OMG - Another Reason Why You Should get Your Own Domain

Hey Guys,

I know most of you would know that there was one blogger blog that ranks for a gazzilion "make money" keywords. >> http://moneymakerinfo.blogspot.com/

You can see how the blog use to look here >> Make Money Online

But if you check the blog now it is gone!!!!!!!!!

That blog must have been making a killing but now all it's content is gone.

People it's time to take note and get your own domain where you have all the power over your own content. The worse could happen is google de-index you or something but at least you will have your years of hard work!

By the way - Sudeshna and I have a well-ranked site in the relationship domain - during the better periods of Google dance it moves up to #3 for the three main keywords.

BUT - it is hosted in Blogger and I have my own domain name mapped onto it for hosting. Should I relocate it to my paid hosting account? I have my paid hosting account too hosting other domains - so in terms of ownership it is not an issue. Just that, I shall have to re-create the folder structure so that the ranks are not lost - it does take a bit of donkey-work.

There's nothing to sue over. You agree to their terms of service when you open an account. The data wasn't lost, it was deleted intentionally, most likely for violating the terms of service.

That's why I've always had my own domain names for anything core to my business. I don't even host all my sites on one host, I have four different hosts. Putting all your eggs in one basket is seldom a good idea, and that includes the hosting basket.
Ic... ToS huh... Thx for the explanation Dennis. They have the control in the end. Very smart.... we have to agree to the ToS before using their service...

Yeah, I took note of that blog disappearing completely.. The owner of that blog is Alan Liew and he started that website back in 2000. Great person! - and had been #1 for "make money online" for a long time.. He was making a killing. Shoot, he had almost 50,000 backlinks pointing to that bad ace website. I hope he can recover from this and get it back there.

Because I am also targeting that keyword phrase, I could only wonder if I would ever pass him up in Google...lol - Almost there!

Anyways, blogger had sent out an email to everyone that had a free blogger account, that some crazy things were going to happen ( I can't find the email otherwise I would post it here). They didn't say they were going to delete any blogs, but I'm very happy that I took note of that email and moved on to a self-hosted domain and wordpress.

I really couldn't believe that it happened, but you just never know - both online and offline!

Well the blog is back now, but I think the message is clear.

Dennis to in addition to what you said, always use a registrar seperate from your hosting company. That way you can move you site at the drop of a hat and not have to fight with the hosting company simply pointing to different dns servers.

They also wouldn't have ranked for such competitive terms. People use blogger because google views their own properties with preference.

Then how can the person who is #1 now, do it? It can be done. The other person wasted their time building value to a property that wasn't theirs when they could have applied it to their own property and they would still be there now.

Sure it CAN be done, but nowhere near as easily as with a blogger blog.

Doesn't mean I think blogger is a good way to go...but if you can rank for a competitive term because of it then take the ball and run as fast and as far as you can. He made his run but it came to an end. Google could have just as easily deranked the blog.

            Hey everyone,

It would always make me smile when I would type in the magic keywords 'make money online' and see that guys blogspot blog rank number 1.

It made me rather sad when I read this post, and couldn't believe it until I went and visited the site myself. I really pity the person who made it, he earned quite well with it though until now though.

I've definitely learned my lesson, now I am never EVER going to use blogspot, in my life!

It is like building a house, 1 meter away from the ocean. You never know when the tide will come in and take it away from you. I like to build my house on good solid ground (that I actually own), far away from the ocean.

EDIT: I just read about people saying why didn't he host his own domain and hosting. Well, you do have a point, but I doubt that gives Google a reason to merely click a button and all his hard work goes to waste.

But yea, I do agree with the hosting part. Now this story will spread like wildfire, and blogspot will go downhill from now, in my opinion only. Google will read this story and many others probably, their trust (if they had any already) will diminish.

        Exactly....

Those who keep asking why these people didn't just pay for a domain fail to realize that had these sites not been on Blogger, they wouldn't rank as well as they do.

What I don't understand is why Google is on this rampage...

Is it because some of these sites are pushing traffic away as affiliates and thus taking money away from Google? Most of the sites I've seen get the plug pulled from Blogger seem to be ignoring the Google suggested monetization methods like Adsense and Amazon.

Clearly a conflict of interest here as far as Google is concerned. But what can you do about it.....

Getting your own domain is the best way to go in my view, and I can see that I'm not alone. Domains are relatively cheap now. You wouldn't send someone else to go and gamble with your money, so why in the world would you entrust someone else to host your blog?

