Internet Marketing As A Career...Who Understands??

As most of you may already know, I've been an IMer for about 5 years now. And our lifestyle is different from everyone else's. We spend most of our time online; blogging, writing articles, writing ebooks, promoting CB products etc. I pretty much love what I do and I always will....but here's the problem.

When people see I dont work a typical 9-5 day job, and im always on the computer they dont have a clue what's going on. Nowadays any typical 22 year old you see on a computer is either on myspace or you tube all day. But people are always asking me "Where do you work"? And when I try to explain to them what I do, they either think im stupid because they've never heard of it. and dont think that you could make money online unless your selling something on ebay.

My parents are always telling me I need to go back to school to be a nurse (WHY THE HELL WOULD I WANT TO BE A NURSE?!)
Most people are the typical John and Jane Doe type. Work a day job. Come home, eat dinner, watch tv, sleep and do it all again the next day.

I love what I do. Ever since I was 17 years old. I love making websites and blogging and writing articles. Its my passion and it makes me feel fulfilled and complete. But someone please tell me how do you explain this to people. If you go up to anyone that's not an internet marketer and you talk randomly about the BUM method, PPC, SEO, conversion rates and resell rights, they will look at you like your an alien.

Okay I dont wanna ramble on any longer and bore you guys but someone please tell me how I can explain this to people. Like give them a short...."something" about what I do in a simple sentence so that can be the end of it. Please help

Tell them you run internet porn sites that sell animal porn to senior citizens on DVD, VHS and Beta.

They won't ever ask you again.

    (works for me anyway)

Just tell those who ask you get paid to build websites, which is true. No one has to know they're yours. If someone tries to bring you a client & you don't want that, just say their type of site isn't really your specialty, and refer them to a local designer.

You can also just say you're like a magazine publisher, only you publish on websites instead of in magazines. When they ask how you make money, say the same way as magazines - subscriptions & advertising. That's all they'll usually understand.

That's because that's how we're "socialized" from an early age. Starting with the school system, that's what we get used to doing.

Only for some of us it didn't "take"

I just say I am an internet marketer, then when they ask what do you do exactly I just say I make myself and other people lots of money with my computer and if they disagree and say it's not possible I pull out a wad of cash from my pocket and say want to learn.

You can tell your mom I was a nurse for 10 years and left it for IM. Why would she want you to backtrack. You just have to get over trying to explain it and understand some people don't have the ability to understand anything other than 9-5. You must be pretty open minded to get it. Just your average joe isn't going to. But it is a good thing that the average joe likes to spend money online.:p

Wish I could do that. I still have some hang ups to get over about money, I'm not sure I could bring myself to burn some even if I can afford to.

When I was taking clients (before I realised that it was better to just make money for myself), I would say "I help companies maximise their profits by using the internet to drive sales". This was nice as nearly everyone I met seems to have an idea for a business or making money and gives me an opening to pitch for business.

I guess I'm lucky because I can tell people that I'm a business writer, as writing is the focus of my business. Still though, it can be frustrating when you feel like you have to explain that "no no, I don't write about my lunch on Myspace." My major frustration comes from people in my world who think that because I work from home and make my own schedule that I am magically free all day to run errands and do favors for them.

If you want to keep it vague tell people that you work in sales and marketing from your home office. It's true, it's vague and it still sounds impressive enough for people to go "ohhh...I hear there's good money in that."

Here's a true story of mine.

This repairman of my air-conditioner once came
to my apartment to fix my air con, actually, he
came over a few times, and noticed that I'm always
at home, and never have to go to work.

So one time he finally couldn't hold it to himself
and asked me what I do for a living, I told me
    I do "Internet Business".

He went right away saying: "Oh~~~ those porn sites?!"

    I went: "Nonono~~~"

    That's it.....the conversation was over...

The amount of people that think Internet Businesses
are all just about porn sites really amaze me, no kidding!!

I'm a little new at this too. I owned my own sales and marketing company and sold out to my partner, then started doing this. I get all kinds of questions about my new "job" now. When I tell them what I'm doing they usually don't know what the heck I'm talking about. I find that it's better that way. Let them be perplexed

For a long time my wife pretends she knows what I do on the internet to make money.

I know she never totally understood until...one day she bought an ebook on "teaching kids how to be smarter" after Googling for some info.

I told her I create these sort of sites...and she clicked.

I've been struggling with this one since 2002. My wife and my parents still don't fully grasp what I do. But that's okay. Sometimes I don't either.

I like the term 'Content Publisher' but that gets a lot of blank stares as well. However, I've heard two that I really like in this thread, and I'll be trying them both out in the weeks ahead.

      "Business Publisher"

      and

"Sales and Marketing from my home office"

      Thanks for those!!

I told my future father-in-law once in joking that I dealt drugs for a living. Poor guy had little sense of humor & it backfired on me! I almost had to elope to get married, especially when her mama found out .

This topic has come up many times before. I've concluded that at this point in my life I don't need to impress anybody except my beautiful wife so I don't even bother to try to explain what I do anymore. If they ask, I just tell 'em that I sell stuff on eBay or some such thing.....

I'll just going to register a LLC with money earned online and rent an office out there. Then, go to office online from 9 - 5. If someone asked you what do you do, just answer," I'm the boss of XYZ LLC"

When they ask what does you company do, just answer," my company is doing international business that does all transaction with internet only, receive check from overseas, then cash into bank account" ;-)

P.S. Make sure you plan well before register your LLC.. :-)

Just tell them that you SEO and then FTP your HTML and PHP pages, hoping for a good CTR and ROI. Then you make your income on a 75% commission on various CB products in return.

    That should do it.

    P.S

I used to use things like "I am an independent online marketing consultant" or "I work freelance for various companies as a publisher, and take commissions"

Or, if you've got a solid business, just say that you own your own marketing company online. Simple huh?

"I own several profitable websites" seems to work best. I don't think people need to know the ins and outs. Trying to describle blogging, being an affiliate etc is pointless to those who arn't in the know.

I find people just assume you will make money from advertising on your websites. Depending on your business model they might not be far off the mark.
