What about craigslist. Ive gotten some leads from them in the past, but sitepoint is cool also.

oDesk also has hundreds of writing jobs available including ghosting

you can try odesk or guru, jobs are offered from web design to writing articles, ghostwriting perhaps

I would try elance.com or even rentacoder.com. Another place to check is Craigslist under various Help Wanted ads. You can also advertise your services there free.

The sources people have given you should give you some great places to start. I don't do writing for others, but if I were going to get into that, I might take this approach.

You say you would like to write ebooks. How about if you go to a niche you feel comfortable in and start trolling Google for keywords in that niche. Visit a hundred or so sales pages. Look at the sites that come up. Many of the pages will have opt-in forms and offer a free bonus to encourage people to sign up. Some pages will either not have an opt-in form, will have one without a bonus, or will be offering a bonus you feel is of low quality.

I would look for product vendors with what appear to be either weak bonus reports or don't have one at all and sign up for their lists. (This will get you their email addresses and likely their physical addresses at the bottom of their emails if they use many of the bigget auto-responders). Put together a 20 page mini-ebook and contact these people offering a free download to your ebook and explain that you will personalize it with their name and contact info inside under the following conditions.

Be honest with them. Explain that you are trying to start a ghostwriting business and you simply ask for a comment from them regarding your ebook and a screen shot of the ebook you wrote on their opt-in form. If they agree to this, give them the EXCLUSIVE rights to the report and use their comment and a screen shot of where it is being used on their opt-in form to promote your service from your blog or site.

I use the word "exclusive" but I would stipulate that you retain the right to provide either sample pages of the work, or the work in it's entirety to potential clients so they can see the quality of your work.

If someone were to contact me simply saying they are a ghostwriter and they want to write some ebooks or reports for me--that wouldn't get much traction.

However, if they can show me actual sites and opt-in pages where other vendors are using materials they have created--and if they provide me with a sample of their work--that might get my attention. The testimonials from those vendors would also help.

Another take off would be to watch JV and product launch forums and look for someone with a product launch at least 30 days off. Write a 20-30 page, excellent quality mini-ebook related to the topic of their product and pay $20 for a ebook cover graphic. Offer to let the product vendor exclusive rights to it as I described above.

Same deal--ask for a testimonial and to take a screen shot of how they use it. If you can get a high profile taker with a good sized launch you should be able to leverage this for dozens of orders from others launching products in that niche. There would be no limit to the good paying work you could get form this technique.

I know this involves some unpaid work on your end Adriaan, but sometimes starting a business requires laying some groundwork before getting to the profit end of things.

One you got it rolling, you should be able to leverage the satisfaction of previous clients to grow even more.

Great advice Mike. I think this is a great way to build credibility before approaching the market. Getting people to see you as an 'expert' instead of a 'wannabe expert' is a good way to minimize negative responses.

Some good advice so far. How about using the Warrior Products & Services part of this forum?

Also, where are samples of your writing? Do you have samples on your own website? People are not likely to hire you unless you show them what you can do.

Put a couple chapters of ebooks you have written. (With permission of course from the person for whom you wrote the ebooks.)

Where are some of your own ebooks to prove how good you are at writing? Maybe it's time to go write a few ebooks on your own so you have samples to show.
