I saw I was below the benchmark for my category, it really motivated me to work hard until I surpassed it.

If you're not familiar with it, you can find it under the Visitors section in analytics.

Google divides all sites into small, medium or large -- based on traffic, not number of pages. They won't tell you which size your site is, but they compare you to your traffic peers. They also break sites down into broad categories, so you can compare yourself to other sites in similar niches.

So, for example, I have various sites. Some have little or no traffic, so I assume they're "small". Comparing to the benchmark, I can see that small sites in the self-help/motivational category got only 41 visits and 78 pageviews in the whole month of March.

My bigger site is being compared to a different set of peers. Among these peers, sites in the self-help/motivational category got 3848 visits and 12934 pageviews in March. That's about 124 visits a day, and I figure these must be "medium" sites, because I would guess there are sites in this category that get substantially more traffic.

Another thing... There are lots of categories, but Google won't benchmark a category unless there are at least 100 sites in the size-group participating.
