Addons with Hostgator

Good Evening Warriors;

I have finally moved to free blog hosting to paid through hostgator.

I am adding on my 2nd site to host gator and using wordpress with it, however, my 1st domain name shows up followed by the 2nd domain to get to it.....did I do something wrong when adding on a domain?

I just want www.my2nddomain.com NOT www.my1stdomain.com/my2nddomain.

Thanks for any help!

Terri

It sort of creates both, if you know what I mean (errm you probably don't).

I have hostgator with addon domains too, so I do know what you are talking about. You have the first domain you joined with ie. mydomain.com, and when you addon new domains they are sort of put inside the public_html directory of the original domain.

However, they are still their own domain as well! Do you use Fantastico to install Wordpress? When you do you see a list of your domains and you choose the one to install it to... you'll see...

    mydomain.com
    mydomain.mydomain2.com
    mydomain2.com

If you want to install Wordpress on mydomain2.com just select that one from the list. Then when you browse for mydomain2.com it should come up just fine, and won't appear to be a subdomain of mydomain.com.

I hope that makes sense. I know it isn't particularly technical! Maybe someone else will be able to explain addon domains better than me. Suffice to say, I have about 8 addon domains with hostgator and they're all just fine!

      Terri,

When creating an add-on domain it will also create a sub-domain and sub-directory along with just the domain. As long as you have purchased the domain and changed the name servers to hostgator the domain alone will load as normal and no one will know about the other configurations. The only way around this would be to purchase a reseller account so all of the domains are kept on separate cpanel accounts.

      Hope this helps,
      Kathy B.

Thank you Votoshka and Kathy for responding.....much appreciated.

Yes, I did see those choices and chose the one that did not include my main domain. However, it is installed on wordpress and I have main domain/2nd domain in order to access it, which I did NOT want.

But then Kathy, you mentioned, pointing the name server to hostgator which I don't think I did....bought it in namecheap but wasn't sure how to do that....obviously that is where I have gone wrong.

This, hands down, has been the biggest deterrant to getting my own domain for wordpress, but I figure once I learn this, I'll be cruisin'.

so, thanks again for your help!

Ahh yes, your problem will be that you don't have the nameservers configured correctly. Your nameservers will be something like ns123.hostgator.com and ns124.hostgator.com, and you'll need to change whatever they're set at to the ones hostgator gave you. Once you've done that your domains will show up properly!

I bought a new domain name on GoDaddy, set the nameservers for my hostgator account, created the addon domain, added wordpress and the site was live in less than an hour! I was surprised at how fast it propagated to the new nameservers. However, it may not always work that quickly

If you log in to your site control panel, scroll all the way down and on the left you will see a section that says "Account Information". In the middle you will see the Nameservers that you need, there will be two of them.

Once you have those, open up a new tab and log in to your Namecheap account. I've always used Godaddy, so I'm not familiar with Namecheap's control panel, but look for "Manage Domain Names" and you should find an option to edit the nameservers for your domain.

Put the two in that was shown in the HostGator Control Panel. Allow 24-48 hours for it to resolve the DNS and make the change, but sometimes it can be pretty quick.

    Hope that helped.

It's just the location of files for domain2 is. If you go to domain2.ext you will see the ocntent of that folder domain1(main domain)/domain2.ext

You need to be using an addon domain. When adding them as an addon domain through cPanel, you depict where you want the new domain root to be located, in relation to your main domain. So if you point the addon domain to /public_html/domain2 - everything uploaded in this directory will be shown at the root of http://domain2.com/ as long as you set nameservers.
