What's the Easiest Way to Find out my IP Address?

Hi all,

I am getting stuck into learning google analytics inside out at the moment and I need to find out my specific IP Address to exclude it when I am looking at my analytics results.

In the past I have gone to sites like: What Is My IP Address? Lookup IP, Hide IP, Change IP, Trace IP and more..., My IP address? Free IP Address tracer and IP address lookup,

or

IP Donuts | Find your ip address...

All the above show me as having the same IP address.

but for a change I decided to try to use my command prompt and type in IPconfig, and it gave me a totally different IP address.

I am not very technical and am confused as to which one is my real address.

Some background:

I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop + one printer who all access the Internet through the same wireless router.

I also think my host does something dynamically (not sure exactly what) whenever I connect to the Internet, I am not sure if that changes my IP address.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

That brought back the same address, but as you say the sites I mentioned should be giving me the right address. I will check my analytic stats to see if I see my IP address in there to double confirm.

      Thanks.

You are right, it is something similar to that. Great I have learned something new today.

Thank you both for your help.

joecool, seeing as you are behind a nat router you will have to logon to its interface in order to find out the external IP. (in most cases, it will have a web interface so just enter the address in your browser).

        You should see, in most cases, the routers ip address when you do ipconfig, it will be listed as the default gateway. Of course, where to find it depends on your router - after logging on and looking around it may be quicker to actually use something like the following, which will be default show you your external facing IP;

My IP Address Lookup and GeoTargeting - Community Geotarget IP Project - domain to IP lookup, what country, city IP addresses map to - IP Trace

Those websites are probably giving you the CORRECT IP addr that the public internet knows you as.

Your router creates it's own little private network. I bet when you type ipconfig on your machine you see something simialr to this one 198.192.0.1 - that address falls in a range of addresses that are for internal networks.

So both are correct! How can that be? Well the PUBLIC one (from the websites) is what the rest of the worl knows you as. The one from ipconfig is what you are known inside your little provate network.

Hope that answers it - haven't had enough coffeee this AM

If you are using a PC with windows this will work.

From the START menu choose the RUN command
Type CMD in the box and hit ok
You will get a DOS prompt
On the prompt line type IPCONFIG
    Hit Enter
Your IP address will show a few lines below.

When I am coding and need to exclude myself, I just use:

    $ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];

Then I show myself the output on the IP, then copy-and-paste it to an If statement to make sure the loading IP is not mine...

************BAD************ IDEA! The IP address is RARELY consistant! HECK, if it WERE, you would probably already know it because you PAID for it! If you asked the MOD here, and your system rebooted, etc... when you got the response, it would probably be WRONG!

Most private routers use non routable IP addresses, so the IPCONFIG IP IS the right IP address, and can be used by other systems on that side of the router, but it is not an IP address the internet can send info to.

FWIW, they are BOTH valid IP addresses.

When you go to a site like the ones you mention above, it shows the IP address of your Internet connection (your firewall, Cable or DSL Modem, or your dial-up modem).

IPCONFIG when run from a command prompt will show your computer's IP address. Run that on each of your computers, and each will have a different IP address, usually fairly sequential in nature.

    e.g. - Computer 1 - 192.168.1.1
    Computer 2 - 192.168.1.2
    Computer 3 - 192.168.1.3
(your numbers may vary, these are just a sample)

If you visit an IP locator web site like you list above from each of those three computers, they will all show the same result. That's because they are all sharing that one Internet connection.

    Hope that helps.

Do any of you guys or gals how or if it is possible to surf without your IP address being displayed. Some days it bothers me that my location is readily available.
I have always believed privacy or the ability to go stealth should be an option.

There will always be SOME IP address available to the web sites you visit for example.

However, if you don't want it to be your Internet connection's IP address, you can use what's called a proxy server.

You connect to a server across the Internet and they take your requests/actions and do them for you. Their IP address gets recorded at the web site you "visit".

Some proxy servers are more reliable than others and some are full of bad things security-wise. I'm sorry I don't have a good list for you, but perhaps other Warriors could list their favs if you posted a new thread?

You may find some existing threads if you search the forum for proxy server. I have to run in a moment so I can't do it for you right now.

I think it's a good thing that IP addresses are visible by default. Imagine the amount of abuse if this was not the case.

btw an IP address doesn't really give away anything personal about you except your ISP. What are you concerned about?
I'm not concerned about anything particular it is just my experience it doesn't hurt to know what is available...in case. The in case may be like for instance employers firing people for facebook stuff. While that may not be a good,"for instance" it is similar to why I asked.

So internal IP address (for network) and another IP address (from website) is different, then which ip address goes to record when we register at particular site?