So many people posted very useful information there that would help anyone looking to get into the Internet Marketing field. Hopefully he has or had a backup plan.

I remember coming across quite a few threads where people were stating that their blogger accounts were being deleted with no reason... I hope everyone that read those, along with me, moved on to getting hosting and a domain.

Perhaps, but unlikely, more likely to be the latest victim of Google's recent blogspot rampage. It was only the other day that I was reading how some guy lost his blogspot blog and he was using the cache to rescue the content.

The fact is Google reserves the right to strip anybody's site whenever they like. Everyone should be taking notice and making a conscious decision to building up their own web properties where possible. Web 2.0 properties have their place, hell I use them, but if all my lenses and external blogs got zapped tomorrow it wouldn't be a showstopper.

The problem with Blogspot is that once you start going down that road, and building up some authority in the SERPs for keywords, then there's nothing you can do to safeguard yourself. As far as I know you can't 301 a blogspot account!

I liken this to a situation my aunt had with her IT training business a couple of years ago. The whole business relied on grants from the government for getting people trained in basic IT skills. The funding got cut, the business folded.

If your business is fully dependent on something that you don't control then you'd better make sure you have a contingency plan, unlike my aunt :S

His alexa ranking was pretty good and everytime I posted there I got about 60 visits to my site. Given all the ads and distractions that were on the page, I'll assume a 5 - 10% click through rate, so I'd say easily 1,000 + hits per day.

Unfortunately, you do have to rely on someone else when it comes to your business.

If you use shared or virtual hosting, you'll be relying on the hosting company to keep your sites up and not boot you from their servers for some reason. If you co-lo, you may still have problems. If you locate on-site, you'll be depending on a team of employees and the power and telcom grids to allow you to operate. For example, one company I used to work for had the building next door go up in flames and our primary servers were offline for over a week while power and phone lines were cut and being repaired after the fire.

Basically, you have to decide who's worth relying on and who's not and this does change over time. I used to think that Google's Blogger was reliable as long as you weren't auto-create spam blogging but, obviously, that's no longer the case and they can no longer be relied upon.

You know what is sick ... is that they put all that time and effort in a platform that they do not control ... can be deleted at any time as they have found out. Very short sighted planning. They could have flipped that site and made a killing if they had bought a domain and hosted it. Now they have nothing and would have to start all over to achieve those results.

I don't get what the uproar is over. You spend umpteen hours building a blog to generate income for yourself on a site that you don't own or have any control over because you are too cheap to spend $10/mo on a hosting account. Then you complain when the site owner decides to nuke the blog.

Show me just one example in the "real world" where anything similar to that kind of behavior is tolerated!

It's just baffling to me. WHY would anybody spend so much time building what amounts to a sandcastle on a beach, and honestly expect it not to disintegrate sooner or later.

And others stand around and say, "Oh, that's just TERRIBLE that all your hard work should got to waste like that!" WTF?

We're talking less than THIRTY CENTS A DAY for your own hosting and domain name.

Whatever your time is worth, isn't a $0.30/day for "insurance" worth preserving your time investment?

would have done nowhere near the traffic.

He did well because of Google's ownership and preference for the platform.

Unfortunately, once they decide that they aren't getting anything out of
YOUR efforts, they simply toss you into the scrap heap.

It's the kobayashi maru all over again.

Google is essentially a dictatorship. And please don't give me that crap
      about breaking TOS.

If the blog broke TOS, then it did it from day 1 because nothing on that
blog has changed, as far as type of content, in years.

So why now? Why after 4 years can it?

      TOS?

      Bull sh*t!

Google is what it is...the most evil entity on the Internet and I am just
thankful to God that they don't account for more than $200 a month of
      my total income.

So when they someday kick my ass to the curb, I can smile, give them
the finger and not give a sh*t.

You rely on Google, you have a fool for a business owner.

So you're saying that no self-hosted site can ever hope to get traffic equivalent to what Blogger will get the same site? Ever?

If that's the case, then why are people bothering with SEO and Traffic Geyser and backlinks and all that stuff, instead of just putting everything into sites on Blogger and milking them for all they can get until they get nuked?

It would appear that a few little blogs on Blogger will get you all the traffic you'll ever need and can ever hope to get.

At least, that's what it sounds like people are saying.

Why would you go to the trouble of starting your own online business and now spend $15 on a domain name?

