Where do you guys buy your domains from?

Hi (1st post!! hehe) - i had a look about for a FAQ thread and didnt see one on here for my question, and i tried the forum search but i couldnt find the information i was looking for.

Since you guys all seem to know what your doing and talking about, i was curious where you all buy your domains from? I know theirs godaddy and the likes, but i was more interested in getting the most out of my dollar etc. Are there domain sellers that allow you to bulk buy a set of 10 domains for example? Are there any really good domain selling companies that really give you good value for money?

So where do you guys buy your domains from??

Your domain name is your most valuable asset. A hacker can take down your site temporarily but if you lose your domain that you have spent years building up a brand on you have lost it all.

I can't understand why anyone would trust their most valuable asset with a company like Godaddy just to save a few bucks? It's a really poor decision if you are planning to build a real business on your domain.

Look at where the domain professionals hold their domains. I mean the guys that have one or several domains that are worth six or seven figures.

For those that care about their domains I would recommend fabulous (with security key or executive lock) for .com's, .nets's etc. and Domainmonster for UK domains.

omnis.com - been using them for over a year. still have some with godaddy, netsol and dotster, but nearly all new ones go with omnis.com now. Not *cheapest* - $8.95 - but not most expensive either. They remember my billing and nameserver info between purchases, which is nice - godaddy I seemed to have to enter nameserver info each purchase.

Namecheap is where most of the marketers go....and they are the most reliable.

GoDaddy tried to screw Mike Filsaime one time, so after that happened, a lot of people stopped using them...and most moved over to NameCheap.com

I would start right here on the forum.

Most of us have at least 50 domain names we renew every year and don't want to admit we have them. Tell the forum what you are looking for and you might just be surprised what you get. I got POTGUY.com for free here and turned around and put up a blog for a doctor friend of mine.

thats a better price, but they still have the same policy in place as with godaddy in respects to spam.

I will definately buy a domain as cheap as i can if its the same offer from two different companies and the product is the same.

I have mine distributed between Godaddy and Namecheap. Godaddy has good bulk pricing, so if I'm buying in bulk, I Go Godaddy. Namecheap is easier to use on dialup for those of us who live in the country and I prefer it. Just Google Namecheap (Month) coupon to get a small discount when purchasing.

One word of advice I'd like to extend to you is to only search for a domain when you intend to actually buy it.

It has been reported several times a good domain (once found) will be snatched before you can get that next cup of coffee.

Welcome onboard to a great forum.

Personally, I buy from GoDaddy.com. I also always search for GoDaddy coupons andd always seem to find decent coupons flying around. Remember to do this - over multiple domains and multiple years of registration, this will addd up enough to pay for parts of your other costs.

Go with Godaddy until you plan to be successful.

Here's what I mean. Their policies are anti-internet marketer, and to leave them is a royal hassle whether you are successful or not. I too had a problem with Godaddy, and it was like pulling teeth to pick up my domain and LEAVE!!! The thing is, if you advertise the way most internet marketers do . . . building a list . . . you WILL run into problems.

Namecheap is great!!! Their price is not the lowest, but they offer several advantages over some of the other registrars.

Enom is also great . . . @ Enom.com. I especially like their control panel. To get one of the lowest prices @ Enom, search "enom reseller". What I like about them on their control panel I dislike in their renewal policy, though.

Every domain registrar has a different policy when it comes to renewals. Say you forget about renewing a domain until after it is due. At Namecheap, you can be late and not pay an upcharge/extra penalty to renew even when it has gone into redemption period. At Enom, after so many days beyond the renewal date you have to pay the renewal price plus an extra "redemption period" price. It's over $150! Namecheap, just pay the registration price.

I get lower pricing @ Enom ($7.95) but would end up paying extra if I forget about a name. But the truth is, forgeting about renewals is very much preventable @ Enom, as they have a system where if you have enough $$$ in your account they will automatically renew the domain 30 days prior to the renewal date, and you are able to set each domain separately to either autorenew or not. However, because of the lower price I get, they charge 3% to use a credit card to pay for a domain and only take a minimum $100 credit card charge, which puts $97 into the domain account for actual domain shopping/renewals. Don't want to pay the 3%, I can send them money orders or cashiers checks and they credit 100% of the $$$ to the account, and when sending the checks or money orders via mail I do not have to send in $100, I can send in less. So what I have done is created an item in my budget as an additional expense and then buy a money order and just send it in like any other bill to avoid the 3% charge.

