As a publisher, I sure hope not. I don't want to waste my time promoting something that doesn't convert well that will be dropped from the network because the advertiser can't afford to pay for the conversions they did get.

Working with CPA networks has a very real cost, but so does opening a McDonald's, or starting any brick 'n mortar business. I'd look at it from that standpoint.

Where do they say THEY get you the traffic? None of my networks say that.

Some networks have huge initial costs to be able to get your product, or offer onto their network.

CPA sounds like a dream to everybody who wants to build a business but is just starting off.

The inherent promise of CPA networks is: "WE get you the traffic and YOU only pay per action (= sale)."

It's perfect, because I don't have tons of money to spend on advertising when I start out AND I don't have a lot of contacts that help me to promote my stuff.

CPA Networks have the affiliates and I have the product. In the end both win and everybody is happy.

It's a beautiful system and sounds perfect on paper.

However: I don't know anything about CPA Networks and CPA in general. Everything I've read about it scared me away. It all seems super complicated and impossible for a business which is just starting off (but is very serious about it and not just some "getting rich quick"-stuff).

If you go to CPA Networks they always seem to have tons of requirements. And I understand that, they can't take on everybody.

It's just so weird: CPA is such a dream model to start off and yet it doesn't seem to exist.

So, slap me in the face with reality: Is there a CPA-network out there who takes on untested, unproven products FOR FREE...?

Again: CPA networks all seem like a big mystery to me. I know that Amish Shah talked about them in the Magic Bullet launch (and even owns one) but I still don't get it completely. If anybody can tell me a little bit about it and how it works "behind the curtains", I would GREATLY appreciate it.

Ok, first of all, when you say CPA around here, most people are going to think ringtone sign ups and the like.

CPA does mean cost per action, but generally applies to a lead form or trial or something of that nature.

What kind of product are you trying to sell? If I'm understanding your first post correctly you're looking for an affiliate program to sell your product on.

If it's a digital good (ebook, etc) then Clickbank is a cheap place for you to get started. They pay their affiliates on a per sale basis and you can leverage over 100000 affiliates that way.

This does not mean that you're going to get instant traffic. you'll still have to pitch your affiliate program.

If you're trying to get LEADS (what most CPA programs do) and want to pay every time someone signs up on your form, you're going to have a hard time getting into any networks without a decent out of pocket expense.

One place that I have found that offers the ability to pay per lead, sale, or even a combination of both is Affiliate Program Tracking Software - AffiliateShop.. They do have a sign up cost and a monthly fee, and if you want them to pay your affiliates too (so you don't have to worry about it) expect to pay for that as well.

Any way you slice it, you're going to have to pitch affiliates to promote your offer. Traffic isn't just going to magically appear because you signed up for a network.

I don't do CPA at all, and I hope and trust others will correct me if I have this wrong, but my impression is that the "action" part of "cost per action" actually means "action which is less than a sale", e.g. it can be registering with a site, supplying an email address, answering a questionnaire or even signing up for a free trial ... but the one thing it isn't is a sale? Am I wrong?

You are correct, generally CPA is refering to a lead generation type of offer, but I suppose "technically" it could be a sale.

Technically speaking, CPA can be cost per sale... but within the IM community, it's pretty much fallen into the cost per sign up or cost per trial offer and the like, and "affiliate marketing" is the cost per sale model. Even though CPA is affiliate marketing and affiliate marketing is CPA.

CPA is also an advertising method just like CPC (cost per click, aka PPC) and CPM (cost per 1000 impressions).
