Does anybody have an opinion of PHPList? I just installed in on Hostgator and am looking forward to using it. Hostgator policy is double opt-in.

What is better single-opt or double-opt?

Forgive me, I am a newbie with the "list thing"

Thanks,

Mark

I was thinking this is an old script that isn't developed much anymore. Is it still in use by many people?

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I have never personally used PHPList but I am on the list of one company that uses it so I know that it works.

There are some real dangers for using it (or any autoresponder script that runs from your own server) but like most everything in life, there are trade-offs. You'll be getting a "free" autoresponder solution but you'll be getting it with some inherent risks.

First, if you are on a shared server (and especially if you have a shared IP address for your hosting account) you might get your IP Blacklisted because of the actions of others.

Second, your IP will not have any special relationship with any of the big email providers so you may find that your deliverability rate suffers.

For me, my list is my most precious asset and I am not willing to take the risks I've just mentioned. Of course, that means that I will have to pay for the solution I've chosen (Aweber) but that's just part of doing business.

      RE: Double-Optin vs. Single-Optin:

You'll find plenty of marketers on both sides of this fence and I'm not going to champion one or the other.

Double-Optin provides some extra liability protection but will cause your list to grow more slowly. Some will argue that a Double-Optin list is better (conversion wise) than a Single-Optin list and while that might be true, the number of list members (for a Single-Optin list) will be bigger so the numbers may cancel each other.

I use Double-Optin and it works for me.

      Best,
      Kevin
