Listbuilding - I wish I'd done this sooner...

This is so simple.

Every time you get an inquiry about your services, or enter
into a conversation on the phone, in person or in email, about
IM (if you're in the IM niche) - tell the other person:

"If it's alright with you I'm going to add you to my email
list. You can unsubscribe if you find my emails annoying,
but I don't think you will."

It's way better is you have a single opt-in option on your
autoresponder for this tactic.

Just because somebody sends you an email or calls you on
the phone doesn't make them a subscriber... yet these people
are, because of the personal interaction factor, way, way more
likely to buy from you and recommend your business to others...
IF they remember your name and where to find you.

Make it easy for them.

As I said - I wish I'd done this sooner.

Believe it or not--if you are talking on the phone to someone, they may not want extra mail on their email site. Why? Many non IMers only have one email address that they guard as gold. I would not do that -might create hostilities.

Of course---if they agree...but what if they forget, how do you prove that they agreed to it???

Just my 2 cents or my thoughts.

I personally feel that there is no harm in asking the person whether he want to join the email list. If he agrees, it will be win - win for both side as the marketer will have one more subscriber and the subscriber will be receiving more quality information provided the marketer is providing good content.

I think it is important to let the person know that they can always unsubscribe from the newsletter if they do not find it useful.

Great tip! I used that quite a bit in my earlier list building days and I would say that most people agreed to be on the list and some of those people became some of my most interactive audience members.

I still think it depends on the context with which you met the person but in most cases, if you are on a call or IM discussion, you have developed enough of a relationship to at least invite them to join