I've had plenty of self-hosted Wordpress blogs that way outrank Google's blogger blogs.

That's just a crying shame that this site was deleted.

No, that's not what I'm saying. But this site did as well as it did because
of where he hosted it. 4 years ago, a blogger blog was gold. At that time,
hosting it at your own site, against all that competition, would have been
          a disaster for him.

          He did the smart thing.

If there was a problem with the blog, it should have been deleted right
          away.

          Hell, even within 30 days.

          But after 4 years?

That's just vindictive bull sh*t and there is no excuse for it.

If Google doesn't want you to use their blog platform, yank it. But don't
string innocent and honest people along for years and then yank the rug
          out from under them.

What they did was wrong on so many levels.

They are, without any doubt whatsoever, the most evil entity on the
Internet and I can only hope and pray that someday, somebody will take
them down and put them out of business.

I completely agree on this one.

And for those of you thinking he wouldn't get the same traffic with his own hosted domain, another thing that baffles me. If most of you said he gives valuable content and lots of followers, then he wouldn't have problem following him anywhere, i would. If he can get that blog made gazillions, then he definitely wouldn't have a problem monetizing and ranking even a .info domain that is hosted.

I've seen many NON blogger blogs rank in that position for Make Money Online and other very competitive niches over the years, so it certainly can be done and if it's worth all the trouble this guy went to with backlinking and such to get to that spot, it would have been equally worth it to do it on his own domain and host. He would still have it if he had and maybe he would be in position #2 or #3 at times, but he could flip that site for a pretty penny in those positions for those keywords.

Last time I checked Google for "make money online", there were 3 blogger blogs in the top 10 results.

And now, not even 1 in top 40 results that I've checked.

You folks are missing the point.

I knew Blogger's TOS inside and out. Why? Because of all the problems with
WordPress blogs hosted on WordPress. You absolutely cannot use them for
      the purpose of making money...period.

Blogspot has NO such provision in its TOS and if you read their TOS (at
least the one from about 6 months ago, last time I looked) and then looked
at this guy's blog, there was absolutely nothing in his blog that was in
      violation.

      Nothing.

So Google changes the rules after 4 years?

      WTF?

That's like a guy walking into a store and saying "Hey, I want to use your
widget for my business. Can I use it like this?" And the guy says, "Sure"

4 years later he knocks on the guys door and says, "I changed my mind.
You can't use my widget for that anymore" and takes it away...putting
      the guy out of business.

      Bull sh*t!

And those wanting to call this Google bashing, sour grapes or whatever
else you want to call it, have a talk with some very respected Warriors
here (I won't mention names) and ask them what they think of Google
      as an evil entity.

They are what they are...evil beyond anything I've seen online in my 7
plus years of doing business on it.

You can bash this poor guy for, as you call it, putting all his eggs in one
basket. But he had absolutely NO reason to believe this would ever happen
to him...certainly not after 4 years.

If Google had a problem with this blog, it should have been yanked
      immediately.

And nobody is going to change my mind about that no matter what they
      say.

So yes, this is something we're never going to agree on.

      So be it.

Google sucks. Google is evil. And I pray every night that they go out of
      business someday.

As for waiting for 4 years to delete it. None of us know really how that person got to #1. He may have used Black Hat tactics that got him in trouble. Whatever the reason, makes no difference ... Google CAN if they want to. They OWN it.

You want a sustainable business, build on your own domain and hosting and control your own site. It can still be deleted for spamming by the host, so no one is ever really safe, but chances are far less likely if you are not a spammer that it will get deleted.

One problem with your rationale here.

          Hindsight.

Google wasn't always the evil SOB it is today.

Remember when PPC was a cakewalk?

Nobody had anything to worry about when they direct linked or didn't
have an authority type landing page. PPC costs were a joke.

Suddenly, Google yanks the rug out from 99% of affiliate marketers
because they decide they don't like the way the game was being played

Even though there was nothing in their TOS about any of the things
          these people were doing.

The problem with your argument is that 4 years ago, this person had
absolutely NO reason to believe this would happen.

Sure, today we know...STAY AWAY FROM BLOGGER. Hell, I wouldn't trust
Google with my site rankings which is why I don't even bother with SEO
and instead use other means of getting people to my site.

          But 4 years ago?

Hell, when I first started online, my mission was to rank at Google.

Today? Why bother? They change their rules more often than I change
          my socks.

Yes, anybody who TODAY puts up a blog on their platform with the
intention of putting in THAT kind of work into it is a fool.