Another registrar that sounds great at first is 1and1.com. They were charging $5.99 when I was with them. But I wasn't so happy with their control panel; it was awkward. And at 1and1.com, when a domain is due for registration they don't just lock that domain. They lock down YOUR ENTIRE ACCOUNT until you pay for that one domain. Their domain purchase system is automatically autorenew, and you have to jump through hoops to get them to turn off autorenew. You cannot do it through the control panel, you have to send a support ticket! I found out the hard way; had a credit card that had been reissued (expiration date lapsed) and they locked the entire account up on me. Meanwhile I'm waiting for a new card to come in the mail, and they won't let me make changes to domains in the account that were NOT up for renewal. It was also a pain in the rear to move from them, as their system keeps sending me notices that I need to renew domains I have long ago transferred away from them. Another thing about 1and1.com is that their system is a lot less responsive than other registrars. Changes that take minutes to a few hours elsewhere would take two days to kick in with them.

I mention 1and1.com to say that price is not everything when shopping for a domain registrar. And the truth is, I think Namecheap is a reseller for Enom. But their policies are different from Enom. I like getting the lower price with Enom, and when I login their control panel is such that I can click on a column and get a big picture of what's going on. Also, when I first login the system will alert me to what domains are getting close to renewal time, what's past renewal time but before the "extra expense" period and about to be dropped, and it's all nice and orderly and easy to figure out.

But someone else mentioned that you need to NOT shop for domains until you are ready to purchase. The reason for this is, some registrars are set up to snatch up a domain that has been searched for if it is not bought within a certain amount of time. Being a registrar, they don't have to pay for the domain for 5 days. Then they monitor the traffic and other stats and decide to pay for it or not. So if you happen to search for a domain you want, find it available, get distracted, then come back and see it gone 5 minutes later, don't worry about it. Make a note of it, and if you really want the domain just come back 5-6 days later and try again. You may find it available again! By the way, based on the way I have shopped for domains (and specifically tested for this a few times), Namecheap is NOT one of those registrars. One reason to pay a little more to go with them over others. Enom? Looks like you may need to pay right away from where I'm sitting. That means have the credit card in hand before you start your search.

Also, if you decide to go with Enom check the pricing. They are set up to allow people like you and me to resell domains at a higher price than what they charge, through their system and/or panel. So not all Enom accounts have the pricing I mentioned above. Some are higher. If you wanted to get into charging more for domain names than you are paying, using Enom is great because you have the option to have each domain have a separate password and login/control panel if you wish. This facilitates selling a domain and still allowing the customer access to it after you have registered it but still charging them a higher dollar amount if you wanted to if they want to stay with you for the registration. It would be another potential profit center for someone using Offline Gold methods to make money, and it can even allow the customer to login and make the payment using credit card without you having to get set up for credit card processing...check out their Registry Rocket. My point here is, make sure you get rock bottom pricing if you decide to go with Enom.

Hope this helps you develop a big picture on the domain industry. Don't forget, price is not everything in the registrar business.

I tried GoDaddy before and they are good for domain names, afterall they are the world's biggest domain registrar. If you like, you can sign up with their email updates as they send discount offers from time to time. Currently there's a 20% off for orders $65 and above till April 18 (at least that's what the email tells me) so if you are thinking of bulk purchases, you can consider them.

For years I have used Godaddy, then went over to lifedomain.net saved a few bucks plus you can see it is actually from the same source as Godaddy. So if you want to save a few bucks you can use them instead.

Recently, I have also registered a domain with namecheap.

I really like how namecheap allows you to search multiple domains at one time, very helpful when you are brainstorming domains and see what is actually available.

