UPDATED: Here's how You can Create Those Ryan Deiss "Delayed" Payment Buttons and Opt-In Forms

Since Ryan Deiss' launch this week talked about and showed a delayed payment button that appeared after a certain point in his video, I put together this quick tutorial and text file to allow anyone to do the same.

Pretty much anybody who follows the instructions in this video can create a delayed appearance button or form in just a few minutes following this video.

If you have any questions or problems put them in the comments and I'll answer them!

[NOTE TO MODS: No links or mentions of any of my websites in the video. If there's a problem in any way with the content, let me know and I will change it.]

UPDATE

I added another option with a slightly different code that allows you to show a button for a certain amount of time rather than keeping it visible forever. To avoid confusion I put the attachment and instructions in a response. You can see it here:

The text file in the video is below:

Thanks for sharing. I never understood the psychology behind the delayed order button. Why wouldn't you just have the order button there the whole time? Why make the person watch the entire video if he wants to order right away?

I have used a delayed button set successfully on a one-time-offer page where I wanted to prevent "instant" scrolling to either the "no thanks" or the "order" link. I'm not sure it works well for video sales pages.

I have also used it successfully for opt-in videos that were more like "advertorial" videos--content followed by a pitch to sign up for more.

I guess it's because it prevents people from assuming/realizing that you're actually selling something before you get to your offer.

If they see a "buy now" button immediately, then they know they are about to get sold on something...

...and not everyone wants to get sold before they "get sold", if you catch my drift... ;-)

I think he has tested it and it has probably worked for him but I really hate to see videos like that.

Ryan likes to send people to "Free Video Presentations". If there is an order button sitting underneath it, it is not a video presentation, it is a sales video.

      Thanks Chris. Two thoughts:

I don't know how Ryan implements this, but if he had a programmer create some kind of user-friendly software with a dummy proof user interface that would be far superior to my "how to" video--though I haven't seen Ryan's product so I wouldn't know.

Second thought: most people find looking at the code on a page to be completely confusing. I suspect this tutorial--though simple for many people--will be tough for many others to implement. That's one of the reasons I offered to answer questions here.

I'm really interested in seeing stats on how video marketing is working for people. It would be cool once you get your project up if you could fill us in (hint, hint.)

    Hi, Kevin

Thank you for sharing this and for the simple, simple video for non-technically-minded folks. It's no good sharing a script/coding tip if people don't know how to -- or can't manage to -- implement it. Good job there.

Ron's question was a good one and I like your answer to it, as well as Nick's answer. Any other ideas/suggestions/etc. for how to use it would be great!

I especially like the "advertorial" video idea and Nick's point that you want people to be soldbefore you start selling.

Anyway, thanks again for a great little tutorial and what I think will be a useful-if-used-judiciously script.

    Nice one!

    Hey Kevin...

Excellent share! All this time I thought I needed to dink around with I-Frames
to accomplish what you did with a short script.

Question... will this also work with a video embedded in a table?
Example: "Turn up your speakers... the video will begin in 5 seconds"

Then of course, the video appears and begins playing in 5 seconds.
Will that work? Would I even need the table?

You'd still need the table if you were using tables in your layout rather than CSS (most likely--I'd actually have to look at your page to know for sure.)

It should work with a video, try it and let me know. If it DOESN'T work then email me with a link to the page and I'll see if I can figure out why and then create a quick work-around.

Forget what I told you a second ago--I've been thinking about it and what I think would most likely happen is that the video would begin playing immediately but your visitor could not be able to see it--they could hear it, but not see it.

There is a pretty simple way to make your video not begin until after a certain time, but it would mean executing the video script as javascript rather than html.

Thanks for the response... I see what you mean about the audio

I often use one of Josh Anderson's video players that allows you

I think one reason for delaying the appearance of the Buy button is so people can't make a decision based solely on price.

If you have a video and a Buy button the prospect can click Buy and see what the price is BEFORE they are aware of the benefits of the product.

If there is just a video, you have the chance to make your pitch and get them to WANT the product before you let them know the price.

Kevin - I'm just implementing this in Wordpress today and I'm a bit stuck with how to proceed. Should I paste the "step 1" code in my header file? Will the "style" bit interfere with the wordpress style sheet?

How are people best able to implement this code in wordpress?

Ok I've implemented this in WordPress and it works just fine!

I'm using a theme called FlexSqueeze, which has its own nuances. It is a purchased theme designed for squeeze page and sales page creation.

Here's what I did to make Kevin's code work (simple as can be):

    1) I grabbed one of the squeeze page templates from my web server and pasted in the code Kevin gave directly into the template, before the closing head tag.

    2) I made a new "test page" in Wordpress and put some text inside of the div tags that Kevin gave us.

    3) I assigned the new test page to the template file that I edited.

    It all worked perfectly!

Awesome. I hadn't tried it with WordPress, but it should work.

To create this in WordPress it might help people to know where they can find the "head" tag in their theme...

Go to your WordPress Dashboard and Click on Appearance:

      Click on Editor:

On the RIGHT HAND SIDE you should see a list of the pages in your theme. One of them should be called "header.php" or something very similar like "pageheader.php", "topofpage.php", etc. Click to edit that page:

Scroll down looking in the code for the closing "head" tag:

Paste in your code just above the closing "head" tag and click the "update file" button.

