[Poll] How do you search online?

This is based on a recent interesting thread here in regards how people are searching for a site on the internet.

It has been stated that quite many don't actually type the URL for a web site in their browser, but instead type the keyword in Google (or browser search bar for that matter).

For example:

Let's say there is a product out there, let's call it "googleultimatum". We can assume that the product's site is www .googleultimatum.com

A) How many would fire up their browser and then type
www.googleultimatum.com to directly go to the site ?

B) How many would type "googleultimatum" in Google or in the search box in their browser?

I made a poll for this, thank you for participating!

G.

It really depends on what the product/site is. In Drews example of using Facebook I'd just type in the URL. But if it's your example of googleultimatum I'd type that in the search feature just to see what someone else might have said about it.

If it's a site that I would visit on a regular basis (and that I already haven't bookmarked) - URL. But the majority of searches I just type in the search feature.

If I'm going to a site like Facebook.com....I just type in www.facebook.com - no need for the extra steps.

Now, if there's a product name on a site - then I'll Google it (or type in address bar) to find the official site.

I usually know what I want, I use google search to find out where it is. I usually don't type in bits or parts of a string.

I type the url if I know it and go to Google if I don't know the url. I thought that's what everyone did, no?

You needed a vote for both It is completely situational... I some times use my url bar to search if I am not on google since they normally redirect to search results but I also type web addresses in google because I am unsure of the spelling, so both .

Being that most people here are marketers it doesn't really matter what we type in. What matters most is what your target customer types in.
According to my analytics I have had people go to google and type in,
www.mysitedomainname.com to land on one of my sites. They could have just typed the url straight into their browser but put it in the google search bar instead and then clicked through from the search result.

When you mean "search online", then I go to Google.

Directly visiting a URL isn't searching, is it?

If you're asking whether I type url's into google like some people. If I go to a website often, usually I go there directly.
