Facebook Ads Weirdness

So, I've been putting off facebook advertising for as long as possible and finally jumped in and started playing around two weeks ago. I've run good sized AdWords campaigns for years so facebook ads were easy to jump into.

Funny thing is that when I started out, the suggested cpc bid was at like $.75. So I started at $.72, got a bunch of page views and about 15 clicks within a couple of hours.

So I lowered my cpc bid to $.20. No traffic, which I expected. Raised to $.70. Nothing. Raised to $.90. Nothing. Then $1.50.

Every day I login to check my stats, the suggested cpc goes up a little more. It's up to Suggested Bid: $3.03 - 3.64 now.

Is that normal? Seems like facebook attempts to lure one in with promises of very cheap cpc and large reach where in fact they want to lure you into paying 3 times as much to get continued visits. Maybe I have it all wrong.

Try changing the demographic targeting and see what that does to the CPC... regards Allen

Funny, the thing that I changed that worked was the "mileage" around the cities I chose to target. Upped it to 50 surrounding miles and it brought it down to $.75 recommended again. Thanks for the prompting.

I've heard, and experienced, that if you don't achieve a certain CTR (hear-say is 2%), facebook bumps your minimum bid up. They want relevant ads for their users, plus the higher your CTR the more money they make. i.e. if you're taking up ad space and not generating ad revenue for them, they're going to raise the cost per click to make that back up. The higher your click through rate is, the more they'll give you a break.

Try creating a new ad and see where you land on recommended cost.

I've experienced the same thing. They're really picky about making sure you're targeting the right people. That's why it's important to narrow it down as close as you can get to your target market.

Change the targeted countries, if your offer is not country sensitive choose a few asian or middle east countries, these often respond very fast to anything you give them.