          But 4 years ago.

It was unheard of to even THINK that a blog with good content, great
traffic and nothing at all against any TOS would be deleted.

So please let's stop playing Monday morning quarterback.

This should have NEVER happened...not like this.

I had similar conversations 4 years ago. It has always been a no brainer to me that building a business on a third party system is foolish.

This is all about "enhanced user experience" with Google. Google doesn't want sales pages and MMO stuff dominating their search results any longer. That's their option, and honestly, with Bing trying to take away part of their share of the search and ad business, it's probably a smart move.

Sure, a lot of people trusted Google and Squidoo and other free sites, but the fact remains ... they can change the game any time they want to and any time it's in their own best interests to do so. I never trusted any of them.

This is a sidenote: Doing some research, I found:

This is an excerpt from Acme People Search forum where Alan is a member.

"Very bad news. You know what the Blogger team did. They have set their system to permanently delete my blog. Yes, this is what they done to me. This means my blog will not be able to restored and this is the end of moneymakerinfo.blogspot.com.

I'll issue a refund that I can afford. I've spent some money on SEO fee.

I built the blog using 4 years. 3 years in top 3 rankings in Google. I post unique content, No gambling, sex or any other non family-friendly content. The blogger team has reviewed by blog about two years ago and they are OK with it. But yesterday, suddenly my blog was deleted by them permanently. Seems like they see the topic 'make money online' is spam now.

What they are doing is totally ridiculous.

Give me some time on the refund issue.

            Thanks,
            Alan Liew"

I thought this was interesting because everyone assumes this guy was making bank by being in that spot, but it appears that "the bank" was not large enough to cover refunds to people.

Another point is that if his content was Google approved, and I'm not saying that it was ... there are plenty of other ways to violate Google TOS, one of them being black hat SEO tactics, which he may or may not have used to get and maintain that position. Since no one really knows except for Google, everything is just speculation.

I'd say Google is becoming the government of the Internet in many ways. This is a risky position for them, since it brings them into conflict with real world governments. Of course, it's not good for us either since their form of government is essentially a corporate bureaucratic dictatorship. It's no wonder they don't get along with China, they're too much alike.

Apart from issues of personal control, having your own domain has many other advantages. Investment however minimal as it is nowadays is an issue to consider as well as the fact that you may need to pay for many domains and host them at a significant cost. Most marketers host their blogs free on the many available sites and therefore spending money on their own websites is definitely a disadvantage.

However, having a related domain name to your niche is a way of leveraging your position with search engines, however minimal this may be. There is also the issue of customizing your domain to look exactly as you wish.

A personalized website can be built intelligently to do many things at once. Sometimes you may not need to create a new website to promote a new business. All you do is simply create a dedicated page or pages that you can then individually promote for its keywords.

Here is the email he probably received from blogger.

    "Hello,

Your blog at http://moneymakerinfo.blogspot.com has been reviewed and confirmed as in violation of our Terms of Service for: SPAM. In accordance to these terms, we've removed the blog and the URL is no longer accessible.

For more information, please review the following resources:

SPAM seems to be the issue, as some of you have mentioned above in this thread... Looks like "make money online" is crap in Googles eyes or he was truly spamming in some way, shape or form.

Blogger is using an automated process to identify suspected spam blogs. Spammers create their blogs, intentionally, to look like genuine blogs. There will always be actual spam blogs not detected as being spam blogs (false negative detection), and there will always be legitimate blogs detected as being spam blogs (false positive detection).

If your blog was falsely detected, you're going to have to have Blogger remove the flag and / or un delete the blog.

I recently was planning on incorporating google blogs into one of my strategies. Forget it now. I would only use blogger for a temporary solution. Any compeditor could shut you down by clicking on your adsense all day if you depended on that for your income. If 'SPAM' really was the reason, it could just as easily be that all the make money bloggers were spamming his blog with their spammy automated spam posts. I can't say one way or the other without more info.

I'm not a Google fan, but you don't know what this guy did to get his site taken down. He may have repeatedly abused Google AdWords TOS by cloaking, in which case he probably lost more than just his Blogger account.

How much of your business relies on Gmail, Analytics, Webmaster Tools, Google Docs? They can shut down your profiles at any time for any reason. Pretty scary stuff.

Also, how much of your traffic comes from Google Search? Owning your own domain isn't enough if SEO is your main traffic method. I've had a few sites delisted over the past few years that ranked for highly coveted keywords, which could have put me out of business overnight if that were my only strategy.

