Any Local SEO Businessmen?

Are there any SEO business owners that don't necessarily use SEO to promote their own business? I am looking for tips on starting my own local SEO and internet marketing business. I will pretty much be a consultant and outsource my linkbuilding to some WSO's perhaps, but it will be helpful to local businesses who don't know much about the field. Please let me know:

which IM services I should offer?
what a legitimate payment structure would be?
how many clients to take in a particular niche?
any other useful tips

Thank you

There are a lot of IM services that you can offer. What interests you? What are you good at?

I enjoy my passive income streams, but there are a lot of ways to structure payments. It also depends on what you end up offering.

If you're offering SEO, I think the only ethical thing to do is to take on one business type in each geographic area. I know some will disagree with this, but exclusivity is also a great way to charge higher fees and set yourself apart from the competition.

The most useful tip I can provide is to start attending some networking events. Rub elbows with some local business owners and find out what keeps them awake at night. Find out what's important to them... Being successful with selling anything really just boils down to providing solutions to people's problems.

Find a problem... present a solution... make money...

100% positive experience for everyone involved.

    Hi Peter,

Would be a little self defeating for a Local SEO firm not to use Local SEO to promote their own business...in my opinion anyways.
It's convincing when you can show a client exactly what you can do by showing your own site which ranks well for your targeted keywords...

As far as services...if your outsourcing everything...then offer everything.
The job of a good consultant is to listen to the clients issues & concerns, then offer reasonable solutions for them. The trick is to know at least the basics of each so you can talk inteligently...

    Payment structure is:
1.) what you feel your time is worth...
2.) what your local area can bear...
3.) flexible to accomodate various niches...
*search other local competitors & compare thier pricing...

How many clients for a particular niche is soley up to you. Some go after who ever is willing to pay them while others go after a set amount per zipcode or mileage radius...me personally I use the mile radius rule...

Other useful tips? Just search the forum for offline topics & i'm sure you will find tons of great tips...just about every senerio has been discussed here....if not here then in other offline marketing forums like offlinebiz or localbizbuilders or offlinegoldforum (all .com's)....for SEO tips try SEOchat (also a .com)

    Thanks,
    ~Ken

    Hi Peter,
I am trying do this same in NJ, Somerset. I think a lot of local businesses need some help to be present online.
I think first what we need to do is to setup their own domain - related to their business name, setup website and setup email. I see many people with gmail or yahoo email address. I think this is not really good from business point of view and branding your name.

which IM services I should offer?

Start with what you can do yourself and what you can outsource easily.

The key is not what service you offer...that's actually irrelevant.

If you make a local business a substantial profit over what they pay you then they're going to be thrilled and hire you over and over for project after project and/or keep paying your ongoing fees.

Most internet marketing strategies can be applied to local business to make them genuine sales and profits.

So start by thinking through what you can do already and how you might be able to use your existing skills to help local businesses get more sales and profits.

      Simple really.

Beyond that you can outsource to other people if you want to sell other services.

what a legitimate payment structure would be?

Get paid at least 50% upfront before you start any project.

Make sure that if you never get paid another cent you're happy to do the whole project for the upfront fee then you can't lose.

Many people charge ongoing fees for various projects too.

How much you charge is going to depend on multiple factors including how well you establish value, how much the business owner is used to paying for various services and other bills (what size checks he's used to writing), how much you're happy doing the work for (at least double that).

When you're starting out with your first clients the most important thing is to get paid enough in your upfront fee so you're happy doing the work.

In the short term you don't need to worry about much else.

how many clients to take in a particular niche?

If you're working in a small city or town then you're probably not going to provide the same service to a client in the same niche without getting agreement from an existing client in that niche.

So the answer is probably one client in one area in one niche.

      But every situation is different.

You do things in a case by case way being sure to maintain your integrity and do the right thing by your clients.

That will pay you more in the long run.

Often the most lucrative source of income in this field is referrals from happy clients who trust you.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh
