Just host just suspended my hosting

hey guys,

just received an email from justhost stating that my sites have been using up excessive system resources and that my account has been suspended and i cant understand this. I have no special scripts installed except the article marketing automation plugin on 1 blog and the sites on this account didnt have alot of traffic. The email also sent me a link stating I must upgrade to a dedicated server for $149 per month.

This makes no sense to me, i contacted live support and they state they cant deal with it and that a senior member of staff must be contacted.

I have about 8 sites on this account that are down now.

I dont know much about servers and cpanel etc but how can i recover my sites guys?

Has this happended to any of you before?

Thanks

Alan

I never heard of them, I have always used Host Gator. You might want to check them out.

Its never happened to me personally, however I have heard it has happened to many before - sadly many of them have also hosted with justhost. Also there will be a clause written into your contract with them as I assume you have a shared hosting account? Where they can shut you down if you are using resources at a detriment to other users. I would advise you to transfer everything to hostgator or godaddy - never had any problems with them. p.s. don't buy that dedicated server option there is no way you are using enough resources to go down that road!

Godaddy? One of the worst hosts out there, in my opinion. But everyone has different opinions. Hostgator is good, but Hostmonster has the same cpanel and even more features and more generous pricing and perks, so I was go with them.

Is there anyway to PREVENT future customers or webmasters from using GODADDY for good? I pity those people who got scummed by this web hosting company

This happened to me and I host with Hostgator, I had to upgrade to a dedicated but I do have more sites than you...

It was a right pain and my sites were down for about a week and I lost a lot of revenue because of it!

I think, if you are on shared hosting, most host will do this to you if you are using too much resources.

I've never hosted with Justhost, but I should imagine that your sites are still on the server and they will probably transfer these for you when you upgrade or move host.

You could head on over to webhostingtalk.com and check out the discussions on which host to choose. I'm sure you'll find something there.

Its never happened to me before but you dont actually mention what server you are on i would say its a vps but i could be wrong on that one, without further details it hard really to come to a verdict on who was right or wrong. As you dont have access to the server you cannot transfer it to another more reliable hosting company i use wholesaleinternet.net i have 3 dedicated servers with them and they are 100% reliable as i see it its my business and i cannot have unreliable servers or hosting people as down time = loss of revenue which is not good news.

My opinion would be you have 2 options either upgrade with them as i feel you have no choice they wont allow you to carry on with the current server spec or move to another more reliable hosting company.

Hope you get it sorted out quickly.

As for getting you sites back while it is suspended won't be possible. I think the culprit is the website with "article marketing automation plugin"

Ask them which account is the culprit and then tell them you will disable that plugin. When they have done that you need to decide to move your sites or not.

However you will have this problem on any shared hosting host including hostgator. If it is really a issue you might have to go for a VPS which is +- $30-$50. I see jaquarpc is having special at the moment.

Another route to follow is getting a reseller account. I have used a number of hosting companies in my time and I suggest scalahosting. They have a 10gb reseller account for $6.95 a month. They always have a special for $1 for the first month

With a reseller account the domain are all on a separate accounts but you have control over each account.

I was with them for nearly 2 years until I switched to a VPS as I needed root access. They also won't suspend you account for no reason and if they do will only disable the website causing the problem and let you know to correct the problem and they will even help.

If you can't handle the WHM on the reseller account then you must stick to places like hostgator/justhost that oversell and will lock you down as soon as you website gets traffic.

You're much better off going with a reliable hosting service such as hostgator or hostmonster (NEVER Godaddy).

It can still happen if your sites are using too many resources though. I had a site that was using too many resources on Hostgator, and they sent me a polite email saying I had to do something about it. I did and that was the end of the problem.

Before signing up with Bluehost, I asked what happens if my CPU usage goes too high. They said My sites are re-routed for a few seconds thru a second server until the job using the CPU resources is done and switched back. That I would still have zero downtime and never be suspended as a matter of policy.
They were the only host I could find (besides Powweb) that wouldn't suspend an account that spiked the CPU.
PM Dennis Gaskill for an affiliate link if I were you. ( I have one but don't self promote) it is $6.95 a month when you buy 3 years up front. Unlimited, bandwidth, server space, domains, databases, etc.

(Powweb is 7.77, but has deals for the 1st 2 years all the time, but BH is the same price all the time, even when renewing.)

(Both run your site on 2 servers and use load balancing routers to keep one CPU from spiking. Unless you are monitoring NORAD, it is almost impossible to spike a server at either host.)

But I just helped migrate someone from bluehost because they were using to many resources. Just a fyi

Just get yourself a quality VPS from someplace like liquidweb and most of your hosting problems go away forever. $60 bucks a month is not an unreasonable sum when you consider the headaches you are going through now.