Once this is done you should be able to place the two "div" tags around the content you want to delay and it should work.

    Ok guys,

Here's my take on the whole issue of why we'd like to delay the order button, or ANYTHING for that matter.

    1) We want to hold your attention a bit before we give you a method of clicking off our video

    2) We don't want the video to look like a squeeze page with an optin form, so we delay the appearance of the optin form for a bit

There are LOTS of other reasons, and I definitely find this useful. That said, I really hate the 20 minute presentations with no buy button until the end. That just annoys me. But you have to test this stuff to know what your profit will do. There is no point asking "what's the point" if you are too closed minded to try it out.

I'm implementing a new video squeeze page and I'm using this code to delay the Aweber form until about 60 seconds into the video. They'll be VERY interested in the video at that point and the aweber form will be seen as value-added, not "salesy". At least that's the goal.

I'll be testing this by sending all my PPC traffic to the new squeeze page before I unload it on all traffic being sent by all sources.

The delay works just fine but during the time when the button is hidden the length of the site remains the same, so if the content was allready there.

Someone apparently took offense and deleted my post explaining the downside of using this technique and telling where you can get an open source solution. I explained it showing how that free solution is the base of one of my products and someone must have thought I was too promotional (in which case, I'd have to say they didn't watch the video or they wouldn't think that).

If you want to see the problem and a solution, search for Problem with the Magic Button Code on YouTube and it will come up.

The best thing about the code in this thread is how easy it is to use -- but if you're going to use it you should also know the problem with it. For some the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, but at least you'll be making decisions based on knowledge.

The problem you point out in the video is that the form (or button) will appear even if someone stops the video, etc. Not a major problem, but it might increase conversions (which is our goal) to have it "pause" when the video pauses.

I agree with you this can be handled with Flowplayer cue points. I think I can put together another tutorial showing "regular people" how to use FP cue points. It will have a few more steps, but as long as they load the player and paste the code in properly it should be something most people can handle, don't you think?

It will probably be a week before I have time to get that done, but as you said, Flowplayer is a nice, free, open-source solution that many people could put to work with the right guidance.

I was wondering that myself. It would be much better if the time was linked to the play of the video - not how long the visitor is on the page. Looking forward to your Mark 11 version. But I'm sending this to my list now.

  • I made the quick change.

There is another variable here--how many seconds you want the button to stay ON after it appears.

    Otherwise...

If you want your button set to appear at 100 seconds, you would change the line in the code to:

    secondsdelay = 100;

If you then wanted it to hang around for 120 seconds, you would change the second
    variable to:

    secondson = 120;

just paste in the rest of the codes as described in the video and it should work fine.

    Guys,

Last night I bought a copy of iWork 09 for Mac, and a copy of ScreenFlow (also for mac).

I made a Keynote presentation (like Powerpoint, but really easy) and I recorded a cool opt-in video.

I used the magic button code so my Aweber form appears right around the time that I'm talking about the opt-in.

it all works VERY nicely and is pretty cool. I'm dying to divert some PPC traffic to this thing but I need to tweak the layout a bit more and re-encode the video at a better bitrate first.

So awesome though ... it looks very slick. I have the video on autoplay also.

The problem of course with a 'timed' display is that the button is not displayed at the correct time if you pause the video.

Solution: Flash can call Javascript functions.
The correct/ideal way of displaying the button at the correct time is to have flash call the javascript 'display button' function after X minutes in the timeline has been viewed.

Josh Anderson has a tool that lets you do this kind of thing easily.. I think it's called total web video or something like that.

When the flass video reaches a certain point-in-time it will invoke your javascript function which will then display the order button.

    Sean

Edit: Just watched Jay's video.. You could use the FlowPayer (free) as Jay suggests to achieve this.

Edit: Just watched Jay's video.. You could use the FlowPayer (free) as Jay suggests to achieve this.

I've looked at flowplayer and am going to do a tutorial on how to load/configure your vids using it. I am thinking it will need to be a little multi-step because there are "lots of moving parts."

Still most everything you do with Flowplayer is copy and paste-able. Otherwise...if you know what to change then it's pretty easy to configure.

JW Player and Flowplayer can both trigger events, although I've only done it with Flowplayer. Go to their site and look up cue events.

Delayed add to cart buttons will be a standard function of the new JV Press theme by fellow Warrior Sean McAlister. He made it so easy that you will only have to check a box and enter the desired delay time.

I just wanted to add a little tip to this old thread. I used this on a sales page and it leaves a blank space before the button is displayed. To remove this blank area I changed the css to this:

      .hidden { visibility: hidden; display:none; }
      .unhidden { visibility: visible; display:block; }

It works in IE and Firefox but didn't check other browsers.

Did anyone find out how to sync this with the video for flowplayer or jw player.

Thanks for sharing Kevin, very handy little code

    I have one question.

I've implemented this in Wordpress, and it seems to work fine. However, in wp there's just a head for the entire website (part of the 'theme'), not for each page - and we would like to use this on different pages in different ways/with different delay times...is there an elegant way to do that?

    Would much appreciate any thoughts...

    Cheers
