Do You Make Big Money With Amazon ?

Hello Everyone,

I have made decent money promoting Clickbank products. However I am Baffled by
people who Claim to be making Big Money promoting Amazon Products.

Am I missing something ? Is it all about the backend ?

If I promote a $100.00 product I will make a SMALL $4.00. Why Bother ?
There could be the argument about many sales but I do not believe it.

Please Enlighten me if I am missing something.

Thank You,
Mr Ex

I agree Amazon is a tough pill to swallow. Sure its fun making $30 dollar says but when you only get a pathetic $1.30 from it how can you be happy. Sell a $1000 item and you only get $40-50? Doesn't sound fair.

Ive just removed some of my amazon ads on sites its not converting well and changing them to adsense and will see what the results look like.

Amazon does convert very well btw however it seems your better off going with Adsense or some other affiliate program that pays higher.

However testing is the key because you will experience different results in different niches. Sometimes Amazon ads might be the better choice.

Because it is a volume game with Amazon. Amazon has credibility and trust a million times over some sales page that tells you how to make your teeth white by drinking apple juice.

They also have an amazing up sell process so often people with buy multiple products.

I would personally advise against promoting amazon purely because of this. Considering the amount of time you would spend promoting amazon's products, the return does not warrant the effort. Spend your time promoting clickbank etc and you will have a far greater return for your time!

Whoa! I didn't know Amazon paid so little!

Good to know. I've got Amazon products on one of my sites, but it's very new, so nothing has sold yet. I was wondering if I should put Amazon products on another site or go for a different affiliate program. Now I think I'll go for something different and go for a mix of Amazon and other products between my sites.

I am sure Daniel Brock and Sara Young (two successful Amazon affiliates) will tell you much, MUCH different. But from what I can see with Amazon, people already WANT TO BUY, so there isn't a complicated presell process you'd have to go through like you would with Clickbank.

I've focused on Amazon for that reason alone now. While I haven't made any sales yet, I feel like I'm close.

I have roughly 10 Clickbank sites - all together they might earn me a few hundred a month.

I have 10 Amazon sites(got 10 more coming up in the works) - they earn me collectively $1200/m.

Over the past year they have been earning steady and I haven't done a thing to them.

Not a bad amount of money considering the maybe 5 minutes I have spent on them the last 9-10 months or so.

Just so you know, once you sell 20 items, your commission goes up to 6.5%. 7.5% commission after you sell like 150 items or so, which is really easy to do.

A trick is to target niches were people will buy a crap ton of items. Hobby oriented niches are like that. Someone comes in to buy a $10 item and ends up spending $300. You get commission on everything.

6.5-7.5% commission is not bad on a $300 purchase. In fact, that's better than a lot of the ebooks out there...

I know amazon niche sites are a good model but I just cringe at you saying 10 sites earn $1200/month collectively. Each site is only averaging $120 a month? Are each of those sites just promoting a single product and what kind of traffic are you seeing?

Amazon sites are good earners - if the niche research is done properly. I would go as far as suggesting that keyword / niche research is more important with Amazon sites than with most other types of thin sites.

Get it right and those little sites keep making green.

Do you know how many regular folk would kill for an extra $50-100 per month? That small amount can change some peoples lives, and Im talking about famlies in the USA and other developed countries.

Stop putting peoples achievements down because thats basically hands off income for him.

First of all, I was not putting anyone down. I said "I" cringe, referring to myself. If someone took offense (like you obviously did), then I apologize. I was asking him some questions. To "me", a site averaging $120/month is not worth it to "me". Which is why I asked him questions. If he's creating a single product site and not getting much traffic, then $120/month is good. I'm following other models that average me more than that per site. Others can and will feel differently, as it's only my opinion.

$120/mo from a site I barely even think about? Times TEN? I'll gladly take it.

Just because it's not the "I make five figures from sites I haven't touched in months" doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.

It takes like what, maybe 2 hours at max to make a complete amazon site with absolutely no upkeep?

I think that is a pretty damn good trade off if you ask me.

It is now coming up on a year since I made my first batch of 10 sites - still going strong with no input on my end.

          I'll take it

Thanks Daniel, that's exactly what I needed to hear. If it's only taking 2 hours to set up, then hell yeah it's worth it. Especially with no upkeep. How many pages is each site?

      1. As mentioned, Amazon has a huge trust factor and a great upsell process.

      2. You make commission on all items sold on a given order, not just the item you promote. Watch your items sold and see the weird things people will add to their shopping cart, especially if they need a few dollars to avoid paying shipping.

And yes, people will add a $10-$15 item to avoid paying $5 in shipping.

      3. At least in the USA, Amazon offers a tiered commission structure. The more items you sell in a month, the higher your commission rate. That $30 sale might only make you a dollar or two, but it could be the one that bumps your commission from 4% to 6% - a 50% raise - on everything sold that month starting with item one.

      4. Sign up with one program, and you have a choice of hundreds of thousands of items you can promote, from magazine subscriptions and digital downloads to industrial equipment.

      Oh yeah, one more thing...

I've never seen a single thread on this forum whining about serial refunders on Amazon...

From a previous amazon thread there was a lady making $10,000 a month from amazon. I'd say that's not bad at all. Is there work put into it? I'm sure but that's just like anything else.

As Daniel mentioned, the fact that they have "suggestions" means that people looking for a cd player are more likely to add more to their cart (speakers, cd's, etc) and your commission goes up.

