Creating a "portal" page

From what I understand a portal page is a page which displays graphs or other semi-live updated data.

I didn't know this was even possible but I've thought about it.

Like if I wanted my visitors to know what the current price is for gas, stocks, or anything else really.

Clueless on this subject.

What are you asking? Are you asking what is a "portal"

A portal (regarding to websites) is a page with many different information on the same subject. For example: a Car's Portal may be a website with: a Car's Forum, Car Pictures, Car Classiffied Ads, etc.

Those are "feeds". The site that is creating the data, like the Washington Post, would offer an RSS Feed or other similar script that you would put on your site.

The script (line of code), would offer up any updated information from their site to yours. Usually, these scripts are adjustable in that you can customize the block or size of the display on your site.

A "portal" in the sense that you are describing here, would be made up of related "live feeds" (the different news, or content being fed) placed in blocks on your page.

This would give the appearance of a news, or a web magazine on a specific subject.

Now, when I started out, what we called "portals" were landing pages that had several links on a page that looked like a search site devoted to one subject.

This page would be what people landed on after doing their search for a subject (keyword), with two or three columns of links to any authority sites about the keyword.

You could monetize these sites with banner ads (before Google Adsense) or other paid text links.

Sorry for the long answer but wanted to give you as much info on it as I could
