Anyone Interested in Mentoring an Experienced IM'er?

I'm not sure how this is ultimately going to go, or if it's even allowed, but I'm at a point where I'm willing to take that chance, so here goes.

I'm wondering if there is anyone out there in WarriorLand who might be interested in mentoring someone who is not a newbie, but is struggling to stay self-employed right now.

I've mentioned my background elsewhere, so I'll keep it as brief as possible here.

I started studying IM as a hobby back in 1999. Since it was only a hobby, I didn't make my first dollar online until 2003. At that point, I started working more diligently, and I moved to full-time status in late 2004.

However, I've always had a bad habit of just randomly throwing a bunch of "stuff" at the wall, hoping one or two things would stick.

They always have. I've been blessed to work for myself for the last four years, and have been fortunate enough to, until recently, earn a comfortable income.

Problem is, all I've done is prove that I can randomly earn money online.

What I've never been able to do is focus on just one area of IM with consistent, diligent effort, in order to build a lasting, sustainable business.

I've become a jack of all trades, master of none. What this ultimately means is that, I understand the mechanics of making money in almost every area of IM, but I'm missing the higher level, more technical details that can be the difference between success and failure.

This in turn causes me to jump to another area of IM, and the cycle continues unabated.

Here's what I can offer to someone who is experienced and successful in their particular area of IM, who might be willing to serve as a mentor.

1) I'm happy to provide a lengthy, detailed testimonial for you in print, audio, video - any format you'd like.

2) You can package everything we work through as a case study in order to profit from your own list, create a WSO, or anything else you wanted to do with it.

3) Possibly a small amount of cash, though my budget is pretty constrained right now. Wouldn't be more then a few hundred unfortunately.

4) My everlasting gratitude and loyalty.

One big advantage of mentoring an experienced IM'er is that I already have the basic processes down. You don't have to start at the beginning with me, or worry that what you are teaching me is over my head. Very unlikely that will happen.

Of course, one big challenge of mentoring someone like me, is that I have very likely picked up some bad habits along the way that will have to be broken and rebuilt.

As far as what area of IM I want to focus in, I'm really not sure. As mentioned, I've dabbled in almost every area of IM. I have a $350 Adsense day in my background, and a $1,200 Clickbank day. I once ran a PLR article membership site that had 340 members at its peak.

I think the only thing I haven't done is create and sell my own product. (Unless the PLR membership site counts!)

So I don't want to pin myself down to one specific area just yet. I'd rather talk with several people and see if we can find a good "fit". The ability for the two of us to work well together is more important to me then the specific area of IM we will be working in.

Well, that's my pitch. Again, my apologies to Allen and the moderators if this post is out of bounds.

If it isn't please drop me a PM if you might be interested in working with me, or reply to this thread if you have any questions or comments.

Thanks in advance!

~Mike (with flame suit on....you just never know how something like this is going to go)

      Mike,

What happened? It sounds like you've had some success in the past. Did you just let them fizzle out? Why do you feel like you need mentoring when you already know how to make money?

Give us some more details as to why you're in the situation you're in. I respect if you want to keep your background private though.

It sounds like you lack a clear plan...

Maybe I can help.. PM me if you want to chat.

In your opinion.. What area of creating long term income are you failing at?

        Getting the ball rolling?

        Keeping the ball rolling?

        Hi Aaron,

        Thanks for writing!

I have nothing to hide, though there is one part below that I'll omit if the person involved asks me to do so (I know he's active here)....

I was trying to keep an already long post from getting too much longer at the beginning, so I'll try and cover some of the more specific details here.

About 6 months after I started making a little money with affiliate programs (about $500/month) the whole Traffic Equalizer/Page Generator thing took off.

I got sucked into that world big time, and though it was very, very good to me (that's where the $300+ Adsense days came from) it obviously didn't have a long term future. As things became more and more technical, I also fell behind.

From there, in summer 2005, I noticed someone launching a PLR article site. After looking it over, I realized that I could do the same thing, since doing so didn't require a great deal of technical skill.

I had established a relationship with a few marketers (including Allan Gardyne and Andre Chaperon) by then, so I put the whole thing together within 30 days, and together with them and a few other JV partners, launched Article Lightning.

It was a raging success at the beginning. I sold out my open spots within 7 days.

Six weeks later, my grandfather died. I tried to fly in to be with him at the end, but my plane arrived 3 hours too late.

I was devastated. He was like a second father to me. It dropped me into a severe funk/depression that I didn't come out of for four months.

By the time I came back to AL (it was mostly functioning on its own with my staff of writers) the entire PLR landscape had changed. Competitors were everywhere, using tactics that I couldn't ethically allow myself to use.

I lost my best and most helpful forum member (TimG) to an exclusivity contract to one of my competitors, and I struggled to regain momentum.

Like the page generation stuff before it, competitors started getting more and more technical in what they offered, and they took on partners that allowed them to scale in ways that I just couldn't.

After struggling with a direction for AL for the next 9 months, I made the decision to let it slowly run it's course on its own, and once it dropped below 50 members, I closed it.

By early 2007, I found myself in much the same situation I'm in now - trying to stay afloat with a declining income. On a whim, I started throwing a few affiliate products out into the Adwords content network.

One of them stuck - in a major way.

Since that time, I've been living off a single Adwords campaign that once pulled in $16K in sales over one month. As Google tightens up the content network however, they're slowly choking off this campaign. It's down to 25% of what it was at its peak, and I can see the writing on the wall.

Which is why this thread originated.

Hope that helps give a little more background. I've been amazingly fortunate to earn what I have over the past several years, and I've definitely built my skills to a certain level, but nothing I've done really lends itself to the kinds of focused, long-term businesses that I see a large number of people building here.

I'm hoping to find some way to tap into that. I'm 80-90% of the way there. It's the last 10-20% I'm missing that - right now - is the difference between success and failure for me.

For what it's worth, perhaps we could be support partners, to help keep each other on track and focused. Hit me up if interested.

      Mike,

Any time you want to talk, give me a call. If I don't answer, leave a message. (You get the generic machine message right now.)

In the mean time, trite as it sounds, grab a copy of the goal-getting book at A Simple System to Achieve Your Goals

I know you, dude. You keep score. What you need is something to beat, not something to chase. Set it up so it's a competition with your projections.

Thanks Barry! I appreciate that. Once I take everything in and the dust settles, I may just do that.

LOL...Paul. You're right. I do keep score. And there was a time in my life that I was competitive as hell. I'm not quite sure what happened to that guy, but I'm guessing he's still in here somewhere. He's just lost his way.

I'll grab the goal setting book and go through it. Thank you!

    Mike,

Thanks for sharing your story, mine is similar, and I have a feeling there are a few more of us out there. I think whoever takes you on would do well with a case study/product for marketers such as ourselves who have seen success by many peoples standards but have been unable to build a sustainable business from their success.

I hope you find the mentor that will take you to the next level, and wish you much (sustainable) success!