I always keep my registrar and host separate, so if my host pulls a stunt, I can forward my domains to a different server and my hoster cannot hold everything hostage.

thanks for your replies guys, i emailed customer support back and they gave me the URL of the blog that was causing the problem. It was indeed the blog using the AMA plugin. The thing is that i only had it set to make 1 post per day. Surely this shouldnt use too many system resources? If i owned a huge network of autoblogs it would make sense, but not for 1 blog.

Anyway the customer rep emailed me and said I must ring him to unsuspend my account, I rang the number he provided 5 minutes later and nobody answered. Then he emailed me back and said me sites were back up.

I have decided to move to bluehost

Funny, I'm in the process of switching over to HostMonster after a year with JustHost... I like HM better already. JustHost severely does the nickel-and-dime thing... they promise so much but suck in the end.

Switch over like everyone else said

Thanks for the heads-up on JustHost. Their mistake in suspending your account without giving you a chance to correct the problem first just cost them a customer. They were on my short list for potential new hosts for some new sites I'll be bringing online within a month or so.

This incident also shows why I'm moving away from WordPress for most of my niche sites. Unfortunately, it's a resource hog and, when you add in certain plugins, like the AMA plugin or Google Sitemap plugin, the odds are that you're going to spike a processor on the server at some point.

Happened to me at Nevergreen a few months back -- suddenly found all my sites suspended without warning because I had exceeded my "unlimited" allowance, with a message urging me to upgrade to a more expensive option.

I tore them a new one via email (if that's even possible), for whatever it was worth. I understand there's really no such thing as "unlimited" hosting, but I think a warning was in order before they shut me down completely.

To make it worse, they told me there's no simple way to monitor my resources so I can avoid having this happen again. That just makes it more ridiculous.

I like Ed's idea of upgrading to VPS. Going with cheap hosting is penny-wise and pound-foolish if you're trying to run a business.

So Just Host suspended your account for using too much resources yet on their website they claim "unlimited" bandwidth. Say what? You can have unlimited bandwidth unless you use too much bandwidth.

Wise move moving away from JustHost. I usually don't trust hosts that offer "unlimited" bandwidth and disk space.

You need to get out more.

Good quality hosts post the limits on bandwidth and disk space up front where you can see it.

              Floyd,

I'm going to assume you're joking. I went to that site and I think I counted 12 out of the 15 ads on the home page have the word "unlimited" in them.

I clicked on some of the directory pages and saw essentially the same thing -- about 80% of the hosts said they offered "unlimited" something.

I only glanced at a few of the pages on the site, so this is far from scientific, but I didn't see a single one that said up front what their limits were. Maybe they say so on their home pages, I didn't check, but not in their advertising, apparently.

So what? Well we can't all be as smart as you. CPU utilization on the server give me a break. Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk space, that's what most folks see and understand. What do most people know about CPU utilization? Nothing. And they don't mention it anywhere on their website (visible--I'm sure it's buried in their terms somewhere). They advertise unlimited bandwidth because most people will think that means unlimited resources which it is not.

Trouble is, pretty much all of them do -- even Hostgator.
I noticed that Ken. When I first signed up with Host Gator they didn't advertise it as unlimited. That being said I haven't had any issues with Host Gators.

It is really a poor business decision to shut down like that without a warning. It is false advertising since you need high CPU utilization to accommodate "unlimited" bandwidth. The company should be able to distribute the CPU loads across their servers and send warning reports to the offending site owners.

    Alan,

No host is going to advertise that, why because it would put them at a disadvantage to the other 99.9% of the hosts that have the same policy that do not advertise it.

BTW, thanks for the sarcastic comment. I wasn't posting to be smart just posting clarification since the screen shots were not relevant.

This happened to me with a company called Lonex. I only had one site on that account. I did everything that support told me to do, and the site still was problematic for them. I moved it to my bloated GoDaddy account--no problems at all.

I use a total of seven hosts & Lonex is the only one that ever did this to me.

Pattaya-Addict, if you have any social media profiles, I'd take my complaints fully public there. Tweet about them to warn others, for example.

I had a GoDaddy issue one Saturday night; asked my Twitter followers for advice using "GoDaddy" in the message; received real-time assistance from the @GoDaddy twitter account person. Problem solved. Not sure why so many dislike them.

The main reason why I dislike them is because of their too many "HIDDEN upsells". Their offers will be so confusing till you'll end up buying two hosting accounts when you only need one.

The second reason is for hiding the transaction details. They said it's $XX for a particular service, then when you check the receipt, the price charged will be more than that. Only after checking with their customer support you'll realize that they've charged your card for a service without you asking for it...

I agree on the hidden upsells part but I haven't seen them do the hidden transaction details thing. It seems like they would get in legal hot water over that. They can be tricky though so you may click on an upsell that you don't want or need.

