14,000 monthly searches - 24,000 competitors

What kind of ratio between the number of competitors versus number of monthly searches gets you excited?

I went to the google keyword tool and found a key phrase that had 14,000 searches per month. Then I went to google and typed in that key phrase in quotes and it returned 24,000.

This is a ratio of 1.8 to 1. Is this a good ratio? Or should I keep looking?

What ratio between competitor to total monthly searches make you feel like you're about to hit the jackpot? And what ratio would make you say "this key phrase sucks"? And what ratio is borderline?

thats a really good ratio, nice work. without using tools designed to filter out high comp/ low search volume, it is pretty rare to find a keyword that rich, for me at least.

Any suggestions on tools that filter out high comp/low search volume?

I'm still a newbie. Please recommend some tools to get the job done more efficiently. Just shooting from the hip for now.

Id fully research the word first! Check it with Adwords tool, then wordtracker, after that G Trends then last but not least G insights!, Good luck with your new niche!
MS does all this on the fly...

In MS (Market Samurai) you can do that, just set which filters you want when you analyze your keywords.

    Great tool

First thing I'm wondering is if the keyword phrase that has 14,000 searches per month based on "broad match" or "phrase match"? I always like to look at "phrase match" to get the real picture.

Next do a search in Google Without Quotes for that Keyword Phrase and look at what your competition is on the first page of Google. SEO for FireFox is a great add-on that will give you good insight into the sites you will be competing against.

You may find that despite the 24,000 competing sites, they all have high page rank, many backlinks and have been around for many years. Or, you may have just found a keyword phrase that you can easily get ranked on the first page. I echo the above that Market Samurai will give you all this information on the fly.

      Hope this info helps.
