What's your best dollar per hour activity?

by Big Al
57 replies
Not too long ago I used to work in the mortgage industry ... and we used to talk about the best activities to follow up on in terms of pound per hour.

I guess it's just another way to say 'return on your time'.

And it was always insurance - never the mortgage. It was the back-end product because by that time you'd already spent a few hours building a relationship of sorts with the client, the hard work was done and the insurance (which could easily pay more than the mortgage commission) could be done relatively quickly.

What would you say is the best pound (or dollar) per hour activity for you?!

My gut feeling is that it'll be email marketing ....

Would like to hear opinions or anything random.

Thanks

Al

even though i hate it, it's article writing.

If i outsource them i can't get the quality that i need (including all of the little copy aspects i put in) without jacking up the price.

But behind some good keyword research, it generates some huge amounts of leads for me.

Yeah, I have to agree with that. Well, it's the only thing that has made me money so I'm not much of an expert! But I recently calculated out that each article makes me about $100. So that's pretty good -- maybe it will help me get motivated to write some more!

I gotta go with pig farmer boy up there (MichaelHiles - he's a pig farmer you know)...

Product creation. Make it once, it earns for maybe a lifetime.

I'd say my Adsense sites are right up there too, although they do have a shelf life sometimes. Add in the income from flipping those bad boys and it's a nice bread winner, though.

Once you've had organic, home stuffed, home smoked sausage, you'll gag at that nasty industrial corn-fed garbage.

I've got a 400 pound sow that's been bred out that I am going to send to pig heaven in the next few weeks.

Mmmm tongue meat... and souse.... pork cracklins...

I might do a WSO on how to butcher your own hog, and include a bonus on how to properly cut the throat to bleed her out and capture all the blood for some tasty blood sausage (spiced scab stuffed in an intestine).

That's just nasty. I remember trying blood sausage as a kid, but the sales pitch was better. More along the lines of "juicy part of the meat."

        Automation.

Any time I can spend a few hours automating something that would take even just a few minutes each time I need it done, so long as it needs to get done on a regular basis, that is by far the best and most profitable use of my time. I think it is even better than outsourcing, which would come in a close second, only because I have to pay for each hour of outsourced time. The leverage is great, but it still isn't quite as profitable.

Ahh well... if I did, there wouldn't be much that I could do about it except become some tasty bacon for some other farmer somewhere. And then I get to move back up to something more enlightened like a ocelot or a spider monkey. Spider monkeys are cool.

Product Creation hands down with article writing a distant second.

In fact, I've just calculated that for every 1 hour I spend on product creation
that is usually good for about $400 in income.

I don't know about you but I'll take $400 an hour any day of the week.

Hate to sound all nerdy and nitpicky here...

Over what time period are you calculating that?

Let's say you spend 30 hours on product creation - does that bring you back $12k over a 1 year period? 2 years? 1 month? 2 days(!)?

$400/hour is great no matter how you slice it, just wondering how you're slicing.

Lol if that's the case then my most productive moments are the moment I hand them the pen to sign the contract.

So $5500 for a contract... 30 seconds to sign. Let's extrapolate that.

          $5500 x 30 seconds x 2 = per minute rate = $11 000

          $11 000 x 60 minutes = hourly rate = $66 000

          So ... I guess signing contracts. I make $66 000 an hour

Nice... I may start basing my rates around those numbers. Heck, even charging just a portion of that - say $20,000 per hour - and I'd be doing pretty good

Things you can use for multiple purposes gives you the best value for your time.

For instance an article you can submit to article directories, put on your blog, use as a chapter in a viral report or ebook and...

But in general I suggest you balance your work to all important areas. It doesn't matter how much traffic you have if you have no good offer and vice versa.

Andy, I couldn't say it better. Without good relationship (where you give more than receive) with your list and partners you aren't able to doing long term profitable business.

If you build proper relationship then you can to

      - know what is their unsolved problem (if you know that you can to serve them better)
      - get ideas for product creation (what will match with their want)
      - get right tips in pricing, marketing, etc... (reaching balance between affordability and profitability)

But, I think the more important element is developing their trust in you. The others are coming from that. And I think you make this well if you know who are you, from where you come, a what kind of real value you give to others.

      Have a nice weekend,

      Sandor

For me lately it's been outsourcing systems hands down. Figuring out what are the lower value, repeatable tasks and what are the higher value more cirtical tasks. Creating a process map of who does what, complete with training videos, checklists, project management portal communication and getting it tweaked and working.

Then I move on to the next area of my business and break it down in a similiar fashion. This is really helping to leverage my skills, time and resources. I found when trying to do it all myself it just doesn't all get done. So why not play to your strengths?

I love internet marketing, but I found out that I make about $800/hour closing deals over the phone.

I can literally pick up the phone at anytime and close a thousand dollar deal. But sometimes I just don't feel comfortable "selling" not because I'm not good at it but because I "thought" the owner shouldn't be doing the selling.

I guess since I used this skill to become rep of the year for AOL Time Warner 10 years ago, I felt this it's kinda like doing a job.

For me, product creation. Every sale increases the amount I made per hour in creating it. I've got a couple of products that are about 9 or 10 years old. Even including the time spent to keep them updated, you wouldn't believe how much those two products have earned me when broken down into a per hour rate.
