I'm a nerd at heart. This was one of my guilty pleasures growing up... and found an old box of Magic cards when moving.

My questions are - is this an untapped niche? Do products exist to promote? Has anyone tried it? (I thought I watched a video regarding it and an affiliate project, possibly byThe Rich Jerk?? ... not entirely sure)

Kelly Felix's (the Rich Jerk) business partner Mike Long was into this stuff big time I believe and had an online business related to it.

It's not really my sort of thing but yes, there's obviously business potential in it.

Used to promote Rich Jerk's stuff. Quite well converting.

Magic The Gathering isn't as big as it was when it first came out, but there
is still some potential there (former MTG player)

          Me too

Just checked the Adwords keyword tool though..."magic the gathering" still gets over half a million (exact) monthly searches.

However, I don't know what you would sell in this niche though and I don't know if there'd be room for yet another fan-site or anything like that.

How did he monetize it, what did he sell?

Me three! And yes, no doubt there are hangers on. Heck, I'd play again if I had more time!

I came within 1/1000th of a point of going to the first pro tour ever in Paris. I credit Dave Humphries with purposely stalling before there were rules to prevent that.

Anyways, it's a niche I wouldn't bother with unless you're brilliant. Whoever owns it now probably has the marketing machine locked tight, and players, like poker players, are really tight-knit and good with their knowledge. In other words, you're going to have to have something REALLY special in order to generate enough buzz. Anything sub-standard, or just a throw-together "info" product and the word-of-mouth community will shred you to pieces something fierce.

    Good luck, though,
    Eric
ps. By poker players, I refer to the dedicated online crowd.

I was personally a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, I have actually been toying around with setting up an online card shop. I personally think this could be a really good business to get into it. To the OP, if you would like to set up an online card store with me we can start by using your MTG cards and my YGO cards. Eventually we could move on into bigger card sections and become bigger than ideal808.

Gaming is a very very well paying niche if you find the right game to promote. A huge percentage of people own a computer for the soul reason to play online games. I did it back in the 90's and it was gaming that lead me to learn everything else about the internet and computers.

Quick idea -- how about a site that facilitates card swaps? I, too, used to be into M:tG and did a lot of card swaps in person, but back then I never really looked for sites where I could do it online. Don't know if there are some around now, but you may be able to capture part of the market this way. You can advertise at small gaming stores and on M:tG discussion boards and such.

MTG has been moving to an online platform for the last couple of years. There are countless sites that offer information for newbies. This would be your best bet. Maybe sell an ebook that can help noobs get started in the world of MTG: Online...