It does seem to be a numbers game with Amazon but for simple little sites it can add up.

    Good luck!

That's me that is making over $10,000 a month.

Prior to using Amazon we used CJ, Linkshare and ShareaSale merchants. The conversions were pitiful. One day we decided to add Amazon to one of our sites. We only did it as we were wanting to give our readers the ability to compare prices. We were reluctant to do it for ages because as the OP says - Amazon pays only 4%. We didn't realize at the time that that is only for the first 6 items you sell in a month. The commission goes up progressively to 8.25% if you sell enough items.

I didn't even check Amazon for a couple of days because I wasn't expecting anything and couldn't believe it when I saw around 12 sales. At that time, with CJ merchants we had maybe one sale every few days if we were lucky. So 12 sales on one day was pretty amazing.

We haven't turned back since that day. We only use Amazon products now.

      Amazon converts extremely well!

Because it is at least 5-10 times easier to sell a high quality physical product than to convince someone to buy a shi**y eBook about weight loss or building chicken coops.

    Just saying.

Also, depending on your niche, Amazon can be much more profitable than Adsense.

On one of my sites, I convert 5.6 out of every 100 unique visitors. Average commission - $1.72. That's $9.6 for every 100 visitors.

On that very same site I used to average ~16% CTR and average CPC of $0.23 which makes it $3.68 for every 100 visitors.

Why don't you test it yourself instead of jumping to silly conclusions?

Amazon has alot of authority and people are used to buying from amazon. Just as a test, I want you to ask all your friends about amazon and then ask them about the clickbank product you are promoting.

You will find out for yourself why people make money from amazon.

Now a days I simply use Amazon as a way to earn money back on my own purchases, and those of my friends and family. We all use the site anyway for our purchases, so I might as well make money when we do. I no longer actively promote it, but it was never a primary source of income for me anyway. Arranged purchases work best as what's to really stop someone from buying something from a third party seller for less? When they do that as we all know, it doesn't count and you don't get a commission.

My attraction to Amazon is that I can use it as a stepping stone to set up an online site/store that can be eased over to selling physical or drop shipped products at a much higher commission. My sites aren't micro-sites though. I will have a lot more leverage if I can show my history of results when approaching a company to do business with down the track. That is my long term goal for my sites.

I get a conversion rate of 3% at the moment so Amazon really does convert.

It is also a great alternative to AdSense in niches that offer a poor CPC or poorly targeted ads.

Another benefit is that the products often get searched for a lot with little competition. If you take the time to create original content on the product you can dominate the SERPs with little off-site SEO. The competition is usually other sites copying the Amazon or manufactures product page. They are easy to beat.

Its definitely possible to make good money with physical products.

For me its much easier than with Clickbank.

I don't always use Amazon. Sometimes I go with other affiliate networks. If you know a particular niche and know where they like to buy - its always best to promote that merchant.

Regarding the commission rate - the going rate is 5-9% depending on the merchant and the product (Amazon starts at 4 but quickly goes up as you make more sales), but even 5% is great if the volume is high.

Now, just to show that its possible to make good money with physical products:

Recently one of my sites made $5,000 in one month because the one product it promotes was on sale and a lot of people wanted it for the lower price. The commission I got for that product was 7%. (It was not Amazon, but rather a merchant on Commission Junction.)

Another one of my sites regularly makes around $2,000 a month and I spend less than 1 hour a month on it.

Both sites are in a niche that I know very well, and so - I knew what to say in my landing page to encourage people to buy through me and which merchant to promote.

Other niches that I'm not really familiar with also make me money, but less.

    Hope that helps someone....

Not sure what Daniel does, but I target a few related keywords per site.

You need to concentrate on what is called 'buying keywords'. Product names and model numbers are great - as Daniel mentioned above. They convert very well and are easy to rank for.

As I understand it, it's just another arbitrage strategy. In a nutshell, you find a source for cheap books in like-new condition, then resell them on Amazon through their program.

The folks who have mentioned it to me concentrate on things like textbooks, reference books and such. Others like to flip volume stuff like video games.

A lot of the stuff you can find about eBay applies, minus the mechanics of the auction itself.

I currently have one Amazon site on the first page of Google and Yahoo. They generate a sale or two here and there. If you want to know what it's like to be an Elephant at the circus then go with Amazon. BUT, like Daniel says, there is absolutely no upkeep. So, no complaints.

I realized recently that the commission % does increase but on a month to month basis. For example, after 7 sales it increases from 4% to 6% but only for that month. It then goes back down to 4% at the start of the following month. This kind of threw me for loop. I assumed it was cumulative.

I am currently changing towards amazon.

The reason is that I feel less dirty promoting real products. Clickbank products are often spam-related. The niches might not be so spammy, but if the eBook sells well, more and more people will push that product.

So having a link in a comment saying "cool rc helicopters" is easier to get away with than "get your ex back".

Also, you should not focus on the 4% commission. The real commission at Amazon is 6% and above as soon as you get your websites together. You only need to sell 7 products to reach that level.

Although Amazon Affiliate program is one of the most Affiliates, however, when it comes to make money by affiliate marketing, Amazon may be not a good choice because of its low commissions.
In my eyes, you can try some small Affiliate programs because usually, you can earn more money from them than those popular Affiliate programs.
