The components of a home study course

Hi guys,

If you would create a complete home study course
(within IM for example) what components would you include?

The pdf files(written course modules) and corresponding videos
are kind of standard, but what exactly would your ideal home
study course consist of?
#components #home #study

Well, most obviously, PDF files, and transcripts of any videos. (Please, please do this! There are deaf and hard-of-hearing people like me, and people without speakers. ) Interactive components are great -- worksheets, templates, checklists, 7-day guides with a brief overview of what you should do each day, etc.

Yep I'm with Zebrina on this, I too am hard of hearing so a good clear voice on the video is essential. I have to say that most video packages I've bought on the Warriorforum are easy to listen to even with different accents only 2 I have given up on. For this reason a pdf is a boon just in case the video is not clear, audio or otherwise.

  • In my own experience from marketing my own courses, people LOVE scripts, software, automated gimmicks and that kind of stuff. You know, the type of gimmicks you can have coded on ScriptLance for few hundred bucks and that can significantly improve your sales if you give it the right marketing twist.

Action steps! Don't leave it to your customers to organize an action plan. Action steps are missing from most courses I've seen, and I believe that's a big reason why people buy things and never do anything with them.

At the end of each module/lesson, detail a step-by-step plan of action. If you have a lot of modules or individual lessons, a separate PDF detailing the entire action plan from each one would be a good addition.

Also, homework assignments serve to get people involved instead of just reading. Homework reinforces the lessons, too, so it serves a dual purpose. By providing quizzes and to-do assignments your customers will understand the material more quickly, and so, think more highly of your course. This is great for selling new products to old customers, and great for testimonials and word of mouth referrals.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

Very important, give them a step by step plan of action and the buyers will love you

        Dennis,

You made a great point here. Actions steps for each module
        is really important component.

I need some terms clarified since english is not my native language.
Can you please tell me exactly what is:

          - a checklist
(this one is quite selfexplanatory, it's a list of tasks with checkboxes
that you check when you have done it, correct?)

but what is the difference between
          - a worksheat ?
          - a cheetsheat ?

            Alminc,

I suppose a "worksheet" could take several forms....

I just purchased a course for $300, to assist me with passing my NCLEX (the nurse's national licensure test)

            Here is what it included:
            1) Videos
            2) Other materials and resources compiled in a segment of the website
            3) Essentially each "video" corresponding to a "print-out" .PDF....when printed out together, it makes a 'workbook' full of smaller 'worksheets'.....

Each 'worksheet' has key core content....and, "blanks" that one can fill in as they watch and listen to the video lectures....

For example, here is one line directly off the worksheet:

            -Decreased Urine Output
--Kidneys either aren't being ________ or they are trying to _______

So, the student/learner must fill in those spots with material as they hear it from the lecture videos....I 'guess' that's what a 'worksheet' would be....I'm sure it can take many forms....

I'd want checklists and actions - sure show me how to do something but then just break it down into step by step chunks for me to follow and tick off.

And if you go with video make sure it's professional - and provide transcripts or written versions of them for those of us who prefer to learn by reading.

Oh and f you're delivering online make sure any video or audio can be downloaded to my ipod
