Good Content Bad For Adsense Revenues?

We made some changes to a couple of our popular web pages recently, and basically reduced the amount of content (which we moved to other pages).

Immediately the Adsense revenues from these pages increased, as the click rate went up!!

This seems like a major conflict between providing good content and ranking well in Google SERPs and getting a decent revenue from Adsense!

As anyone else noticed this?

    Here's how that works...

    You have 3 options (essentially):

    1. Great content that really satisfies everything your visitor could want to know about that topic. Result: very low CTR. You made what is perhaps the #1 most common mistake Adsense publishers make - you gave too much away and removed all of the reasons for a visitor to feel compelled to do anything else (like click an Adsense ad!).

    2. Lousy content that amounts to largely a waste of time for your visitors. Result: high CTR (assuming you've focused it enough to get targeted Adsense ads to show). This is what a lot of inexperienced and spammy Adsense publishers do. Can't knock the results, although it leaves a bad taste and clogs up the Web with nonsense. I also think the really obvious purveyors of this method are just asking for a Google slap eventually. So this is good in the short-term and a bad idea for anyone wanting to build a long-term income from Adsense.

    3. Good content that leaves the visitor feeling like they need to click somewhere to buy. Result: high CTR. This is what more experienced Adsense publishers do - those of us who are in it for the long haul as a serious business model. You have to learn how to write content that provides visitors with solid information, while also reinforcing their desire for the product or service in question. It's pre-selling with your content. Do it right and you can get even higher CTR than with the spammy nonsense content mentioned in #2.

There are two things in play here:

    1. You do want to have unique, original content to rank high in the SERPs. High rankings equal more visitors, which equals more clicks and Adsense income.

    2. What visitors do when they come to your page. If they're totally satisfied with the info you provide, there's no reason for them to click away. But if the content is missing a few key points (even though it's unique and original from a SE standpoint), they'll be more inclined to click away via your Adsense links, which also equals more Adsense revenue.

You have to have both of these things working to get long-term, sustainable income out of Adsense.

That's exactly what I focus on every one of my contents.

Thanks for all these useful comments so far!!

I am going to look at all our pages and see if they can be modified to improve the CTR.

    Big job though!
