How does Geolocation of Amazon Associates work?

I couldn't find any topics on this and I've been searching high and low on Google for an answer but couldn't find it. I need some help to clear this up. And I tried looking around Amazon but couldn't find the answer.

Okay, so I live in Canada, and I figured I was going to try out being an affiliate for Amazon.

So I clicked "join associates" on the amazon.com website, but just before I filled out the application, I wondered if there was a difference with the .com and the amazon.ca website. So I went to the .ca website and clicked the "amazon associates" button, and I find the URL of the two websites are completely different.

US: affiliate-program.amazon.com
Canada: associates.amazon.ca/

So I figured, is there a difference between being an Amazon Associate for the US and Canada?

So my questions is:

Can amazon associates only sell to customers in the same country as you?

Or does it not matter what country I'm from as an Amazon Associate?

      Hey there my fellow Canadian!

You can sell to any country you want, the issue is to the buyer. I have several Amazon sites, mostly directed to US traffic with my US aff link.

However, if a Canadian or someone from any other country lands on my site, and is directed to my product via my US aff link, they cannot buy there, and should they head off to their local amazon and make the purchase there, you will not get paid.

If you use WP, there is a way around this, but you still need to apply for an aff link from every country. Assuming you use WP, grab this plugin: Amazon Affiliate Link Localizer.

All you do is add your aff links to the plugin, and it will direct your traffic to the right store. If the local site doesn't carry the product, they are still directed to the US site, and you are still out of luck.

        Hi ElleJ,

        Thanks for the Wordpress tip!

        But what you mentioned before...

You mentioned that if someone foreign to US landed to your US aff link, then they couldn't buy from you cuz they'd buy form their local amazon website. So that does mean if I were to sign up as a Canadian Amazon Associate, any US traffic/buyers that I get to my Canadian aff link wouldn't count towards a commission to me?

And does that mean even though I live in Canada, I can still sign up for a US Amazon Associates account? Since you mentioned you that you have a US aff link yourself.

      Hey JB

The only way to get paid is via your affiliate link. So... Let's say, you have a site, and on your site you are using a US affiliate link. If a visitor from the States lands on your site and follows your US link and buys, you get paid.

If a Canadian visitor follows your US link to amazon.com, a few things could happen. Most likely, they will see that amazon.com won't ship here. So they may leave amazon.com and head to amazon.ca to see if we the product here. And since amazon.ca sucks, they'll likely not find what they are looking for. On the very small chance that amazon.ca DOES have it, and they make a purchase, you wouldn't be paid, because they navigated to the Canadian site on their own, without your affiliate link. BUT, if this Canadian visitor has US friends, relatives, or a US address they can ship to, and decides they will have amazon.com ship there instead of here, you do get paid, because they are still on amazon.com via your aff link.

If you are using the WP plugin, it will automatically send your visitors to their local amazon with your aff link, and you'll get paid.

You can sign up for any country you like, and the above scenario will hold true in each case.

That was exactly what I needed to clear everything up! Finally I can join with no second thoughts. Thanks you were very helpful.

I'm thinking of joining through as US affiliate, just cuz there's tons more traffic from that country than anywhere else, and also cuz I'm not totally sure if I'm going to use Wordpress as my presell medium of choice, so I'm not even sure if I'm gonna us the WP plugin. But it is something I'm definitely going to keep in mind.

An excellent explanation. The only reason why a Canadian might sign up for a US account is simply because of the local geo numbers. ( bigger audience )This fellow Canadian has both US and Canadian accounts. But you do need to know that they are not inter-changable, so if you are promoting to your Canadian friends be sure to GIVE THEM the correct link. It is unfortunate that Amazon.ca doesnt have the product line that Amazon.Us has. Thats the marketing game, go where the traffic is.

If you are Canadian, I'd pick .ca and sell snowblowers or shovels! Then again, the States aren't all that well off this Winter either.

    Just sayin'

As a Canadian software architect and blogger, I've developed a tool to dynamically display canadian ads to canadians and US ads to us visitors (geo targetting amazon and ebay ads)..

It is called "Localized Ads Service", you can find also find it on my blog called "Mike Gleason jr's Blog"

It is free so I really don't feel it's a shameless plug

Before getting this plugin go to Amazon and register for the countries that you wish to sell in and you will be given an Amazon.com affiliate ID for each of those countries

You can have Amazon accounts from around the world. Germany, France, Australia, Japan, China, Canada, U.K.. . . there may be more

Then get this plugin and when its installed you will see where to post your new I.D.'s

Visitors to your site will be taken to the Amazon Site at their own location. i.e .au, .ca, .uk

Some of the sites aren't that great but its better than finding just the right product on amazon.com only to learn that its not available at your location. Also, if a Canadian or British or German visitor buys on YOUR Amazon.com site you don't get paid. So cover your bases, get I.D's for everywhere and use the plugin. Although a lot of new themes are incorporating this into their designs. Just lookout for them.

    hxxp://wordpress.Xrg/extend/plugins/amazon-affiliate-link-localizer/

This plugin automatically changes your Amazon links to point to your visitor's local Amazon store whilst using your affiliate ID for that country:

This plugin not only automatically changes any Amazon link on your site to use your affiliate ID, but it also changes the link to point to the user's local Amazon store.

So if your visitor is visiting from the UK they'll get a link to Amazon.co.uk, if they're visiting from the US they'll get a link to the same product on Amazon.com.

All you have to do is provide all your affiliate IDs.
