ABANDONDED HOSTING ACCOUNTS AND EXPIRED DOMAINS

How does one go about buying expired domains? I thought I found a list of expired domains but when I when I go to buy, it says backorder 18.99.

Also what happens with an expired hosting account? What happens to all the content that was contained with this hosting? Do they have auctions or anything like that to purchased abandoned hosting accounts or entire websites?

    Hello,
I use this website as a resource for expired domain names.
    Deleted Domain Names
I have not seen anything for expired hosting accounts and you would not be able to use it as it belongs to the person that made it.

yeah, I don't think there is any way that you can buy expired hosting accounts, especially not the content contained within them.

bummer. So all of that valuable information just gets thrown away? No auctions or anything? Do you think the hosting will take control of these domains at least?

Just seems crazy to me that this kind of stuff just....disappears, things that are so valuable.

GIVE ME A BREAK! It is ILLEGAL to take the content! It is COPYRIGHT infringement, possibly subject to NDA, patents, trademarks, etc.... It is possible that they could be sued by DOZENS of companies for MILLIONS of dollars!

It is also illegal to hack the domain name account, which would be required in most cases to steal the domain name.

It is ALSO illegal to backorder a domain, which is why all the companies that CLAIM to usually can't deliver. The ONE company that actually has the ABILITY to do this with COM/NET ran into a LOT of trouble with ICANN, so they ASKED permission. They usually didn't ask permission, but ICANN could shut them down, and was clearly getting fed up. ICANN told them NO! If THEY can't offer it, nobody else can, UNLESS they registered the domain for the previous owner and held it. Sometimes, HOSTS register a domain name and hold it. But they STILL can't sell the content.

Look at it this way. suppose you were a broker/market maker, and the telephone company decided to sell your conversations.... Wouldn't YOU be upset? YOU might want to sue. The other party might want to sue! Companies affected might want to sue! In the US, the PUC, FTC, FCC, and SEC, NYSE, AMEX to name a few, might want to sue. They could get THROWN IN JAIL for releasing private info and insider information.

At the appropriate time your domain name registration will be renewed and your hosting account maintained.

The fundamental fact about the Internet is that no one owns or controls it. This fact accounts for much of the Internet's openness and value, but it also places a high premium on the judgment and responsibility of those who use the Internet, both in the information they acquire and in the information they disseminate to others.

As for grabbing old content, you could see if previous versions of the site had been saved by the Wayback Machine. Copy-pasting the source would get the look of the site back up, though not the functionality (if any); doing so would put you in a legal grey area - the content would most likely be under copyright of the original owner, though if it were posted under license, you may be able to use it. I know that this is something that is practiced, but it tends to be a method utilized by unscrupulous types. Nothing that I'd recommend, but definitely possible.

It is ALSO illegal to backorder a domain,
Wow, I don't know about that. My first and last name .com was 'taken' and it was a porn site. I used Godaddy's backorder request, paid the $18.00 (or whatever it was) and within a year it had expired and I owned the domain (not the content.)
