2 Forum Software Questions...

Hey Warriors,

Thanks for even reading this post but I'm really curious.

1. What forum software does WF use?

2. Is the "Bump your WSO" feature a customized software or do "pay for use" forums exist out of the box in these softwares?

Thanks for any thoughts or insight!

Cheers,

Brad

    Brad,

Allen used the VBulletin platform I'm not sure of the version but it is 3.8.? NOT the 4.0.

As for the Bump WSO feature goes, I believe it is a custom job.

There is a Mod for "Pay tp Post" for VB over at vBulletin.org Forum - The Official vBulletin Resource! that does the job, but it has no bumping feature to it.

    Hey Thanks for posting...

How hard is it to use/manage a forum using Vbulletin? I notice people use WP Plugins to do it on a WP site...is that a better option if lots of depth isn't needed in the beginning?

    Cheers,

    Brad

Vbulletin is really easy once you get the hang of it. Trust me.

But I will say it is rather pricey for the latest version.

      Brad,

VB isn't that hard to handle. Matter of fact you get a ton of features in the admincp, and every one of them have explanation or help boxes that explain every step.

My suggestion would be that if you do not have a lot of depth and want to save a couple of hundred, then go with the WP. You'll have to buy the plugin though to do what you want.

On another note, VB has changed drastically in the past few months. I am still using VB 3.8 and love it. I tried the VB 4.0 and it sucks to be honest about it - plus having to pay for every full version from now on sucks even more.

If you plan to use the VB, hunt down someone who is wanting to sell a fully licensed earlier version.

      Hope this helps ...

I am using vbulletin 3.8 and it is first forum I have ever managed. At fist the back end looked very complicated to operate but once I got hang of it then it is really easy to use. I did lot of research before I decided to get vbulletin and I have no regrets. The new version looks nice but I have not personally used it, there is lot of bad reviews for some reason. As mmurtha said, tray to get 3.8.

    Brad,

If you can get it installed, then it's not that bad to set it up. You need to look through everything, but vBulletin is a very nice (nicest I have looked at) forum script.

    Thanks,

    John

Vbulletin is the best option for running a forum. You should need no more knowledge of databases to use it than wordpress or any other platform.

Vbulletin is fantastic and an amazing forum solution (3.8) and I've been using it for over 5 years on multiple sites. The newest version I do not like (4.0). They recoded it all from the ground up and it looks horrible and for me, being someone used to the regular forum look, am finding forums that upgraded to 4.0 confusing to use and not user friendly at all.

Stick with 3.8. Best version so far (its the version this site runs). Also, similar to how WP has plugins, VBulletin has 'addons'. You can download thousands upon thousands of free addons at vbulletin .org (instead of .com)

    Goodluck!
