Here is how I go about mine:

First, I start with "broad" to get extensive
    keywords with synonyms turned on.

Second, I select, copy and paste the keywords
that are relevant to me into a notepad.

Thereafter, I copy the selected keywords in
my notepad back to Google Keyword Tool.
This time I will uncheck the synonyms.

Third, I will select the "phrase" match and then
    click the "get keywords" button.

With enough keywords from this exercise I can
now go to Google home page to check for competition.

I use Firefox browser. At a glance I can see the strength
of my prospective competitors. Most time I use the
Allintitle: "search term" modifier to size the market.

If you decide to handpick a keyword, it means you must
put in extra efforts to build backlinks. This is to consolidate
your ranking position. Otherwise, you will loose your position
    sooner than you get there.

    Hope that helps.

I like to check with the "exact" setting just to double check and then confirm the amount of competition by searching Google with my long tail keyword with quotes, and also without.
