That is the problem!
Many people just use automated software to post non relevant backlinks!
I agree with you comment spam sucks.

Post relevant comments for related blogs or just stay away.
Having said that, it is just the way the internet works these days.
People are only looking for fast backlinks and not for relevant comments, posts and links.

That's exactly the main problem right there.

Funny thing is that an algorithm to prevent any seo benefit from those links would be one of the easiest for Google to implement.

Hi Melody,

Thanks for the kind words. So many people know me only as "Boogie Jack" that it's not uncommon for people here to be surprised when they put my real name together with the alias from my original site.

The members site is being rebuilt behind the scenes right now to add a second level. Most of the web design stuff will be in the new free level to build my mailing list (why settle for a mere 15,000 subscribers?). The paid level will be more about small business and home business. As before, the cost will be extremely reasonable compared to most member sites.

I never delete or approve, i use akismet or some other anti spam plugins. They automatically filter out spam and let LEGIT comments through. (Usually). I cant believe you approve those manually

I used to get spam alot since it is a tv show site but i have elimated it by the plugin known as watchmyback, If you dont have it installed i suggest and recomend it to anyone who has spam problems

Doesn't your blog have the option for you to just manually approve comments? I think that is much better than having to go through and deleting 3000 that have already been posted. It sucks either way, but at least you delete them prior...

As for why do people do it? I guess some people just don't care, have no respect for the hard work others put in, and do not even take themselves seriously. And then there are the much hated BOTS or software...

That is why my husband activated the "manually approve" comment option on my blog. I work too hard to have some idiot come and leave spam comments on any particular article I have posted. I do not understand why people even bother doing it. As someone else said, the Search Engines do not take kindly to it. That is why quality is so important, even in your Off-Page link building. If you have nothing valuable to add, just DON'T say anything. But I guess that is easier said than done for a lot of people!

I use Akismet like so many other WP bloggers + a plugin called Simple Trackback Validation because a lot of junk/spam are not really comments but fake trackbacks.

Occasionally, something gets through but then I get the email notification about a new "comment", so I go there and kill them

I manually approve every comment on my blogs.

Akismet is pretty good at picking up spam but I have found that every now and then a good comment gets thrown into the spam bucket. Unfortunately we get hundreds of spam comments a day so we don't bother screening through to find the good ones anymore.

So now the spam just all gets flushed.

Just checked my wordpress blogs and I have received more than 1500 spam comments in less than a week. I think I'm just gonna have to disallow commenting even though once in a while somebody posts a genuine comment. That's really annoying, but I can't really complain as I've done my fair share of blog commenting as well in the past

i found that my spam levels is also high but when i went into the settings and changed it so that people couldn't leave comments on blogs that are more than 28 days old that reduced it by a lot.

What actually annoyed me was that wordpress was reading spam as proper comments so i was getting a lot of automated emails that was driving me nuts!!!

In these circumstances, it is better to just moderate the comments yourself. Though it will be hard in a highly popular blog, it is still better. Because even with Akismet, some general comments still manage to go through.

Spam is a consequence of improper use of technology.

With good softwares, spamming is easier and you can only defeat it manually. It is computer generated after all.
