I hope before you do anything you....

    a) have used contracts or at the very least a signed work order outlining the request
    b) know what you are doing

Looks to me like you have a big issue with b.

If you dont know what youre doing, then perhaps you arent the right person for the job. Especially given that you say "clients website"

Im not sure if Id be comfortable paying for this!

    Just sayin' dude.

At the very least youll need an HTML editor and an FTP program. FTP the site down locally, make the changes locally, test locally, then upload live.

Always make a BACKUP of the original site before you change ANYTHING!

If you have access to their website all you have to do is open the index page and edit it their

The easiest way is through cpanel

Just go to the public html and you will find the index page there. You can download the page and edit it from an html editor and reupload it or you can just edit the page if there cpanel offers an html editor which most hosting companies do

I agree with ramone_johnny in that it sounds like you've got a lot to learn BUT...

if you've already landed a client that's awesome. I'd suggest investing some of the money into learning how to do this stuff.

To answer your direct question, you'll need to have access to their main website. Editing meta tags on a site is not very difficult. Sure, wordpress makes it easier with the all in one seo plugin, but html is pretty straight forward.

There's a section of html at the top known as the "head", and the meta tags go in there. A quick google search for meta tags should give you what you need.

I'd strongly suggest backing up the client's site first though, VERY important!

I've got to agree with Jonny and Matt, if you need to ask this kind of question you're going to have to be very careful. Make a back-up or get some else to do the job who knows what they're doing.
