Automatic Backup solution/software For an External Hardrive ??

Hiya, i have a large external hardrive, and want to use it for backups (a duplicate copy) of all my data and files.

- the main Hardrive is the primary for storage,
but i wish to use the external one for a secondary backup..

But i dont want to keep changing file names, or Replacing Old files with their 'newer' version, or is that the best way to do it?

i also dont want to delete Large chunks of Old files from the external HD and replace it with the NEWER upadted chunks of new files (Exact same files, just updated versions)

- For example i might have a word file in Jan2010, save it on the primary HD + External HD,

then it gets updated, and added to in May 2010, so is there a way for the External hardrive version of the file to get SAVED automatically, using the software or somthing? (Without copying and pasted/replacing the old file)?

so is there an automatic way of doing this, using software?

"so it replaces old files with New ones, without you having to fiddle and do anything time consuming"?

How do you guys do it?

what do you do?

I don't know of any software you can add to do this, but Western Digital has pretty sophisticated hard drives that sync with your computer. As soon as you save anything it gets saved on the back up drive too. Also encrypted.

The drive stays connected, usb. You can also use it to keep 2 computers synced.

It's called "incremental backup". Backup software first starts out by backing up everything on our HD. Then, it only backs up what's changed since the last backup ran. This speeds backup times significantly.

I recommend keeping the last saved version since you'll fill up space quickly by keeping every single version ever made. Plus...I don't know any software that does this.

The most reliable solution is this one:

Backup and restore system software and PC system utilities for Windows and Linux OSs

I stopped using external backups years ago because every single hard drive will eventually fail. They usually get around 2-5 years of life. Laptops die even faster. I'd rather keep everything on the cloud with reliable backup providers. Carbonite.com is another good one.

Well worth the minor investment in your data's security.

If anyone using a Mac wants to do this, and has at least OS X 10.5 installed, you can use Apple's built in Time Machine software. It's basically "set and forget".

The software backs up your system every hour automatically. After the initial backup, if a file has been created or modified, it will be backed up. The cool thing is that if you want to retrieve an earlier version of a document - you can. Just launch Time Machine and navigate "back in time" to the exact version of the file you need and simply restore it to your system.

I wrote a blog post on back up strategies for people running a Mac. Can't link to it here (not enough posts), but click on my blog link below and look for a post titled "Smart Backup Strategies".

How about using RoboCopy (from Microsoft) for free?

Robocopy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I use it to backup my file server to my ReadyNAS.

You can use a "mirror" option that will delete files on the backup drive if they have been deleted on the source drive.

    LOTS of options.

Works great, you can schedule with Windows task scheduler.

I will have to look into that, does it slow down the computer, backuping onto 2 drives?

I schedule those tasks for night time, usually.

It will only copy changed files, so it ordinarily does not take long.

I use ADrive as my backup system as it can backup up to 50GB of storage. It's easy to handle and I've recommended it as well for my students inside my course.

I guess you can use Handy Backup to make "incremental backups with timestamps", as they call it. You can set your backup to run every night and forget about it.
