Are you trying to impress marketers...or your customers?

I just read a great post over on Copyblogger about writing to your audience. I think this is a hugely important topic for marketers, especially those of us that hang out on forums with other marketers.

Read the post here: Why You Shouldn’t Write for Other Writers | Copyblogger

A lot of times I get caught up thinking that I have to create products that are 100% unique and will impress the marketers that are around me. While this isn't a bad thing to do, it can't be the focus of my marketing.

I know that I need to write to the people who need/want what I have to offer, not those that already know it.

And since this is so important, it's a great reminder to me that I need to rewrite the description of my target customer. Then when that's done I'm going to post it somewhere I can see, and whenever I write anything, it will be to and for him.

the internet exist mostly because people are looking for information/ an answer to a problem. the articles that adress these problems are the ones that generate the best results.

This is an eternal lessons that is often missed especially on
a marketing forum like this one. Marketers often give their
PERSONA: impression when they should withhold them
because they are not in the target market.

"I don't like videos in sales letter" BUT do they work?

"I don't like big red headlines" But do they work.

"I don't auto-start audios" But do they work?

"I don't like long sales letters" But, do they work?

"I don't like video sales letters with no control buttons" But do they work?

Your target audience should have the final say, not even you.

It's an easy lesson to forget.

You're right Ray, it seems like there's always a few posts
on the front page of this forum asking something that
shouldn't be answered by other marketers.

Even worse is that many marketers (I've done it before)
answer those questions with their opinions and then
some readers take that as truth rather than speculation.

I think forums are a GREAT place to brainstorm and get
new ideas, but there are some questions that should
be left to the target market to answer (either through
      surveys or testing)

I have a much different style than most. I am blunt and make no reservations about pointing out how ignorant my readers can be. I actually enjoy it. Apparently, people like it too, because they keep buying my stuff and reading my newsletters It also helps that I write things that actually help people.

So, to answer your question... I write to amuse myself, which in turn amuses my readers.

I think it's what we call of ego. Often times we want to impress other marketers and end up forgetting the guys who actually pay our bills.

I can say that I made this mistake once or twice in the past, but I think that now I'm focused (and experienced) enough to put my customers in the first place.

If the marketers are paying me, then I'll impress them.

But if they are paying me, they become my customers.

Thus, I'd rather impress my customers.
