Do you freely display your PayPal email?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. Perhaps I'm just overly cautious or it might be that I just don't quite comprehend the PayPal system as well as I should.

Here's the thing.

I'm nervous about displaying my PayPal email address for all to see. Is this something I need to worry about, or am I being paranoid?

Yes, I could put a PayPal button on my page, but it won't work in all cases. You see, I am offering advertising in my new ezine, which means people can buy a month at a time, or 3-4 weeks at a time, or even a few months at a time. I don't really want to have a whole list of PayPal buttons for each possible option and thought it would be easier just to give them my PayPal email address.

The other option is to have them contact me with their ad details and then I can give them my PayPal email to pay for it. The problem with that is I'd have to be more involved that I'd prefer to be. I'd rather they just click a button, pay, and send me the ad.

Oh. And I just remembered. Does PayPal offer a way to add a button without a price, so people can enter what they wish? That would be perfect. I'll check that out, too.

What would you do in this situation?

Thanks.

Sylvia

I wouldn't want to display my email address either - it would be harvested by spammers very quickly, unless it was displayed as a graphic.

One alternative is to post it as:

You don't really have anything to worry about, however it just depends on what your concern is about displaying your email.

For example, if you're worried about your email getting harvested and used to spam you, then yes you may want to do your best to hide your email addy. If this is the case, you can always add more email accounts to your account and create an account solely for collecting payments.

If it's about security, then that's more about you being safe with your account info.

The bottom line though is that your paypal email will ultimately be known by people. When you make a purchase or someone buys from you, they WILL know your PP email address.

Hopefully that addresses some of your questions!

      Thanks everyone.

Actually, I recently had to change my PP email address because some idiots have been spamming me. As some of you pointed out, this is a definite problem. I hadn't even considered that when I asked the question, strangely enough. I was more concerned about the security of it - to me, it's kind of like putting your bank account number out there.

While waiting for responses, I found out something good at PayPal.

You can create a buy button with a drop down menu with different prices. You can even track the sales per item on the list to see which sells the most.

As with anything, I tend to get too engulfed in the process and end up confusing myself. For instance, if too many people buy ads to fit the next issue of the ezine, I'll have to refund them - unless they are ok to wait for the next issue. So then, I get all in a knot about developing some convoluted system to get them to the actual buy button - after they let me know what they want through my contact form, and then I refer them to yet another place to pay.

Talk about working hard to drive customers away!

I think I can set the Buy Button with one price and then allow them to change their order, but I'm not sure if that'll work. If someone buys more than one insertion, they get a discount. It's not just 2x or 3x the base price. More things to examine in PP.

    A couple solutions might be:

You could post a button for a weekly ad buy and just make it a recurring payment, and they can cancel when they want.

    Or

Post a button that is priced for a weekly buy, and let them change the quantity accordingly (you can do that in the paypal settings). So, the price might be $50/week or whatever. Make a $50 button and if they want 4 weeks, they just change the quantity to 4 and pay.

    I dunno, quick fix ideas.

That's how I invoice my leads clients. They have a fixed cost for the leads, and they adjust the quantity for the amount of leads that they receive or want to purchase.

      Thanks mr2monster...

You were posting while I was so I missed your last note. So PP won't let them change the actual price, just the quantity? If that's so, it won't work for me because it's a falling price scale.

Good idea about recurring payments, though. I'll keep that in mind in future.

You can hide your email address but using an image on the order page. Looks like you will need a button or drop down of some sort.

    like this

    https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/websc...=5W93NANFDFT2G

this way the email addy is disguised. Only those that purchase will ever see your email and most likely they wont spam you.

      Great news guys!

Did you know you can create a PayPal button without putting in a price?

You leave those fields empty and then click the Advanced options. Choose the option to let people change the quantity.

When you click the buy button, it leaves the top portion with a 0 balance, so you can enter quantity and amount. They then click Update, and it automatically calculates the total.

Then, they just go ahead and proceed with the order.

      Neat.

      This helps a ton!

Except for my natural talent for making things more difficult than they really are...

this still leaves an issue, if they enter the wrong amount. At least with the drop-down option, they can only choose what you set.

Maybe provide both buttons, then they can decide for themselves which makes the most sense.

      Sylvia

PS: Maybe this'll help some of you as well, if you weren't aware of this option.
