Complicated Is Essential For Success

As I read many posts here - the questions and pleadings by folk who are not getting anywhere fast - I've noticed a common denominator.

They want life too easy. They want a cure-all method... a 1-step system that lights the profit fire without having to chop the wood.

So they buy the product that maps everything out for them, that sets out their path to riches step by easy step. These products sell like crazy because it's in our nature to try and get success with as little effort as possible.

But since everyone else can do them too, the competition is huge.

In business the easy path is TOO easy. After all, the popular phrase: "If it were easy, everyone would be doing it" applies here.

The business or product that is complex keeps most of the competition out. They simply can't duplicate it easily.

I'm not immune to trying to do things without effort - I have people to do my lawns and grounds, paint and polish my house. But when it comes to business, I want tough. When I look over my products, not one of them can be built easily. Lord knows I've tried. I am Mr Simple for everything. But I still have to put in some considerable effort and skill.

My answer to the "business in a box" guys on this forum is AVOID the business that is easy to set up and easy to run - because it will also be easy for the competition to duplicate and improve, and take the lead.

Businesses built on simple operations also fail easily too.

The best businesses have a complexity, strength and advanced understanding that are like an armour coating for long term protection and profits.

    Hi Ken,

I'd like to offer my own personal clarification.

    Your title mentions only 'complicated.'

Then further down you mention -

    considerable effort and skill.
Then at the end you mention -

    complexity, strength and advanced understanding
My personal point is this - it depends on what the nature of your business is. If for example, you were using a certain type of software to achieve a task (EG building sites) then I totally agree with this statement -

The business or product that is complex keeps most of the competition out. They simply can't duplicate it easily.
BUT I would then make an important distinction, if for example, the core component of your business was YOU, as would be the case in that of a writer or information marketer/writer.

I believe that people can succeed with the simplest of systems in those cases because it then comes back (partly) to your point -

    considerable effort and skill.
...coupled with perhaps, education and personal character development in order to keep the competition at bay. The reason I feel it worth mentioning is because I myself, and others that I observe who's skills may lie in the area of writing/info marketing often get sidetracked with complicated technology and business models when in fact they can use a basic html editor and simple opt-in system and focus ALL of their energy on the wording that they use - and when done well, this 'system' is immune to competition as the writer themselves can only be copied, not replicated.

And as I mentioned in a previous thread, some IMers use complicated (sounding/looking) systems (where the complications are unnecessary) purely in order to make their system that they are touting look different and better than the competition's - and consequently many of their buyers spend ages trying to follow this unnecessarily complicated system, until they give up.

So to summarize it as -

    Complicated Is Essential For Success
is incorrect in my opinion, unfortunately. It depends what type of business you are in, and there is a lot to be said for K.I.S.S. unless you are in the minority who are producing a software (or similar) that you don't want to be copied.

I don't agree that it must be complicated.

I'm not saying everything is easy, but I believe the most important aspect is that it takes WORK. Making money on the internet is not for the lazy.

I use very simple methods to make money, and they work. But I do put my time in, and I work very hard!

    Just my opinion

It is really easy if you stick to proven methods. Yes you will have to put in the work but the more work you do the more money you will make money. It is easy once you know how.

  • Things can be simple, but not "easy". Complicated is NOT a given, when it comes to building a business. Persistence and work ARE.
