How To Explain To People What You Do (answer inside)...

I've had this issue for a while and I finally found a workable solution to the inevitable "what do you do?"

Of course it all depends on who you're talking to and how much detail you want to get into, but here's a basic guide to an honest and accurate response that won't leave people scratching their heads.

If you do affiliate marketing, Adsense or any kind of CPA stuff...and they ask:

"What do you do?"

One word answer: "Marketing".

(Think about it. That's what you're doing. You are "marketing" other people's businesses. Creating content for them and getting traffic to their offer for them and they pay you a commission. Sure you've probably never spoken with them about it, but who cares? It's an unspoken agreement)

If they want more? Say...

"Internet Marketing."

That's usually enough for people right there, I've found.

They might not get it, but they think they do so that's enough.

If they want even more...say "I help businesses market their products and services on the internet".

This is an accurate response that people seem to understand quite readily and might even lead to some "Offline Gold" opportunities as they might start telling you about their business and you can suggest some tips for getting new leads online...then maybe you can sign a deal for a couple thous. to set up an autoresponder, do some article marketing for them, some PPC or whatever.

Whatever you do, just don't mention the word "ebook"! They don't get it.

If you make your own products, you could go another direction, but no doubt you do affiliate marketing as well on your backend so I'd still just go with this response. It sounds cool, interesting and easy for the folks to understand. It's marketing...just on the internet.

I like to tell them I have a little "web marketing company". We do websites, web consulting as well as web video, e-mail campaigns, etc.

That way, if they are in the offline world, they may ask if I could help them with something they want done for their company.... BOOM, potential income. I got a nice "fill in" website development project from a friend of a offline business contact that way.

If they are at all up to speed on IM, they will initiate further questions.

"I make websites" by saying this they understand immediately thinking I'm a web designer and don't ask further questions about "internet marketing" and how they can get it into because it's "something they've always wanted to do" but what they mean is they hate their job and think IM is an easy way to get out of it but they don't wanna do the work and put in the time to make it a success. So "I make websites" avoids alot of trouble!

The fact is there is nothing stopping them from getting started in IM but I feel like they are just waiting for me to hand feed them which is the wrong way to go about anything, they use me as an excuse in their mind as to not getting started and sticking with it.

They see my lifestyle and they want it but don't wanna do the work, it's amazing, I guess if they could understand that it takes work then they would have my lifestyle

Well that works if you actually are a web designer. One day somebody might just put you on the spot and ask to see your portfolio.
