Online Marketing to Latinos

I was researching keywords today and noticed that it is a lot easier to find highly searched keywords in spanish that have less competition than the same keywords in english. I was very tempted to register some domain names with these keywords and get the sites highly ranked fairly easily.

But....

Having years of experience with the latino culture (my wife is Peruvian) and after discussing my doubts with her (and her agreeing with me) I have decided not to pursue the idea.

My observations with selling to latinos online are:

1. Most are tighter with their money than in most other non-latino countries. There are a few exceptions though.

2. A lot of latinos are more suspicious and distrusting about using their credit card to pay for things online.

3. eBooks and info products are not something that most of them would be interested in buying. I have spoken to my wife and other latinos that have said they would rather pay $40 for an exterminator to rid the house of cockroaches than pay $20 for an eBook on "Secrets To Kill Cockroaches Without Using Pesticides" simply because they do not want to be bothered with reading the ebook or would think it was a bunch of B.S.

4. Most would much rather buy a product, like a wrinkle cream, than an eBook on how to get younger looking skin. And they would rather visit a store and buy that product than buy it online and wait for delivery.

If anyone has a different experience with selling to latinos I would like to hear it. These are just my thoughts and observations (most of which are confirmed by latino friends) and there might be some niches where more sales could be made than others.

And I hope this does not offend anyone, because that is not my intention here. My wife is a latina and would put me out on the porch to sleep !

I am just making observations on what latino buying habits are and wondering if anybody has had a different experience or success with selling to latinos online.

Interesting points. May be just a tad off-topic but interesting facts nonetheless.

hi greennow, you make a compelling argument but I would disagree with you. You see the thing is sometimes you can never tell until you really dip your feet in the water and test out that niche. Some people have made a killing in niches where they thought they would not find any success whatsoever so you really gotta test out the waters in that niche and see. Be sure to let me know if you get good results

You make some interesting points but you can't lump all "latinos" together.

Internet usage and online purchasing habits vary by country and socioeconomic status. There is also a burgeoning Hispanic population in the U.S. which is increasingly becoming internet savvy.

What people say and what people do are often two VERY different things. You can't ask people what they'd do and assume you have the answer. It would be cool if it worked that way, but it don't. =

    Hi greenow!
Your ideas makes a lot of sense however lets not generalize it as a lot of places in the US that are rising and becoming successful with internet marketing

I am not sure about this, but arent we also talking about Spain? I know I have both seen ES and south-american contries in my clickbank stats And to say that latinos do not buy things is similar to saying that no women drink beer. It is only a generalization.

Also, if they are browsers, you will have some adsense revenue. I would rather test this than guess it away.

I can tell you this much, from the marketing consulting perspective of working with bricks and mortar, offline businesses, the hispanic/latino business market in the US is traditionally very underserved with resources. I have a partner that I am working with now, who is licensing my marketing consulting systems to translate into espanol, and then take it all to market in the hispanic business community throuth the hispanic chambers of commerce.

Yes, that's a far cry from an ebook about wrinkles.

I agree 100% with this post.
I´m latino from Uruguay but now I live in Peru.
According to my internet experience using Ebay market place, the issue that is mentioned here are real fact to me. I hope some day it will change.

Here's something to consider. About half of my sales staff is bilingual, and 21% of the sales come directly as a result of engaging business owners and purchasing agents in Spanish even though many of these prospects also do speak English. The demand for our products is extremely underserved for the Latino market and we have very liitle competition. By ignoring this demographic or not adapting to their needs, you are leaving a lot money on the table.

Well, there are more and more clickbank products being translated in Spanish these days, so there must be a market...

If you take Italy for example the same issue applies. Younger generations and a minority of mature users are perhaps likely to buy some digital products, but all in all I think that it will take years for them to get to like a digital book, on top of giving bank details online.
For example myself I don't like to read extended texts online and I do appreciate the feel of a paper book in my hands.

After a conversation with your wife and some friends, you have decided that most Latinos would not buy your product. Imagine if Bill Gates said the hell with it when his professors told him nobody would buy a computer for their house.