What if EZA decided to make their outgoing links "no-follow" or stopped accepting new articles? Highly doubtful, but just trying to make the point.

Don't rely on just one traffic method. Not saying to avoid using 3rd party services entirely, but diversify your traffic sources, income strategies and marketing methods if you want to survive. The Internet moves at a very fast pace and the game can change very fast.

I hope the blogger was at least smart enough to backup his blog posts. Bummer story, whether he deserved it or not.

      Hi,
Another point is that if his content was Google approved, and I'm not saying that it was ... there are plenty of other ways to violate Google TOS, one of them being black hat SEO tactics, which he may or may not have used to get and maintain that position. Since no one really knows except for Google, everything is just speculation.
If you look at the link provided in the OP you can see that the image above the text has been replaced by a poorly fitting 'hotlinking disabled' image - placed there (presumeably) by the person who's image he was hotlinking to (which appears to be cambridgebusinessacademy dot com).

Perhaps he was hotlinking lots of images and they complained to Google. Also, all of the articles on the front page are 'guest posts' - perhaps google didn't like this either?

He's also got twelve 'sponsors' ads, a banner at the top, three adsense blocks, an affiliate link in the navigation bar, a 'write for us' link and an 'advertise with us' link.

      Overkill? Asking for trouble?

You would think anyone with enough smarts to get to G1 for this keyword would have backups and also a back up plan . Almost would bet he does .

This is a lesson in support of your own domains , diversity in hosting, and never becoming complacent as hero to zero is not a big step.

Ya always start out and do it right the first time. Hosting is only $10 per month at the most so its worth it to have your own hosted blog for sure.

This seemed like a good thread to place my curiosity - my website is company hosted due to compliance and in order to to get my own domain, it will cost about 100$.

Of course, the rankings I have now will all fall, but is it still worth the price for my own domain name when SEO is the primary source and will continue to be the primary source of my traffic?

    Ok this definitely scares me.

I do have my own domain, but I'm also still hosted on Blogger. (Google)

My blog is also a "make money online" blog, and recently I've been doing really well in the search engines, esp Google.

I'm scared that something like this can happen to me and all my hard work go down the line.

My problem is that I have no idea how to use hosting! I even paid for it once, which is probably expired by now, from GoDaddy, and had no idea how to get it set up.

    Wish someone could help me...

I don't want to risk losing all my content getting it set up though, and definitely don't want to risk my rankings that I've now started to gain. :/

Unless you are dirt poor I do not know why you would not own your own domain. Even if you are poor you can do a few tasks for someone to raise the money to get a domain and hosting.

This is not the first time his blog was disabled. He actually blogged about it last May.

Make Money Online: How I Got My Blog Deleted and Restored by Blogger.com

There seem to be a lot of members saying how great the blog was but he doesn't seem very wise to me. He should have taken steps months ago to pay for hosting somewhere else.

The Blogger Help Forum lists 4 steps to try and get your blog restored. Hopefully he is taking those steps.

Edit: Just saw the posts that it is back up.

I read a report by Josh Spaulding who once held the number 1 spot saying the number 1 spot in google for make money online was worth $6000 a month. Saw many people saying its worth $100K per month.

I used to guest blog on there quite a bit and the traffic is quite good. He was losing sales though by allowing others to write content and make sales from his blog. He could have outsourced the daily content and made sales himself.

His biggest mistake was the fact that he never collected an email list!

Some folks said he wouldn't rank as good if he had his own domain. I beg to differ! If he collected his reader's emails in an autoresponder list and moved his blog with a couple of weeks' notice, he'd be just fine. When you have tons of awesome content and so many loyal readers, who cares about the ranking? Steve Pavlina makes 40k/month just from his blog. I didn't check whether he ranks for any keywords but he has an army of loyal readers and tons of content. He also has a huge list where his readers subscribe. He does top dollar coaching programs every now and then, and makes a killing with it too. Oh it gets better: His blog is a high brow philosophy and self improvement blog, not even Internet marketing!

Great content, loads of loyal readers, comments, user activity. That's the gold mine, not the artificial ranking. These elements get you ranked (especially user activity and user generated content) no matter what the search engines do.

That's not entirely true If you want to know the entire story of my make money online ranking read the free report at The Make Money Online Niche Exposed

The highet I got was #4 and the income from it was much lower than many believe. I tell exactly how much I made in the report.
