For an information site where its expected that most viewers will be at a moderate level of knowledge or lower, is a domain name ending in 101 insulting? As in carpetriding101.tld?

I suppose it does if you are hyper sensitive but it would not for me.

I don't think it's insulting, but if you're targeting people who have more knowledge of the subject than "101" level, why not come up with a new domain name?

If you're trying to fit your keywords into the url and found that they are already taken, try using dashes in between the words.

It's a busy niche full of big boys. The keywords are good, and in my mind 101 fits. I figure the numbers will be somewhat discounted by Google for keyword searches. Why I'm asking is that this is a long term niche, and results will be hard fought over time. I want to keep the domain a long time and live with it. Yeah, I'm a bit paranoid, but at the same time just want a good name to be proud of in the long run. The target audience are those looking for help. The content will be top notch.

    Why would it be insulting?

Doesn't make any sense if the information is good.

How about 202 instead of 101?

    202 looks more advanced.

I did not realize that, thanks for pointing it out. The site should attract international visitors, but I suspect given the niche, it would be mostly North American.

It's a whole lot better than "for dummies". Although as we know there has been a lot of cash made under that label.

It all depends on how you want to position yourself in the mind of your market. If the majority of people are going to be looking for a basic foundation then 101 is perfect.

If however, your market wants more than the basics then you will probably get passed over.

If there were two websites or domains:

      www.listbuilding101.com

      www.advancedlistbuilding.com

I would be attracted to the second..... but I would not be offended by the first.

Hey if ".... for Dummies" books work these days, then you shouldn't have to worry.

I never thought of 101 as being insulting though... Usually it conveys information to get you rolling...

Don't forget the ..."For Idiots" guides.

There's always plenty of room at the bottom. I think "...For Completely Brain Dead Imbeciles" would be be a good seller.

I would think that many people might find this inviting since it appears to be a lower level that would suit them at this particular moment. This is America after all, the land of choices...

      I kinda like the idea.

Had never considered it, but it would probably work well on a review-oriented site.

Thank you, everyone for helping put this in perspective for me. It is going to be an information site, and I suspect it will work after more consideration and input from you guys. Naturally I would have preferred the keywords without the buffer, but I'll take what I can get.