As for their hosting service, it is actually quite reliable in my experience and their support is good but they got some serious quirks on top of the upsell interface. Many scripts and WordPress plugins simply won't run there. I mainly use them to host smaller mini-sites that are either static HTML or very simple PHP. I host sites that require better features or complex scripting elsewhere.

For some reason Hostgator's TOS and JustHost's Terms and Conditions on Resource Usage seem pretty similar (actually I think it's exactly the same, word for word, except for HostGator's misspelling of the word "than") until you reach that bit in JustHost's Terms where they reserve the right to take you down for using more than 10% of server resources.

After the resource usage section for both of them, you'll also find a section on Inodes. Apparently, "Every file (a webpage, image file, email, etc) on your account uses up 1 inode." HostGator allows up to 250,000 of these things before they will warn you to take action, but stops data backups after you exceed 100,000 (excluding databases). JustHost allows 50,000 before you're in danger of suspension and also stops data backups.

          User may not:
          a) Use 25% or more of system resources for longer then 90 seconds. There are numerous activities that could cause such problems; these include: CGI scripts, FTP, PHP, HTTP, etc.
          b) Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, such as IRCD.
          c) Run any type of web spider or indexer (including Google Cash / AdSpy) on shared servers.
          d) Run any software that interfaces with an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) network.

          g) Run any gaming servers such as counter-strike, half-life, battlefield1942, etc
          h) Run cron entries with intervals of less than 15 minutes.

          a) When using PHP include functions for including a local file, include the local file rather than the URL. Instead of include("http://yourdomain.com/include.php") use include("include.php")
          b) To help reduce usage, do not force html to handle server-side code (like php and shtml).

What you have done is generate a lot of traffic, and that is why you got shut down. Seriously, you did nothing wrong, but you did do something right.

Now, on getting your sites back. Forget getting them back up on justhost, it's obvious they can't handle the traffic you're generating anymore.

Call their support, get full backups of the sites, and head over to Voxtreme, and buy a reseller account there. The reason is simple, Vox is big enough to handle what you need, and they don't have a lot of restrictions on what you can do. If need be, I can do all that for you, and am a PM away.

Get it set up, then goto hostindex.com and look on there to do some comparison shopping. If you find you can't beat Voxtreme, then stay there. But if you can, by all means go for it.

I had the same thing happen to me with JustHost. It was odd because I had 13 sites up with them and decided to tear them down and rebuild them. After I had six sites back up they emailed me with the same message, that I was using excessive resources and my account had been suspended.

Like you, they wanted me to upgrade from the $49/year plan to the $149/month plan. There was no prior warning, no opportunity to do one more backup, nothing.

When I joined with them there was no mention of their resources limit being so small - just 40% of the HostGator limit.

I also use HostGator and LunarPages as well as two other hosts I'm testing at the moment and I've never had any problems with any of them.

I have several blogs with HostGator with the number of posts ranging from over 5,000 to one with 16,000. Most of them have WPRobot or Caffeinated Content on them. I have a few close to that with LunarPages as well and no suggestion that anything is wrong.

There's a section on the HostGator cpanel that tells you how much of their resources you're using - no such thing with JustHost. How can you guess about that?

I used to be a WPMager and I know from their forum that Justhost has pulled this shady trick with a tremendous number of them. To be honest, I suspect they'll do it to almost everyone with multiple blogs if you stick around with them long enough.

It really makes me believe the worst about them. There are some scary stories on the web about them, too.

They also own SuperGreen Hosting, by the way, so that's another one to avoid.

    I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole.

Oh wait ... they're in England. OK then, I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

  • Dont trust them they are fake. they do that to lots of people. Just because they have many customers they think they can hurt people. They are frauds and they have horrible customer services. Host Gator is the best.

This thread has come at a good time for me - I am also having issues with JustHost. No suspension (yet) but they messed up a transfer of sites of mine, and I have lost income. More than two weeks of back and forth with their Customer Support, and no action. I did not like Hostgator when I was with them though. Their Customer Support was not helpful, and downright rude, which was why I transferred after a year. Just want a decent host who will do things like backup and transfer for you if you are a non-tech (like me). Should be part of the service, shouldn't it? Anyone suggest a provider that helps out like that without charging extra?

That is Justwrong..lol. a pretty smart strategy listed above is to keep hosting and domain reg separate. I also do not host all my sites on one host. This allows me to restore back-ups and point nameservers to another host fairly quickly if needed. I have had no issues to date with sites at Hostgator, hostmonster, fatcow and blue.

I had the same type of experience with HostGator just a few weeks ago, HOWEVER, HostGator handled it in a much better (and customer service friendly manner).

Since we are running the latest Lab Workshop in a forum hosted on my server, I ran into trouble a week into the Workshop with too many calls to the database. Since, I already have about 40-50 sites on my reseller account, it seems I overstepped the allotted resources for a reseller account.

