Video Sale Pages? Turn on or Turn off?

I have seen a few sites with nothing but a video that you cannot stop or pause or anything with no option of going forward till possibly waiting till the video is over.

Does video keep visitors to your site and make sales or are they like me that wait and wait till they finally give up and close the page and move onto another site where they don't have to wait till the extremely long winded story is finished?

What are your views on the matter?

If it is short, sounds like it might be interesting, and lets me see how long it is before starting it, I may watch it.

If it does not let me see how long it will be, doesn't let me stop it, and won't let me go forward - I don't watch it. I just hit the delete key.

I'm with Don - if I can't control it - pause it, see the length etc, then I'm gone. It drives me nuts. I'm often watching videos in between cooking supper and other boring domestic things - or the kids / hubbie interrupt and I miss a bit - blah blah. I'm absolutely infuriated when I have no control!!!

(I think that applies to all areas of my life actually!)

        Tony,

The fact is video has higher conversions and higher perceived value than
text or audio. Everything else will depend on how catchy and compelling
your message and delivery are. There's an old song called "video killed a radio star" - that happens and for some being on video is a no-no.
Also,if your delivery isn't convincing enough then a simple squeeze page
with an interesting freebie offer will work better for you.

Also: long videos that you can't fast-forward work only for the internal lists
that the "gurus" send emails to. If you market to people coming from natural search or usind paid advertising, never go beyond 5 minutes and better stay within a 3 min mark.

        That's my 2 cents.

Many users will complain about it and you will definitely piss some people off who would otherwise be interested.

I don't personally use them (since I hate personally despise them - yes, my I do let personal bias get in the way of my marketing methods sometimes), but have seem a few split tests where the data clearly showed the auto playing, unstoppable video to perform better.

      Wrong question!

You should be asking whether conversions have increased when using them and that can only be answered by testing yourself.

        Good point.

In the IM niche, I think we're so used to seeing these that we accept them. Personally I think that having a video without any controls feels a bit too much - By limiting my choices (to pause it or come back to it) I feel like I'm being forced unneccesarily. I know why they're doing it, but I personally don't like it.

Having a sales page with a video at the top works well for me. People can hit play if they want, or read the text.

Also, if your prospects are looking at your offer on a computer at work or somewhere public, an autoplaying video is going to annoy them. By all means use video, but allow the user to control it. If the video's good enough they won't pause it, but will appreciate the option.

You'll also guarantee that a number of your potential buyers won't bother to stick around until your video ends.

Salesmanship 101: when the prospects says they are ready to buy, stop talking and start taking their order.

My testing still shows video combined with long-style copy outpulls video only.

I VERY much advice you against that. Some prospects will be ready to buy before the video ends. Don't force them to watch through a video that cannot be forwarded when they're already ready to swing their credit card.

You don't wait till the end to make the button appear. I did this for one of my sites and saw a 30% increase in conversions. Testing is key. I'm sure for some niches it works great, and others it's terrible.

Also I figured out that if you disguise the video and provide some great content at the beginning, you get the people attached without them even knowing its a sales video.

    Hi,
Like most things that are/were effective (like pop-ups 10 years ago), they are often not well liked esp by those of us in the IM crowd. But as Thomas said, the only thing that matters is whether they put more money on your pocket. For what is worth I don't personally like them but would use them and see what happens!

I personally don't like video only sales pages -- especially with no access to controls. I like to scan. I don't have the time to view a 5 minute sales presentation on something I may not even be interested in. The content value would need to very compelling and rich to keep me. Usually I'll just move on...

Only your niche can answer this question for you. Most of the people on this forum will give you their reasons for either way, but our opinion is meaningless in this scenario..

Split testing on your sales page will give you the data you need to get an answer.

  • Hi, the video that doesn't stop is bad. It is like forcing something on the prospects. No one likes it. The video should play or stop when the viewer wants. When you ask "Does video keep visitors to your site and make sales"? my response is YES provided it is a decent video. Know what, videos are rich, immediate and powerful, much more so than words. Your prospects get the messages right away in a minute or less. For writing it would take at least 10 mins or more + the impact is never as strong. Words are flat & elusive, videos are dynamic & penetrating. Prospects are more ready to buy in your claims. videos are especially good for sites with a large inventory. Often, viewers get overwhelmed by the variety and features. With a short intro video, you capture your visitor, you impress them. Last but most important point, it MUST be a good video with marketing messages + call to action and great presentation. A low quality video with grainy images impresses no one. So if you decide to have a video, make sure it is a good one, and which allows the viewer to play or stop at their discretion.

Well, once I close the page, I usually don't start over.

But who cares about what I like?

What's important is whether they convert.

Do they make more money than regular sales pages? I think the answer is yes, though I haven't done the testing to prove it. And that's all that matters.

Videos have always been VIRAL and to keep it really interesting, it should be as short and straightforward as possible so that you'll not let the focus of the audience be on the silly things you say and trying to understand it but rather it should be letting them watch you until the end and click through the process.

Every word said must have the power to speak with the audience to get to what they need EXACTLY and not only assuming you'll get a sale because they need your information.

This whole debate is so amusing... even after it's
been hashed and rehashed on the forum 100 times... lol

Video is no different than audio or text... if it's interesting
and gives the reader/viewer/listener compelling reasons
to read/watch/listen to the end it will be effective.

If it's poorly done it will not.

I can't remember the last time I even looked for the pause
or stop button on a Frank Kern video. I find him interesting
and entertaining. I also believe he provides a good deal of
valuable information. Others may think differently but my
guess is Frank gets pretty good results from his videos.

