Niche Research - Where Have I Gone Wrong?

Okay, so i normally let other people do my niche research for articles etc etc, but after digging deep and finding out about this tedious task myself, i thought i would give it a damn good go.

So, i created a list of what i thought was 100 pretty profitable keywords in various niches and offered it to my list...oooops!

Less than 1000 search terms, a fair few keywords with copyright issues...a few people not over the moon...that's okay..i can take criticism..but take a look yourself at the list and tell me what's wrong with it?

First column keyword, second column local search, third column global:

I always thought that obviously using copyrighted names was a bad idea, but you were allowed to use terms that people were searching for within that niche?

Every single one of these has a top level domain available...decent searches...very weak competition...am i missing something?

No doubt some of you guys will find some goodies in that list...

The copywright laws have been confusing to me. 2 months ago I got excited and bought a domain which happens to be the most popular make and model golf club "ever made". I thought I was on to something. I asked opinion here and it was enough to make me hold off. http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...egalities.html

personally i wouldn't use brand names at in the domain name. i had a lot of issues last year with this and a particular brand name and the hassle of media lawyers i received is just not worth it. In the end I ended up giving the domain as it was not worth the trouble.

I ended up promoting via one of my own domains and added a blog into a folder called the keywords..

    regards

    Steve

Many affiliate programs prohibit you using their trademarked names in your domain name. They also prohit bidding on them in PPC.

I have a question then - If you build a site with a generic niche name and want to rank high in google for a brand name, how would you do it?

Using an example from the list above, 'pioneer cd players', you could have your domain as 'cdPlayerReviews' and then target the brand you want by reviewing it as a post or page, etc. You could even have a category of Pioneer CD players within your website and review different models on different pages/posts

That way, you can target the keywords/brands you want, without having the brand names in the domain itself.

Thanks for the post , there may be many more in this queue . but your list is definitely going to help lot of people who are confused where to start from..this can act as a base line for them..

We can collect them from google keyword tool..

Just don't use the trademark name in your domain so you won't get into trouble.

What's your definition of "very weak" competition? I've randomly picked one keyword from your list and based on the first page listings, it looks pretty competitive to me (9 out of 10 have high prs and most have thousands of backlinks).

But overall, I'm sure one can still get some niche ideas from your list.

    Hi Jay,

The search results are just one part of the equation. The next part has to do with how much competition there is in that niche.

I did a Google search for one of your terms, "wireless usb camera." There are over 16 million organic results. It's going to be difficult to get to page one on the search engines! Especially with a product that's sold by stores with deep pockets.

If you search for Abril Lavigne on Google, it will default to Avril Lavigne. That has 160 million results, and even if you insist on using Abril you get 16 million searches.

Also, your list needs to find a way to create a strong website that offers these items at competitive prices in order to make money with them. They might be able to use Adsense for a while, but if the website doesn't deliver, it's not likely to be successful.

imho finding a great niche is a bit of an art. If you can genuinely fill a need, and if you care enough about the subject to do it justice, that's the key.

I think all the comments are spot on using brand names can be fraught with issues and problems and there's no need to when there are so many other more straight forward opportunities out there