If you decide to search around, pay attention to their privacy policy. If they share their information to third parties, the lower income companies will sell your information to others to make extra income. These other companies will steal your domain and register it before you do. They do this with various domains to test which ones will make money.

Just something to keep in mind.

I always buy them through my host company, iPage (which I highly recommend, by the way). I could probably find them cheaper elsewhere, but I like having everything easily visible and renewable in one place. I'd imagine it's easy enough to lose track of things if you've got a lot of websites with domains registered by different providers. The way I've got it set up, I'll never lose the rights to a domain I own because I forgot to renew it.

You can buy from godaddy, their prices are very good, and some times they have good coupons. If anyone needs one, just use "499domain" on checkout, and you can buy .com domain at godaddy for $4.99 + ICANN fee all in all .com domain price for first year is $5.17. BTW, this code is supposed to be good also for renewals, but I personally can attest only that it works on new domains.

I'm a professional domain investor. If you want to buy and sell domains professionally, use moniker. They cost 2x the price of many places but you are able to trade with other domain investors with confidence because they have excellent personal assistance, features, help pushing domains etc. If you plan to work with any kind of small business use godaddy and for regular work online namecheap is great. However be careful when it comes to how you can (or can't) autorenew. The also have free privacy and there are free coupons all around (just go to google blog search and you can find April 2010 namecheap coupons)

Can you help me to understand why you're sending me PM's claiming that QUOTE "you've received an infraction because your font size is too large". Apparently you don't know who I am - the information I just gave that fellow would have cost 3 figures.....

This kind of behavior doesn't exactly incentivize crowd-sourced learning....rather trite if you ask me....

        Hey

It doesn't matter to me, other members, mods or owner of WF whether the information was worth the 3k or 3 cents. What's more important is to read and follow the rules.

        (3) Sig files may only be written in the normal standard font size.
Again, in a community of 100k+ members, a portion is breaking rules. That's why "Members are Moderators".

If you need any further assistance in this matter, please ask for help in Helpdesk or PM mods.

I use GoDaddy and have never had any issues.

If you have more than 300 domains then you will become a GoDaddy VIP. This is where it gets really nice. I have my own VIP rep that will call me if there is anything wrong with any of my names.

I have never lost a name that I didn't want to lose. I have even canceled names and then retrieved them at 25 days after with no extra fee

I have never paid for a name that I did not want. When I see the billing and notice that I forgot to cancel a name then my guy takes care of it for me.

I know they have all the "extra" crap but once you get used to that then I think their interface is the best I have seen.

They have a good and wide set of tools that make it very easy to manage your domains.

I own a Web Development and hosting business so I am always in an out of different registrars. I can say very confidently that I am very happy with GoDaddy.

I tend to alternate between Namecheap and Godaddy - I like the simplicity of the order process at Namecheap (no crazy upsells or lots of pages to click through), but yet I'm too lazy to transfer my existing domains at Godaddy to Namecheap. Godaddy always seems to have great specials that don't exist elsewhere at other registrars, so I still buy domains from them.

Using Namecheap and Godaddy, but I got to say I prefer Namecheap as the interface is much more user friendly, and I can set my DNS when i purchase my domain, unlike Godaddy where I have to login and go into the settings to do that.

    Hi,

I'm using both namecheap and godaddy.

My personal opinion, if you are new in your domain purchasing, namecheap is the best place to buy the domain because their interface is user-friendly. Please don't click 'standard checkout button' after you have selected your domain you might not find your way out. Get the namecheap coupon for this month and year and you will get for .com domain the price is only at 9.28 with free Whoisguard. Renewal the domain not so much different in pricing.

so my personal reccomendation go for namecheap.

    Best regards,
    Maleeqa

I've used GoDaddy for years. I've tried the others listed and I prefer Godaddy as it is quick and reliable. If you go to google.com and type in "godaddy coupon" right now they have a great special going on right now. Up to 3 domains for $4.95 each and only $7.95 for any additional. This beats most bulk pricing and you only have to buy 1 if you want.

The main point is...stop wondering and take action! Go buy that domain now and get your squeeze page up!! Can't make any money until you do!! : )

My vote is for GoDaddy--very established, reliable and responsive. I know they try to up sell a lot, but you gotta use your own discretion on what you take them up on. But just the bulk search and new alternative suggestion has been very helpful.

