Can you tell if someone else's site is successful?

Are there any tricks to evaluating a website and recognizing that it must be successful for its owner?

I spend a lot of time looking at affiliate websites for Clickbank and Amazon products, trying to learn from what others are doing. But I can never tell if what they're doing is working.

What clues should I be looking for? -- Patey88

    go to compete.com and check a website's traffic stats. anything over 10k unique visitors would be considered a successful website.

    then go and clone the site or offer!

      Sorry, but all these "estimation" sites are worthless. I just ran my site through there, and I get more traffic in two days than they give me credit for per month. They don't have access to your actual server log files, all they are is guesses based on whatever criteria they choose.

      Patey88, I don't know of any way to know how successful a site is by looking at unless it's a site like this where you can see how busy it is by the participation of its membership. I assume you're referring to content sites or sales sites though, rather than sites with a visible number of users.

    I agree "estimation" sites can give such a false impression. They are not good to compare at all. The bottom line is how good is your site and are you getting traffic and buyers there.

    Check out "Contact Us", call them up and tell them you have come across a cool new place to drive some traffic to their site. You are interested in becoming an affiliate and can offer the opportunity of some huge spikes in traffic, and, revenue. okay, maybe in a slightly subtler way.

    From this technique, using empathy and asking some great questions, you can find out everything from the number of UV's every month, to the name of the CEO's kids !

    such an over kill response for such a simple question..if the site you are evaluating is on page 1 of go0gle for the keyword being targeting then you can pretty much guess thats its making money...so another words, focus on getting your sites to page 1 of go0gle for the keyword being targeting and you WILL make money.

      Those traffic estimating sites run way low for my sites, too. But maybe I can combine all these answers and get something meaningful. Like, look at a top 10 site for a niche, and then look up its estimated traffic, and then assume estimations are equally wrong for all sites in the niche, and then compare the traffic of non-top-10 sites.

      I'll play with it, but I get the feeling I won't be able to draw any conclusions.

    I suppose with a blog the number of comments they have for each post is some sort of indication if they have 10 posts and no comments they probably don't have much traffic or at least not much that sticks around for more than a few seconds.

    Some sites will of course attract a lot of spam comments so you have to allow for that. If a blog is nofollow and has a lot of comments that's a good indication of quality traffic
