Someone Called and Offered Me 5-Figures for My Domain...

I just got a call from a guy this morning offering 5-figures for a domain I own. Even though I get a lot of these calls, this was from a "broker".

Any advice from people who have done this...?

Thanks...

If you're considering selling be sure to do the deal with a reputable 'domain escrow' service.

As stated above previously please use a domain escrow service and make sure all proper funds reach your account before you do the transfer.

If they are serious, as previously stated, use a reputable escrow service such as: Domain Escrow Services - moniker.com

They are one of the best and make it a simple transaction.

There is also Escrow.com, Sedo.com, and Afternic.com, but IMHO Moniker is better.

Always, always use an escrow service. but do your own DD on how much the domain is actually worth.

First you need to make sure this "broker" is reputable, and not just trying to sell you an "appraisal". Make sure you get his full name, company, phone number etc. and research him. As others have said, use an escrow service you KNOW is reputable. I highly recommend escrow.com.

Well, I called him and asked him to email me the details. He asked me why. Hmmmmm.

So, after explaining that it's hard to sink my teeth into anything that is just a voice on the phone, he's going to email me.

I have a feeling that this is just a buddy doing a deal for his friend. It could be serious and I'd hate to have it go south. But this last call to him was so odd.

You would think that if it was a broker he'd jump at the chance to send me a proposal, right?

    Bryan,

If that is a good price for you to settle on, then why not? Dose it matter if he/she is a broker or not?

As long as whoever it is comes up with the money, and you use a long-standing reputable payment method like www.Escrow.com to help keep things on the up and up so you don't get screwed, that shouldn't matter. To me, it's the end result that matters, and that's usually cash in hand.

Hmm ... I thought they already sent you a proposal of 5 figures when they first contacted you.

No, I got a telephone call this morning. He mentioned a number. No other details. Very odd.

If he tells you to have the domain appraised by some appraisal company first then it's probably a scam, if not, use an escrow then you should be safe.

      Hi Bryan,
If someone called me out of the blue offering
a five figure sum for one of my domains it would
definitely start the alarm bells ringing. You stated
that you thought it was odd - you're probably
      correct in that assumption.
I would advise you to proceed with caution.

      Kind regards,

      Mark.

If he's from Florida - run away real fast. All the con-artists seem to get tax breaks or something if they set up shop in FLA.

Seriously - if they want you to pay for anything like an appraisal first - or they ask you what other sites you might have for sale - then it's a scam for sure.

Thanks, everyone. I am proceeding with caution. I truly appreciate everyone's help.

I've had the domain for 14 years. It's a Google Rank of 4 and I love the site. Can't get attached to these things, I suppose.

If I end up $20K richer, I'll let ya know!

    Thanks...

I won't be too happy until he or she has paid and the transaction is closed. To be on the safer side, I will suggest you ask them to pay by escrow.com or do moneygram/western union.

Don't take payment via paypal or checks for this type or transaction except of course you want to get scammed.

Thanks. I'll do an escrow if this is legit. Oh, yes, they are from Florida, too. Yikes!

I think he is trying saying Florida is not too far from Pennsylvania. I may be wrong though.

if you feel ok with it then go for it. Also, as someone said above, if you use moniker.com then little/nothing can go wrong really.

If you like the price, then move to request for full payment before releasing anything. Do not deal directly by forwarding your payment details. Even if he or she sounds good, nice, sexy, trustworthy...etc do not buy the hype.

The commission you pay to a broker will be money well spent. Be careful and distrust all promises, until proven otherwise. Usually brokers fees are split 50/50.

The ONLY way to do these kinds of deals is through an escrow service. We did a $150,000 domain deal through escrow.com, and everything went smooth. Just make sure you use a reputable service, and you're good to go.

Well, it's a good niche. A Google rating of 4. LOTS of traffic. Very "old" domain.

I think they just want the domain, not the content, though.

It would be great to know how this deal went.
If it's legit, then the best way is to do this would be through a reputable Escrow service.
But I sure smell a rat. I have this gut feeling that this is a scam.

An interested investor is always very enthusiastic to discuss detail fast. A broker would be over the moon over this kind of deal. It's very odd that the broker is acting so restrained. He is probably sizing up his prey.

Never accept the first offer, ask for slightly more ...

But if he seems legit draft a contract, let him sign it and sell your domain if you are happy withit.

Any questions just let me know
