Where do you get your web images?

by Jaspry

Every intriguing website requires the use of graphics and images. Stock photography agencies offer high quality pictures for low costs.

However, if you are working on a large amount of projects and require larger amounts of graphics and images, the price would add up quickly using even the smallest versions of stock photos.

So, with that said, where do you download your graphics? Stock agencies or for free somewhere else? I am asking this because my budget is extremely low, but I don't want a text-only website!

Thanks!

I use Google Image Search as well, but I am wary that some of these images might be copyrighted and that I'd get in trouble. It hasn't been the case yet, but there's always a possibility...!

Unless you're using search parameters to find public domain images, nearly all the images you get from Google Image search will be copyrighted. Even when searching for public domain images with Google Search, you'll still get many that are copyrighted.

Once an original image is published in any medium, including on the internet, it is copyright protected whether a copyright notice is present or not. It's only public domain if the copyright owner specifically places it in the public domain.

Try Wikimedia Foundation for images of all kinds that are in the public domain or have very liberal, and always free, usage policies.

OK, I looked at your page and see what you're saying. That's why I built a IM Network. I've got a professional photographer on board. When any of us needs specialty shots, he's johnny on the spot and we return the favor with our various sets of skills.

You might want to think about bartering services/products; make a family heirloom for him for reduced pricing. Or as a last resort to reduce your costs, secretly put out some bids for better pricing.

By the way, your site looks great!

            Thank you

Unfortunately the jewelry photography is really one of the toughest tasks in photography. Therefore there are only few photographers/studios able to do the job.

And they are expensive, of course.

In the last year we tried about 50 studios and results were very poor. So now we are at least happy to have good quality photographs now.

Personally my images can be split roughly into three groups. Firstly my own photos, secondly those I have paid to use from iStockPhoto and finally those I use (legally) under the Creative Commons terms from Flickr (where all images are attributed and linked to their source). On a Wordpress blog, using Flickr pictures is easy with the PhotoDropper plugin.

You can go to Welcome to Flickr - Photo Sharing and do a search for creative commons licensed photo's. Make sure to check the license requirements.

You can also search here: Creative Commons Search

Probably the best advice I've ever heard is from Ed Dale. Never go anywhere without a digital camera and take photos of everything which is interesting, odd, or might be part of a niche. You never know when you'll need them.

      S T O P ! ! !

      BAD IDEA!

These are not free images that you can use however you like.

Just do a Google search and you will SEE images, but they are NOT a "result on what to choose from".

Everybody here needs to understand that everything online is NOT free for everybody to use however they wish.

And, for the record, owners of images are some of the most fiercely protective out there. Meaning you not only run a higher risk of getting caught eventually, but of losing a LOT of money.

"Oh, well I saw it on Google so I thought I could use it" is NOT a defense.

Read the terms for every image you use.

The picture doesn't have terms? Then assume you CAN'T use it.

      All the best,

@ emydedon, you would do well to listen to Michael. There are plenty of places online to find pics in which you are given the rights to freely use. But the tactic you are using could end up backfiring on you. It's a risk; the question is, "If someone who owns the copyright to the pics you have used without permission, decides to drop the bomb on you, can you handle the repercussions?"

And by the way, following your SIG to your site, BE WARNED, you are in violation of the TOS of the Big B. How you ask? You are linking directly to an Affiliate Program. That's a NO NO! If you don't have a hosting account, there are easy ways to resolve that issue.

I have had good success at Photolia .com .

TIP: I made a mistake buying larger file versions of the photos which added up $$$ very quickly. I soon realized I could use the smaller versions at a considerably lower cost and that they were more than adequate for my web and blog needs.

You may want to test a couple of the smaller version photos first to see what works for you. I think they even have a dollar bin for slow movers.

I suppose wonder about some of these sites that state that they are showing images which are public domain, and the site is monetized by Adsense.

I always try to keep a note of where I obtained an image from in case of future problems.

A friend of mine had a problem with Getty Images when he purchased some graphics via an Elance project, and it later transpired that one models image that formed part of one graphic he received was a copyrighted image of Getty Images. It took him several months to get it all sorted and cost him a lot of money.

In my opinion, it's not worth the risk. Better to pay a very small fee and be safe.
