Am I right in this traffic generation idea? Two methods inside

Let's say you've got 5 products released. Here are two methods and I want you to choose one.

1) You give away 1 for free, and hope people will buy the other 4.

2) You give 4 away for free, and hope people will buy the missing one.

What I'm trying to figure out is basically, is it better to have lots of products with little traffic, or to have LOTS of traffic with only a few products. I'm going to choose #2 here, but I may be mistaken. I'd like to hear what you have to say.

I'm posting this because I think I may transform my business model a bit as far as promotion. If I did have 5 products released, I could release 4 publicly and that could only drive KILLER amounts of traffic to my website. I'm thinking that even if there's not as much private, paid material for paying members because you released most of what you made for free, that would be a better method.

Am I right here?

Do you mean to say that if you've got an incredible free product, the value of it will make people not want to buy the paid product? Because they're already satisfied?

What I meant is that if you've got some products done, you can use that material on your website as a way to drive traffic to it. So you both give away free stuff that gives them a glimpse of what's on the inside AND drive traffic to your website by doing it, and you've got a paid option as well.

I see what you mean. What would you say though to someone having great products that are all equal in quality? My guess is that they'll think 'if this free product is as good as it is, then the paid ones must be equally as good if not better'. Though, what's most important is if that is going to get you conversions, not people just agreeing that it's equally as good. I'm not sure on that one.
