How To Make Download Page In Wordpress?

what is the best way to create a page in wordpress that can be used as a download page, for example to host a link to a free report that I'm offering, obviously I don't want the page to appear in the menu, I've tried to use the "private function" but I think you need to log in to see it?

You could create a static page as opposed to a post. Does it need to be a Wordpress page though? Just put up a simple html download page and link to it.

This didn't help me, since what he was asking is "how" to do it, this answer just said do it, not showing how... I know I am new so I guess I need more specifics, thanks. ; )

I use the free plugin called "PC Hide Pages" this will hide your page from the search on your blog, from the menu and will tell the robots from the search engines not to index that page

Why don't you just create a download page that is off the blog?

www.yourdomain.com would be your blog (I'm assuming) then create www.yourdomain.com/new/download.htm

go into your cpanel and create a new "folder" from your main www.

This is a new "directory" that you can place your download page into.
It will not be part of your blog and you can keep it out of the search engines.

Just create a Page as normal inside of WP. Then, depending on your theme, you can either edit the Navbar code or use a plugin or use the theme function (if available) to remove that page from the menu's links.

Also, you may want to remove that page from the sitemap (controlled inside the sitemap plugin settings).

Setting it to private doesn't allow anyone to access the page without being logged in.

You could also password protect the Page and include the password, along with a direct link to the page, in the autoresponder email that you send out.

This suggestion seems to work pretty well, I want to keep the page within the theme so that when the report is accessed the person is exposed to the blog again

      thanks for all the suggestions

You could get the exlclude pages plugin and just unclick the little checkbox it provides and it will be taken off the menu.

            Wow, that was easy enough!

I never know with Wordpress. Sometimes I try stuff and it's easy, most of the time...not so much!

Although this plugin is called "Hide Posts" - it is also very good for hiding Pages (from the public and search engines) and means you don't have to mess with the code (OK until you come to change your theme!)

There are plenty of free squeeze pages for Wordpress online. The Warrior Room gives away a pretty good one.

Yes, use the Exclude pages plugin. That's the easiest solution.

      Use a WP minisite template...

..or use the WP Exclude Pages plugin.

Create a Page, not a Post, and edit the slug to something like this: yourwebsite[dot]com/download-aeeahkagOHW23kKhaskh3 (with a long string of random characters)

Create a new page, and use a squeeze page theme, there are plenty available. The first link in my sig and the associated thank you page are both done like this.

There might be some easier way but what I did is this:

    1. Create a simple html file that will act as your download page.
    2. Create a folder in your website. (this will serve as your URL, e.g. www.sample.com/download)
    3. Upload your html file into that folder in your website using Cpanel.

I typically create a static HTML page, and upload it. There's no reason to use Wordpress at all, as you don't want any of the plugins, social buttons or anything else from wordpress on the download page.

Just don't forget to track the page by adding in your google analytics code to the page!

If you use custom menus, you have full control on what appears on your menus and the newly created page won't appear. Otherwise, you can use a plugin to exclude pages to be displayed on menus, ( exclude pages plugin i think it is called ). Or you can edit the file where the menus are displayed, and add the parameter exclude=YOURPAGEID .
