Internet Marketing BIG Picture?

6 replies
Hi,

I'm a rookie here, but I guess this is the right place to discuss about my topic. I'm pretty experienced in Internet marketing, but I would like to figure out the "big picture" of Internet marketing. I am doing an empirical research on this topic and I would like to cover all the areas of Internet marketing. Simply said, I am trying to understand all the areas of Internet marketing in order to develop my survey for the research.

Please check the picture attached. I have listed a number of areas of Internet marketing in the mindmap. I could figure out some more, but I prefer hearing opinions from professionals first.

Now, my question is what would you add/remove/change in this picture in order to cover all the areas of Internet marketing?

This is based on my thinking of having different "technologies", "activities" and "business models" in Internet marketing. If you see it differently, please let me know about your approach.

I really appreciate all feedback and thank you for helping me out!

Best regards,
Marko Pyhajarvi

    The 'big picture' is relative.

    You can have your IM picture as big or small as you need it to run your business.

    For some people IM is PPC, for some it's SEO.

    There's no one big picture that applies to everyone and you can break many elements down to low level detail, so you'll get different answers from different people.

    If you look at who you're trying to help and what they need, that should give you more focus than just asking what random people think.

      Yeah, your right. It's relative, and I won't cover it all in my study, but I would like to brainstorm with people in order to see a broader picture. I would like to understand what are all technologies and activities related to IM, and then narrow down for my study.

      So, I really appreciate any help of adding/removing pieces from my picture. Unfortunately I can't share a bigger picture or link to my Flickr profile before I havef posted 15 replies.

    The thing about it is - IM is something you use on a business. It's not a business in itself - unless you're a marketing company.

    Do you want every video sharing site? video creation tools? graphic creation tools? image sharing sites? powerpoint and document sharing sites? blogging platforms? audio sharing tools, ideas and sites? audio editing tools? press release sites, tools and services? every bookmarking service? every software sharing site? every article directory? submission tools?

    etc.. etc.. etc....

    there are thousands of things that 'could' be referred to.

    Most are irrelevant for most people. With no context it's just confusing for people to tell them lots of options.

      Andy, I do understand what you mean, and I agree with you, but I guess I need to point out that I am not helping a customer with this study. Instead I would like to understand what are all the technologies and activities related to IM in different businesses. Naturally it is impossible to understand that WHOLE big picture, but by discussing and brainstorming I would like to broaden my understanding. I also understand that IM is not a business itself, but a vehicle to do business.

      Anyhow, you already mentioned few technologies and activities that I am looking for. From your list I can pick up

      ACTIVITIES
      - social communities
      * video sharing
      * image sharing
      * audio sharing
      * document and file sharing
      * press release sharing
      * article directories
      - social bookmarking
      - blogging

      TOOLS
      - graphic, audio and video creation & editing tools
      - blogging platforms
      - submission tools

      Now, I understand that a context is needed, and this is exactly what I would like to create. I don't want to limit inside certain business or industry. If there are thousands of "componments" in IM, I believe they all belong to certain categories, and those categories I would like to understand.

      If I ask you "how would you define IM" and you reply "it depends on context", I naturally would't be satisfied with your answer. I want to try to understand the bigger picture, even though it would be too big for me to understand.

      From your list I picked up six categories and six options under one category, so now I would like to broaden to cover more categories. Unfortunately I can't share my mindmap as I mentioned in my previous post. Those above are already covered in the mindmap, but I'd like to discover more.