PLUS+++ A BIG + is there is 24/7 support and even if you go to them with the stupidest newbie question, or lame lost password thing, (which I must admit I've done a few times!) they are 100 percent courteous, kind and helpful, and walk you through EVERYTHING! The only downside is getting your domains away from them--I tried once and, as another warrior said, it was like pulling teeth. But my rationale is simple: I don't mind paying extra for the support and peace of mind. Have 130+ domains and NO complains. Hope this helps. Chet.

    @Hustlinsmoke

At first, I thought SOPA was going to be a good idea. I was just reading about it, and of course no content creator wants their stuff stolen. The problems really come in when they get down to what is and is not copyright infringement.

Would PLR be considered infringement? Obviously the creators allow PLR to be posted everywhere, but is someone quickly looking through millions of websites to deem them legal or illegal going to make that distinction? Is that person going to care or understand how PLR works?

Not only that, but websites that accidentally harbor any illegal files would be shut down. Obviously a lot of people, like Pirate Bay, know they are. However, there are many file repositories that actively try to fight piracy, and they would be shut down due to the overwhelming volume of pirates.

Also, your computer would be legally monitored at all times to ensure you don't download any illegal files. What happens if a redirect comes along and forces you to go to a website with illegal files? I don't want to spend 10 years in jail for some forced redirect.

What if you are a Web host or a hosting reseller. Do you think you can actively spare the time and manpower to look through millions of websites to ensure that none of them have illegal content? That would make domain and hosting prices SKYROCKET and it would make this business model completely infeasible.

You see, I agree that copyright piracy is wrong, I really do. However, the proposed SOPA law isn't refined enough to really work on the Internet.

PS: to those saying GoDaddy supports SOPA, they just stopped. Dec 30, they officially removed their support and now they are against SOPA.

Well done! I hope @hustlinsmoke and all warriors can read this comment and understand how godaddy is too dangerous ...

Godaddy stopped support SOPA because is losing all the costurmers, that ones that gone will never look back, how can you trust a company like that?
If they think you're doing any kind of spam, even if you not, they just shut down your domain first and then they email you the reason why they think you wrong, if you wanna get back the same domain you must pay over $100, do you think this is fair???? why you have to pay this money fo a domain is already yours and Godaddy shutdown???? Somowhere in the bulk a domain is available for $200 and then you go in another company like(namecheap,name.com) you find the same domain for $9...It's kind of joke, really. How in earth they can be so bad???
People be careful with Godaddy, they wanna take control of your business and SOPA thing is not really surprise.

      Regards,

Do some research for yourself. I believe you'll find some very positive review on N-C.

    Hope this will help you,

namecheap never resell domains like godaddy did, so in that aspect, they are probably more honest in dealing with your domains? haha. I am a long time namecheap customer, never has a single issue for the past 5 years.

I know theirs godaddy and the likes, but i was more interested in getting the most out of my dollar etc. Are there domain sellers that allow you to bulk buy a set of 10 domains for example? Are there any really good domain selling companies that really give you good value for money?

So where do you guys buy your domains from??
    I recommend Domain Names

i STRONGLY DISLIKE godaddy's cumbersome interface.

I used to work for a multi-million dollar internet company.

And everything was dont there through Moniker.

I have used many others, and i just like the simplicity and domains there usually have regular prices that are lower than the competition.

Its hard to get discount coudes though.

Thats where Go Daddy is good, the few domains i have there, i have because i get discount codes out of thin air.

Good service/a little pricier (ask them for a discount if you buy bulk): moniker.com

Edit: there are coupons for both name.com and namecheap.com, don't be lazy and look for them. No reason at all to use godaddy.

  • GoDaddy has features that allow you to do pretty much anything with your domain. It's a fully featured account.

GoDaddy has 24/7 live telephone support. Can your register offer that?

GoDaddy is very quick to get back to you with support tickets if you use them.

GoDaddy has an actual street address.

    GoDaddy develops then own software.

