Call me stupid, but does this count as an "open" in email software?

You know when you have a preview/reading pane in your email client, right?

So when you select an email, you can see its' contents...right?

Well, technically, you're not "opening" it, you are previewing it, yes?

So, at what point is it considered an "open" with autoresponder services like Aweber? Do they count previewing as opens?

I mean, I guess it kind of is an open, because you can see the email contents.

Dumb question, but would be useful to know the answer...

It's a good question, but you'll have to ask Aweber I think because as far as my email client is concerned reading in the preview pane (which I always do) does count as an 'open', but that may not necessarily apply to Aweber.

If you view images in the preview pane, it's an open.

Opens are typically tracked by a 1 pixel image being loaded.

Brian is correct. However, if they have images turned off (view text version only), I do not believe it counts as an open. In that case, they would have to actually click a link for it to count.

    Hi,

Yes if the preview shows an image and the 1x1 tracking pixel is viewed then this would be an open. These days though with the number of emails that open without images being displayed you should not count the "open rate" as being accurate.

The only way you can track the effectiveness of an email campaign is via link clicks. So use link tracking rather than open rates.

    Cheers