Instead of summarily shutting down all my sites, HostGator disabled one of the offending actions in my forum. Then, they immediately informed me. I got on the phone with one of their techs, we did a quick database repair, and the administrator at HG got me back online (all within about 15 minutes).

Then, we moved the whole mass of domains and attendant files to a dedicated server. Although it was a little nerve-wracking at the time, it was all rather painless.

I give a VERY BIG THUMBS UP to HostGator.

      ====

On a side note, I also have many domains on Host4Profit (Allen Says' hosting company) and David Hasbrouck has always provided me with stellar service. Especially, helped out when I got hacked through my FTP last year. Another BIG THUMBS UP

I had a similar problem with hostgator but they left me access to my cpanel and wp dashboard while I sorted it out. When I checked the error logs it looked to be some sort of robot hitting on the same page trying to extract the content over and over that caused the exploit. Hostgator put the site back online after I got back to them and advised me to use the WP super cache plug in which helps when you get heavy traffic.

It is a reseller account and it didn't affect any of my other sites. I asked them if they thought that I should upgrade to a dedicated server and was told no need for now as long as I use that plug in. As I expect to have to upgrade at some point and was prepared to pay the difference I think that was a pretty good response.

I have been using justhost for more than 2 years. I use dedicated IP option and I never faced any problem with their service. I also have some of my sites on Godaddy and I'd say Godaddy sucks. Bluehost is good too, but many times it does not allow me to use the cpanel if I use certain ISPs - they are very strict.

It may be that there was some DDOS attack on some of your websites. You need to find out first what triggered the problem.

This could be what happened too. It's why website owners always need to protect themselves first. If running a blog have a good back up system in place like (just a suggestion) WordPress Database Backup

And for reporting (even just for traffic purposes) statcounter.com

And as for them closing your account down then making you wait until a senior management person arrives from a long weekend. That's nothing but extremely bad customer service. As soon as they arrived and told you the reasoning behind all this. And if they didn't compensate you for your time lost due to this. I'd backup everything and move. (this is what 90% of leaving customers do, they don't give a reason they just up and move.)

But do your own research, don't let others sway you. Really its whatever works for you and you alone, only you know your individual needs. People can say Company X sucks all day long. But if it works for them, More power to them.. To each their own..

While this is true, unless they have a page saying DDOS ME I DARE YOU the web host, and their upstream provider should mitigate this issue.
CPU usage by itself is usually not DDoS unless the attacker knows of a specific flaw in the software.

I am going through similar dramas with Justhost (not a suspension, but they have messed up a transfer of sites which has left them non-functional), and am definitely ready to get myself a new hosting company. Because I don't have sufficient experience to do backups/restores/transfers my-newbie-self, I am willing to pay a fellow warrior who is able to rescue my account.
Is someone willing to help me, please? PM me.
    Thanks,

If it says unlimited disk or network run away fast. There isn't a single hosting provider that sells "unlimited" disk or network that won't shut you down when you exceed a internally documented soft threshold. Hosting pro's congregate on Webhostingtalk. Thats where this question is better answered.

That's good news! I currently have five autoblogs on a shared hosting plan at Hostgator. In the next month or so, I will be switching to a VPS at Hostgator - that way I don't have to worry about getting suspended.

Yeah, that's really awful. Hosting companies usually give some kind of warning or notice. If I were you, I would move your site to other hosting companies. Hostgator is a pretty good one.

Try to stop using your automated plug in, then send a ticket to JH that if you stop the plug in that causing a problem, you can have your site back online, it usually they will open your account again.

This happened to one of my customers recently and he is hosted with Hostgator and his site was also using an automated content plugin.

He got is sorted fairly quickly and I believe it was Hostgator who told him to install this plugin onto his site WordPress › WP Super Cache WordPress Plugins and that apparently fixes the problem.

    Hello,

    Ya that happens, it sucks!

Godday, Hostgator, and 1&1 not for me any more.

My friend still uses goddady hosting for his lawn mowing service, he never had any problems at all. Using no scripts and a basic lawn service template seems fine.

I have had great luck with Ebook General Store - web hosting and domain registration no problems at all.

I use host gator and had them suspend one of my sites for cpu useage. ( Cant use more than 25% i believe is the rule ) My problem was an ajax chat integration I was using on my forum. Took me a while to figure it out but was eventually able to change the frequency of queries it was using. Once i explained that to them what i did they unsuspended the site. Funny thing is i have had tons more people in the chat room using it for 3-4 months prior to the day this happened.

A dedicated server solves all those problems... and you can put as many sites as you want on there without having to worry about which site is usuing what percentage of resources.

You can get a decent dedicated server for about $160 a month

    Robert

PS: if someone answers the reason they dont is because $160 a month is to prohibitive MY answer back would be... Well if your not expecting to make more than $160 a month in revenue why did you start in the first place?