Remember Register Fly? Right. It's your money but if your registrar can't provide a real street address and telephone support what you are you really buying?

I started out with GoDaddy but a few years ago I moved everything to Namecheap. I like their interface much better. Not to mention new domains transfer their DNS settings super quick so you can start using them right away. I always ended up having to wait with GoDaddy. NameCheap also has really great support and they are very active on Facebook which is nice because its an easy way to get quick questions answered. Not to mention they put out really great deals on a regular basis.

Like many others here - I used GoDaddy for several years, but have now moved to NameCheap (for new registrations, am in the process of migrating the rest). I made the choice before the whole SOPA thing came up.

Namecheap also offers free WHOIS guard, if that's important to you.

Moniker is somewhat of a sinking ship right now, with lots of domains moving out of there, but for anyone not wanting to use GoDaddy, they are fine. NameCheap and Name.com are fine too but I don't like that they used SOPA as a marketing tool...IMO it showed a certain level of disrespect for the actual anti-SOPA stance.

Guys. Might I suggest not just moving your domains away from GoDaddy, but also moving them away from US domain registrars in general?

There are a couple of companies that come to mind. One I discovered through someone else's recommendation, the other I discovered because my registrar was bought out and I landed there by accident.

    1. Internet.bs - also Internetbs.net - based in the Bahamas.
    2. Hover.com - based in Canada

    #1 was recommended to me.
#2 I landed at after a company buy-out of a TUCOWS-affiliated registrar. (Not going to go into the TUCOWS thing or the companies bought out, it's a long story that starts out @ EV.net, goes on to another and another and another . . .)

Bottom line for me is, I have never used Internetbs.net but plan to in the future.

Hover.com, I did use but do not presently use anymore. The reason is not because of their service, though . . . it was EXCELLENT! I left there because I was consolidating; I had too many domains scattered throughout several registrars to the point of possibly losing a domain because I forgot about it more than once.

And when I say EXCELLENT, I mean PHONE SERVICE was excellent! Patient and understanding and technically knowledgeable people on the phone. And no, I did NOT spend a lot of time on hold! So if you like phone service you definitely want to check Hover.com out.

The registrar I moved everything to? Enom.com. I have had the account for a very long time and everything is very logically laid out. I'm just used to that account and their interface just makes sense to me. I may change that in the near future, however right now it was easiest for me to stick with them, even to the point of paying a little more right now than I could get someplace else just because my current thought process and mantra for the new year is "KISS" or "Keep It Simple, Silly"!

I am not knocking Namecheap in any way, though. I am also consolidating away from them for simplicity sake as well. But the one thing I like about Namecheap that I absolutely do NOT like about Enom is, forget to renew a domain on Namecheap, it's a support ticket to get it back but not a costly one, even up to the last days before the drop and you actually lose it. Forget to renew a domain on Enom and get up to the last few days before the drop and it will cost you a pretty penny (more like $200 or so in pennies!).

Whatever you decide, SOPA or no SOPA, you have to do what's right for you and your business.

One piece of advice I have learned is never accept the free domain name from a web hosting company. It you move your hosting to another company, they will make you pay a fortune for the domain name. They own it, not you. Not every web hosting company does this, but I would make sure of the ownership of the domain before I accept it. By the way, I use GoDaddy or one of their resellers like Domains Priced Right.

I started my own totally free reseller account at resell.vipfreedomain.com which not only allows you to buy at wholesale prices for domains but also gives you a fully functional ready made website to sell domain registrations to others if you like. However I don't market my reseller site i just sell domains names to myself and if anyone finds my site and buys a domain name more power to me.

I do use namecheap.com for .info domain names, they are only $2.99 which is cheaper than my wholesale rate.

By the way I recommend that you always have a godaddy account because if you by a domain name from some private companies or individual's most of them will only want to transfer the name to you through godaddy which means you will need a goddady account for them to transfer it to you.

i'd have to have super confidence in a new company and a very good reason to move my existing domains somewhere else.. i had to do that when registerfly went under about 7 years back.. anyone remember that? turned out one of the company execs had basically been partying using the company bank account
