What type of programmer do I need to do this?

Hi

I am new at this whole internet thing. I have an idea that would help me a lot, but do not know what type of programmer (what skills, programming language, etc) I need to accomplish this. Here is what I need:

I need a website that has a page where a range of products can be displayed individually and in certain defined categories = with 'n picture, short description and price of each product. My secretary (no knowledge of programming, FTP, etc at all) must also be able to independently manage the content on these pages from a screen/control panel on her desktop computer - especially the following:

1. Add new categories and products
2. Change text for each product
3. Change pictures for each product
4. Add/delete products in categories (text + pictures)
5. Easily change prices on range of products at end of year
6. Download opt-in list (prospective clients)

ANY existing scripts/suggestions/referrals/help?

      So here's my next question:

Do you get a Wordpress plugin/template that gives my secretary a simple screen on her desktop asking her: What do you want to do (choose 1):
      1. Create new category
      2. Change picture
      3. Change text
      4. Create new product
      5. Download subscribers list
and then automatically logs in to the Wordpress site, give her a choice of which info to get/change... show the existing info.... give possibility to replace it.... and automatically upload the new info to the site?

Or do you have to get a programmer to do that?

I just got to know about a site called rapbank.com which runs in WP. I think it exactly replicates your requirements?

    Thank you.

What you need is a Magento theme. Magento is a LOT like Wordpress in simplicity and ease of use, but it's specifically made for ecommerce. This is a commercial site but it will explain it all for you, Magento - Home - eCommerce Software for Growth [NOT an affiliate link, I have no association with the company; I found it by doing research just like you're doing]. Magento themes are free, though, just like Wordpress, there are some that are premium.

You can find someone competent to set it up for you and then turn the keys over to your secretary through scriptlance.com, odesk.com, getafreelancer.com.

      Hi guys

This is really an amazing experience! You have given me al lot of options to explore. And that from all over the world. If you take into account that I am living in South Africa you will be able to grasp a little bit of how amazing this experience is for me.

      Thanx... and thanx again.

And if there are more responses... let it come! I am really enjoying this ride!

In my opinion, Wordpress is definitely the way to go here. For SEO purposes alone I think wordpress should always be your first option if applicable. Yes, you may need a few custom scripts, but these are very implemented onto a wordpress.

I think Magento is an extremely good Open Source Solution, however, since you are new to the eCommerce world it may be a bit too difficult for you and your Secretary to use. There is a lot of customization that goes along with Magento. Since you are already doing the research I would suggest you check out the link in my signature(ScamDetective [dot] com. It has reviews (along with customer reviews) of around 20 of the web's most popular ecommerce platforms, and will give you a much better idea on what you should be looking for, and what it is all you need for your eCommerce Website.

      Best Wishes,

      Wendy
