Need Help with Redirect Link

17 replies
Hi Warriors!

I can't figure out how to link to the Amazon RESULTS page for elliptical trainers using a redirect from my domain.

I created a text hyperlink and chose the text after a href= which was Amazon.com: elliptical - Amazon.com: Sports & Outdoors

I went into my hosting and set up a redirect using that link and it doesn't work. Now if I simply paste that link into a browser, it works. So can we not do redirects to Amazon results pages or what?

If not, how can I get around this issue without having to build a website on my domain?

    You have 3 options.

    First of all, who is your domain registrar? You should be able to forward the domain to the url, and even should be able to mask it. Look up in the FAQ's for your registrar and check out forwarding and masking.

    Option 2 is to point the domain to your normal web host and use a php page to redirect.
    Code:
    <?php
    header("Location: http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fqid%3D1223588923%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D%26keywords%3Delliptical%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Aelliptical%252Ci%253Asporting&tag=weddingsociet-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325");
    ?>
    The above php code should work as a redirect. Just put it in index.php. (The code was from memory, so if it doesn't work then let me know)

    The third option is to have a regular html page on your host and use a meta-redirect.
    Code:
    <META http-equiv="refresh" content="1;URL=http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fqid%3D1223588923%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D%26keywords%3Delliptical%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Aelliptical%252Ci%253Asporting&tag=weddingsociet-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325">
    This code just goes into index.html and will redirect to the page.

    If you have any trouble with any of those, let me know and I can help out more.

    Just thought of another option... Do you have a link cloaking script set up on any of your sites? If not, you can purchase a .info for a couple dollars and install a link cloaker script on it. Then you could put the link through the link cloaker and would get a shorter link, which could be causing the problem with forwarding as well.

      If your domain registrar is Namecheap, it has a URL forwarding option you can use for this purpose.

      Mostly I use the php redirect code that Bishop posted about.

      Option 2 is to point the domain to your normal web host and use a php page to redirect.
      Code:
      <?php
      header("Location: http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%2Fqid%3D1223588923%3Fie%3DUTF8%26rs%3D%26keywords%3Delliptical%26rh%3Di%253Aaps%252Ck%253Aelliptical%252Ci%253Asporting&tag=weddingsociet-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325");
      ?>

    Hey Tiff,
    I usually just use a subdomain on one of my urls and then redirect that to the affiliate url. Haven't used it for amazon, but it works for everything else.

    Here's what I did so let me know if I missed a step. lol

    logged into my Hostgator account and on my domain, I clicked on Addon Domains. Then I clicked on Setup Redirection where it says "Redirect Domain to URL" - that takes me to a page where I paste ni the URL (the one I listed above) and click Save.

    Am I doing it wrong? I redirect all the time and it works. Maybe it'll help if I show you my domain so you can see what it's doing in the browser or whatever - it's at exerciseequipmentelliptical.com - see what happens? It gives me an amazon sorry msg but when you paste that URL into the browser (the Amazon one), it works!

    Confusing.

    Yeah, it doesn't seem to be going to the right place. In that case, I would bet that the URL is too long. Use a link cloaker to shorten your destination URL.

    Nope. lol
    Okay, I'm going to take my original link, cloak it, and use THAT as my redirect.

    I asked in the Amazon Associates forum and the lady nearly bit my head off asking WHY I'd want to send someone to my domain and have it go somewhere ELSE. lol

    I think it's working!

    What do you see when you go here: exerciseequipmentelliptical.com?

    Do you see the Amazon results page? Now how do I know if I'm getting credit for that? I cloaked it using GoTryThis and then did a redirect to that.

    Looks perfect.

    How do you know if you get credit? Really, the only way to check since you're using a 3rd party cloaker is to have some people hit the site and verify that you're showing the visitors. I think Amazon will show you the hits your pages get, but I'm not sure. It's been forever since I've been in their admin panel.

    tiff,

    Did you get the HTML from the Amazon Associates area. Can't see any reference to an affiliate ID in your link in your first post or in the source code from your redirected link. I have a site which links to some amazon products and My Aff id is shown in the Amazon Url.

    I thought this was my ID: id=1223588923?

    No? I know it's not the word I use which ends in a -20. I used the associates text link option. Ugh what a pain. I hate being a tech idiot

    When you go to your ellpitcal trainer amazon page do you see a grey toolbar at the top of the page that says hide | Link to this page | astore ect ?

    If so click the | link to this page link | and then copy the HTML code then do the redirect thing.

    If you don't have the toolbar go into your admin area and look for a link called sitestripe. You should be able to enable the toolbar and this will allow you to get the HTML code for any page on amazon without all the hassle.
