Site flipping - starter

Do I need to learn professional web development or SEO techniques to succeed in site flipping? Can I do this business with only shallow knowledge about web programming and SEO? If so, what is the first step?

You can outsource or you can learn to build sites. You need to know how to build sites, how to transfer sites to a new host, SEO if you want to sell sites with traffic, etc. There's a host of things you need to know in order to flip sites successfully, unless you outsource it all.

Well, many of the sites on Flippa actually look like monkeys have created them, but if you believe this post, you won't be very successful.

People are not looking for run of the mill, bland, poorly designed sites with no traffic and no revenue. Be careful of advice from misinformed monkeys.

You might not need to know how to do everything to be an effective flipper, but you better understand the process if you want to be successful. Web design, on page SEO, off page SEO, and monetization methods are all things you need to understand.

All I can say to the monkey comment is WOW! ...And where did that come from? Remember the one skit on Seinfeld when George Costanza says, "When my blood pressure gets too high, the man on the tape tells me to say: "SERENITY NOW, Serenity NOW!" Sounds like callumcoutts may need start saying, "Serenity Now!"

I agree. The sites that I have sold and the sites that seem to move fast are not some "slap them up quickly" sites. Those are the ones that do not move ... try it and see for yourself.

Definitely agree with this. After all, the process has so much holes in it. It shows that the process was taken from an ebook and not from his own experience. Anyone who is on the site flipping business knows that creating a low quality site and quickly flipping is not as easy.

        Anyway, to the OP...

You have two ways of dealing with the situation. You can either learn how to install a site, create content, SEO a site, make some revenue, create a good copy, sell a site and transfer the site to the new owner

        OR

        Outsource everything.

I am giving you the option to learn because once you gain a skill in this world, it will be to your benefit.

        Regards,

        Aira

At least understand how it works. If you have the time and if you find yourself enjoying it then you can always learn some more and start flipping sites. If not, then outsource it.

There are basically 2 ways to make money flipping sites.

#1 - Is to buy an existing site and make improvements to the site and then re-sell it for a higher cost. the improvements usually involve increasing traffic to the site and/or monetizing the site.

#2 - Is to create a site from scratch, build traffic (and hopefully income) and then sell it. If the site has no traffic & no income, there is a limit as to what the site will sell for - typically around $100.

There are plenty of resources available if you look around. I recommend a site called etycoon.net if you are serious about getting into site flipping.

      Good luck

Well, for starters you can outsource for the mean time but it will be best to learn in the process and do it on your own or maybe work side-by-side the person you hire. Definitely basic SEO knowledge would help.

"Flipping" as it is usually referred to here is really more "Product Creation" then "Sale". What I mean is that it's become more of a "Build a site specifically to sell" rather than a true "Flip".

A real flip generally implies more of a "change of ownership". Someone creates or buys a website, creates or improves it's value, usually by way of increasing revenue and/or traffic, then 'flipping' it for a profit.

I'm not denigrating the more common "Flip" model, but there is a point here:

Buyers are generally looking for investments that they can get a good return on. That requires two things - first, they want a property that will be generating revenue, and second, they want to see a cost-to-return high enough that they are making money on their money.

In other words, the a true 'flip' would involve a site that is generating revenues.

If you focus on building or renovating sites to where they are reliably generating revenues, you will be able to 'flip' them successfully.

And for that, the most important skills are good business sense, and enough IM knowledge to make a site generate revenues.

I think Marhelper hit the proverbial nail in the head.

Just outsource whatever you're not capable of doing, and outsource the rest too

Save up on time, and that'll help you flip multiple blogs/sites at once, as opposed to one blog a week or so

read about site arbitrage. You buy a site from somewhere else for cheap and sell it for more.