So... the moral is... stop trying to guess if one medium works
better than another and start learning how to do each of them
effectively... or sub them out to someone who can.

Actually video is a great deal different than text. I live in the country with no other options, so I'm on dialup ... Video courses, video products and video sales pages are a deal breaker for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one who lives in the country and others who live in countries with very limited bandwidth.

Excellent question Tony, you can tell by the responses it has generated. Very interesting too to see how people differ in opinions.

Personally I think video sales page could be great only when they have controls for me to pause, stop, fast forward or rewind, otherwise I find them a turn off without controls. I also think some of them are too fast paced for my liking.

So in a nutshell, done what I consider properly, yeah great stuff!

    Hi,

I live out in the sticks and use the latest wireless internet hub. My bandwidth varies between 0.1mb/s and 3mb/s - In other words slow. I also use Firefox with Flash Block. It blocks bandwidth hungry flash ads. Flashblock is very, very popular. One of the top add-ons for Firefox.

This blocks all embedded flash videos - you just get a play icon if you want to play that flash segment. I never play videos as it slows down my connection and quite frankly they annoy me.

Remember too that many people still use dial up, many of us use the latest in broadband internet sticks (which are still slow no matter what they advertise) and many people view sites on iPhones, that dont play flash, and other smartphones.

Plus you have many people browsing the internet in quiet places - at work or in a library or in class even.

In my opinion I think you are alienating many of your prospective customers by relying too heavily on videos on your website.

It wasn't too long ago that "fast loading and lightweight" were the mantras of the web design world, but with broadband this seems to have gone out the window.

I'd say with all the points I've mentioned above we should still design sites that can be viewed easily and quickly by as many people as possible.

Use videos if needed, but keep them off the front page and provide an alternative page for those of us who cant or wont watch the video. "Skip Video" is my favourite button of all time!

    Cheers

I can't stand the videos that don't let you FF/Rewind especially if the video is like 30 minutes long but that's just my personal thing.

Man, people just seem to continue to miss the point.

Some people will get irked and leave. That is ok when my overall conversions increase.

That means more people get my message and purchase. I guess I will have to live with the other people complaining who were not going to purchase anyway.

I think one reason that so many people are annoyed by video sales pages is that they end up just being sales pages that you can't skim. When a sales page gets boring, you can scroll to the end and see if it's worth it you or not.

But video can be so much more. You can tell a story, you can entertain, you can brand yourself and be in it and have fun. Videos that are just powerpoint slides or camtasia screengrabs are kind of missing out. Moving pictures make an emotional connection unlike any other medium. You see a face and you connect to it on another level. Like the Kern videos mentioned above.

Just don't waste the opportunity to do something different and stand out!

    (And then, of course, test!!!)

I did what I could to send traffic to my sales page, and I was at 2% for a niche product, which in my mind, is a failure. I was making on average 2 sales a day at $24 (which is $48). Then I spent about a week solid making a catchy and quick sales video talking about the product, what it is, how its different, showing clips of the pages of the eBook, etc, and I uploaded it to YouTube, did a video response to about 100 videos of members I was targeting, wrote a couple articles, etc, and then my 2% went to 9% and my number of visitors doubled consistently. If I got 100 visitors to my website, then 9 of them would buy my product, which is $216. There were days I was averaging 200 visitors per day and I would make close to $500 a day.

I sell another eBook for $7, and my conversion rate on that doubled too, but it was a pretty competitive niche, but I started making about $14 a day on that too.

Video sales are gaining more popularity since they communicate the concept fast and easy to the would be buyer.

But when you dont give people options to stop; pause or just leave you attract the opposite and may end up converting fewer sales than if they felt they had a choice.

I have tested it before. I have had better success and conversions with one video at the left and a opt-in box on the right. Something like Product Launch Millionaires.

    But

1.) Don't use YouTube and embed your videos in the page. It looks really unprofessional.

2.) Make sure that your video generates interest and tells them how cool the product is.

3.) I was promoting the "how to get your ex back" niche a few months ago and I got the video done for $300 from Elance.com. If you are planning to get a $10 power point video, forget it.

4.) The video should not be longer than 4 minutes. My video was 2.37 Minutes.

Can you show me the type of video you got created on Elance for $300? I was also shopping to get a video created myself.

Let me put it this way...

IF I, or people like me, are your target market, video with no controls may be the very worst option you could pick. Unless your video grabs me from the beginning and is only a couple of minutes long - and I know it's coming - I'm out of there before you get to take your second breath.

You see, I'm a bit of a control freak. And I'm wary of anything that appears to hijack my computer, even if it's something benign like a sales video.

The other deadly sin of marketing to people like me is being boring. I don't need to spend twenty minutes listening to a talking head reel off a list of features or contents I could read in a minute or two.

That being said, if I or people like me are not your target market, give it a try. Just don't come back and post a whiny thread about how people won't watch your video and click away before it's over...

Personnally, I do not like it if you can not hit pause. In the way of the length of the video, I do not mind, it's just if you can not pause it or skip a head that really bugs me.

What are your views on the matter?
Well, it is better if your visitor has an option on what they will do on that video, don't let your visitor get frustrated because of that. Think of another way of putting interesting things to your video so your visitor will watch it, till the end.

Personally I NEVER watch online videos.

Perhaps its a generational thing. I was in my 30s before youtube was invented so am not used to videos, and find them a pain. I prefer to scan read so sales copy works better on me.

For others I am sure it is different. Why not mix it up a little, with videos on the sales page, but supplemented by all the text you need to describe the product too.

Personally I do not like being forced to watch. If I do not find control I get irked.

  • As an internet browser, autostart is OK by me but hiding the control buttons is not OK.
